Out of curiosity, what would the benefit be of voluntarily requesting historic status for a building?

It seems like it creates more paperwork for the owner.

You can get a heritage tax credit for the building equal to half of the value of the improvements. It's applied to the taxes of the building. If you spent $3m on improvements (not including TI's and other soft costs) you can get $1.5m of tax credits.

It's a bit more work but not much more. The heritage department is fairly accommodating.

That's a great find, Adrian.

Here is another subdivision advertisement. This time for the south side of Transcona Yards, a subdivision that lost out to the huge subdivision north of the yards that became present-day Transcona, although there are some streets and houses there, including a few dating back almost to this period. But only a tiny part of the grand plan in the advertisement was ever realized.

Interesting. That map shows the Dawson Road, which was one of the old trails to The Forks that pre-dated urbanization. I don't know east St. Boniface well at all, so I'm wondering if any of the Dawson Road exists in Winnipeg today as a street or otherwise.

I think that's regarding the flood of 1852 not 1952 (or 1950). Neat map. See how the oxbow in St. B (Enfield Cres) got filled in?

Dawson Road exists, and I'm pretty sure i remember some reference to Dawson Trail or something on Highway 1 east around Sandilands.

Yes, some of the Dawson Trail is still a road south of the No. 1 Highway in that area. In Winnipeg, Dawson Road is still mostly in existence.

I'm sad you don't see that sort of thing in neighbourhoods anymore.

Nor do you see the neighbourhood cinema. Here's what was playing on July 3, 1948:

And, in the pre-cinema days of Vaudeville, April 9, 1910:

^^It's really great that the Park reopened on Osborne south. It's become quite the hub. Maybe there's a future for the Kings and other theatres in the same situation.
