Actually, I was just noticing yesterday that we are indeed beginning to build them like this again. We have lost the craftmanship, but the greatest part of this boom is that we are starting to build 3 flats and 6 flats and other lowrise infill again, often with a modern bent. I was just walking down Clark from Foster last night and the street is lined with this kind of infill, often with nice, modern designs. I was also out by Irving Park and Cicero, and even out there I noticed there were new low rise infill buildings. This is the first time in about 50 years that we have seen signifigant expansion in decent, dense lowrise infill. There are virtually no buildings like this from the 50's until 2000 and very few from 1930-2000.

I was thinking that was Wicker Park across the river, but I can't remember.

I can't get over Chicago's "Western Empire" look. Parts of it are more pre-fire San Francisco (or something) than New York. It's Chicago.

^ Yes, High Fidelity is set in Wicker Park, which is about a mile due West & across the river from this neighborhood.

I've also noticed some similarities between Western Empire & Chicago - the similarities may be because Chicago & the West Coast both experienced explosive growth in the mid & latter parts of the 19th Century? But you notice it especially in the intact 19th-Century Chicago neighborhoods like this one.
