my favorite part of the article...

"Earlier this week, Sandy Mayor Tom Dolan said the city was "getting good responses" to its request for bids. Today, he did not return calls seeking comment about the lack of offers."

They were getting good responses to bids, but somehow no one put in one single bid. I smell a fat rat lier, and his name is Tom Dolan. They did this same damn thing with the RSL Fiaso Stadium. Oh, it will be a good investment, and it wont cost taxpayers anything, then they rape our money anyways.

Go to hell Tom Dolan, and take your stupid lies with you.

I cant wait until a new mayor gets in Sandy, and uncovers that the city doesnt have funds to do shit, because former Mayor Dolan spent every last penny the city had. Then let the hunt for the fat a$$ begin, and may his death be a slow painful one.

Yes!!! this is a perfect capstone to a perfect day! thank you very much for posting this

I think it's pretty obvious that the Mayor's brother is going to win out big-time in the networking department, when it comes to dealing with the international theatre production bigwigs.

Yeah--I wonder if Dolan really did have some negotiating going on, but it fell through after the theater companies saw that SLC was serious this time?

I hope SLC is serious this time. They need to get on that.

Today is probably the best day that SLC has had in a long time.

First, news that Tower 1 in SLC will have it's mat pour this weekend and then Sandy not receiving any bids for the theater there.

SLC will get its theater and it will be great. Nationally, there might have been interest in the theater for Sandy until they found out that it wasn't right next door to SLC. There also wasn't any amenities and a sea of parking probably didn't go over well either.

All I can say is today is a great day for SLC

Is the building they are starting construction this weekend the biggest of the residentials in CC?

The article in D News today says its 32 stories.

Yes it is. It's actually the tallest of any of the buildings being built on those two blocks.

good to hear; it wouldn't be healthy for my loathing of Sandy to grow any more intense, so this is good for my personal well being too!

Oh and Urbanboy, I had a similar idea for "Japan Town". Something I would like to see on the block would be a Botanical Garden. It could be both a botanical garden with large asian species, as well as a nursery with plants for sale. That way it would be free admission so people could just enjoy the greenery in the heart of downtown, or make a purchase which would support the livelihood of the place.

While it's good news for SLC that Sandy couldn't get a bid for the Theater, however I don't think Sandy is going to give up that easily. I'm not going to open the champagne as of yet because Sandy is still in this race and for them this isn't over.

Found this on KSL this morning...

Sandy's request for theater operator bids met with silence
March 14th, 2008 @ 10:24am

SANDY, Utah (AP) -- Sandy's promising start toward bringing a Broadway-style theater to town may have hit a hitch.

The city has been locked in a battle with Salt Lake City over where to build the prospective theater. Sandy was off to an early start -- it had a site, a developer and interest from a high-profile operator.

But Thursday's deadline for bids to run the theater came and went without a nibble.

New York-based Nederlander Producing Company of America has said a Sandy theater looks like a good opportunity, but it did not submit a bid by deadline. Local presenter NewSpace Entertainment says it will not bid until a county cultural-facilities master plan is released this summer.

City officials say the door is still open for proposals.

I think if anything this is going to make Sandy move even faster to get a proposal out there.

Projects, you're right, I'm sure Dolan will continue to press. However, the thing is that Becker's brother, William Becker, has all of the critical connections with the most elite and influential people at the production and booking end of these touring groups. When William Becker calls, the right people will listen. London, New York, etc. has 'NO IDEA' who Dolan is. On the other hand Becker is one of the most highly respected people in the theatre industry. If anything, Sandy has helped to jolt Salt Lake's power brokers out of complacency and line up behind the Mayors and his brother's iniative. That coupled with William Becker's influence makes for a slam-dunk. In the entertainment industry, whether theatrical or film, nothing is more important than first, 'who you know, i.e. William Becker'

Like the Mayor said, Sandy can go ahead and do whatever they want, Salt Lake City will build it's theatre irrespective of Sandy.

True - Sandy isn't going to back off of this any time soon. Unfortunately, Sandy is too far along in this process to forego further efforts and I don't see Dolan & Co. forfeiting anything to Salt Lake City before the summer is out.

This is very encouraging news for SLC, however. What I believe this demonstrates is that most people recognize, including Nederlander and other reputable theater operators, that SLC is the ideal location for a major cultural venue, such as this theater. Sandy may be "a good opportunity" but Nederlander is smart enough to see that SLC is a "great" opportunity - if they're willing to wait.

Even if Sandy continues to leave the door open for potential bidders, they're not likely to see any proposals unless SLC (for whatever reason) completely drops the ball - which Mayor Becker won't allow.

This theater is SLC's to lose.

I'm looking at this race as a good thing. While most people on here hates Sandy just for the thought of them getting a "Broadway theater" I like how Sandy is dreaming big, but maybe they are going at it just a little too fast. Sandy doesn't want to stay as just another Surb in the valley. The city wants to move up to the next level and I welcome it. Why? because I want to see Sandy become more then just a another city with subdivisions and Wal-Marts. However Salt Lake City downtown should be the place for the "Broadway Theater" But that doesn't mean Sandy should stop developing. I think in the end Salt Lake will get the "Broadway Theater" and Sandy will get something smaller. I think Sandy should just go ahead a build a smaller theater. ( Not for Broadway ). That way it would be a step forward for both cities.
A win win for me would be to see Salt Lake City get it's Broadway Theater. And for Sandy to still develop their big Mix-use project with new highrise Housing and Office space. And have a smaller Theater with that project.

Projects, I like how you think compromise.

Personally, I would like to see downtown with the theater and the high rise residential and commercial towers.

I would rather see Sandy have a couple of towers in the 10 to 15 story range around a Trax stop with underground parking. The towers can be both residential and commercial or a straight mixed use set of towers.

While it would be nice for Sandy to get a new theater of a smaller size, they have an excellent theater already that is in another RDA area. I think they should be thinking of fixing up what they have rather then tear things down and build new elsewhere.

I am not a fan of Sandy trying to dream big and act big. I think they should be able to dream big by working on their zoning and transit options first. Acting big would be to have the zoning and transit options in place first as it would be a better mesh for the city and the area.

As it sits, if they were to put down 2 mixed use towers in that area, traffic would be a nightmare all around the area and along State.

For Sandy to start thinking big, they need to look at the roads in the area. State is only so big and can only get so big before more problems arise. The other streets in the area are to small to handle any significant load.

The area is to far away from the Trax stop. To get it closer would mean a spur that would either go through a high school or through a cemetery, neither of which would go over well with the residents of Sandy.

The proposed Front Runner stop will be on the west side of I-15. This will help the area to add some local density. The majority of this density will be housing for people traveling to Salt Lake though.

I do agree that all areas need to start somewhere. But if they start off big without having the options there first, they won't succeed in anything other then causing problems.

I say that before Sandy starts acting big, they require a lot more in place first. Start with actually developing a city center that does not consist of oceans of surface parking. Place buildings next to sidewalks and fronting the street.

If Sandy could put more requirements in place like Salt Lake has for their various districts, I do think in 10 to 15 years, they will start to develop the way that all of us would be happy with. However, if they don't, they will never appear to be anything other then a 2nd rate city trying to act grown up.

DC/Domus is beginning construction and accepting reservations for a new condo project near downtown SLC. The location for the build is :

225 Orchard Pl
Salt Lake City, UT 84101

We will be building 14 MODERN units at at around 1500 Square Feet with underground parking for each unit. All units have Exterior decks, mountain views, locked inside storage, workout-spa access, and a roof top garden.

This will be a MODERN PROJECT.
Every effort will be made to reduce energy use and keep the building GREEN and affordable. We are seeking approval for an 8 story building possibly higher.

If you are interested please reply with any questions.
We will have documents and Plans to email out by the end of the month.

No rendering, but 8 or more floors of condos, rooftop gardens, Green building, underground parking. very cool! My question is where is this 225 Orchard Pl ? I've lived DT for 2 years now and have never even heard of that street.
I contacted the guy. for more information, he responded...
dave milin ([email protected])

Thank you for the interest in DC/Domus.

We are putting the finishes on a project at the mouth of the Cottonwoods which will serve as our model for the downtown condo project. We will be ready to walk people through at the end of the month. We'll be sure to contact you and set up a tour around April 1.

Regards,

Dave

Anyone know what project they are doing by the cottonwoods?
