I agree with you JDB. I can't believe they allowed those 2 buildings and garages to be built. I think those buildings are called The Park on Barton Creek. They are both still vacant.

So basically all they did today was add one more section to the 2nd crane, I suppose in preparation for installing the crane tomorrow.

Great pictures as always Priller. Is the 2nd crane on the opposite side of the structure (diagonal to the current), or is it closer to the 2nd/Congress corner?

It's on the same side as the other crane, right on the corner of 2nd and Congress.

Great catch with the crane construction, priller. And nice black and whites. I love it when the sky is all gray and stormy looking behind the skyline. Especially with the sun in front of the skyline lighting the buildings against a ominous sky.

And those renderings aren't bad for Gables Park Plaza. I didn't realize Ziegler Cooper was designing it. They're also designing The Austonian. This could turn out to be a nice project after all.

By the way, here's an updated rendering of The Austonian's pool deck. If you'll notice however, there is something VERY strange with this photo.

It's the buildings across the street. They are the same buildings that are actually located further up Congress Avenue. Although one of those buildings looks like the Hampton Inn which is not on Congress. This is some artist's rendering of a scary alternate universe.

Either that or the person who made that image plays SimCity too much.

Just to clarify, the reason I said "scary alternative universe" is because no city should have two buildings that look like 823 Congress.

You are so right... I have never seen anything quite like it. On the one hand, they looked like ominous storm clouds, yet there were no storms to be foun, other than a few sprinkles up in Round Rock. And yes, they were incredibly low... I took a few pics yesterday in fact, and will post them for sure.

Kevin... that is without a doubt one of the strangest photo manipulations I have seen. Whats the point of cloning those buildings (and in a smaller scale at that)? Very bizarre.

The one that looks like the Hampton Inn is actually the Stephen F. Austin Hotel at 7th and Congress.

Yeah, that Hampton Inn look-a-like is actually the Stephen F. Austin Hotel as kingkirbythegreat said. The other buildings are 823 Congress and the Littlefield Building.

The only reason I can think of is maybe to show something substantial right up against the street over there. I guess they may have some hangups with having a vacant block (for the most part) right across Congress since their residents wouldn't have anything to do there. This is why I hope the Marriott has some retail. If not that would mean we would have no street level retail from 3rd Street all the way down to the river along Congress Avenue. Not good. All those 80s office towers, 301 Congress, One Congress Plaza and 100 Congress also have no street level retail. There should be some retail in the Marriott to offset that. Another thing I noticed with that rendering is that it shows the podium (pool deck level) to be higher than it actually is. The height I heard was 93 feet, but that rendering shows it to be almost as high as the Littlefield Building up the street which is 136 feet.

And I totally missed those clouds you guys were talking about. I wish I had caught them. I would have headed over to Saint Ed's for some skyline shots.

the pool is designed with a "tanning ledge", the chairs are supposed to sit in 6" or so of water
