Has the new RSA building discussion quieted down or is everyone just taking a big breath?

I don't think there will be much contest to Bronner's plans. I do agree with most, that the ground level needs to be more pedestrian friendly. With all the money they are investing you would think that could come up with something unique for the road frontage.

i'm in for a lunch possibly.

RSA update
amy zimmer was stopped midway through her presentation during the city council meeting and told that Bronner was going to have a meeting with Landmarks Assc. this was news to Landmarks and since then I haven't heard one word as to an actual meeting. I think it was prob just to get people to shut up then do the project anyway.

I attended the official grand opening of the Renaissance Hotel and Spa yesterday afternoon. I didn't take any pics but there are alot of photo galleries on the Advertisers front page. This place is VERY NICE! Even got to tour the Presidential Suite which will be the one and only time I ever go in that room.

yeah, the Hotel/Convention Center was lit up like Vegas last night. The colored lights were dancing, the searchlights were going....

Good for special occasions.... I hope it's not like that all the time.

i've got the same fancy tub that fills from the ceiling and you can stay in my place for a month for $2000 and i've got a full kitchen. sounds better now doesn't it? $66 a night and you can use the extra money at the House restaurant in the Renaissance. Any takers?

Special Report: The Future of Downtown

A lot of people are calling Montgomery's new Renaissance Hotel and Spa an economic catalyst, prompting renewed interest in downtown. For years, city leaders have had a vision of what the area could become. But only now does it appear that vision is taking off.

So how do all the projects fit together? And how will they benefit you? WSFA 12 News takes a closer look.

Jerry Kyser is among the private developers who are banking on downtown's rebirth. His new restaurant is slated to open in a few months.

"I don't think most people understand how much money is going to come to downtown Montgomery with the new convention hotel," Kyser sad.

The front of Kyser's new restaurant faces Coosa Street. The back empties into the so-called Grocer's Alley. In the next few months, the city will transform the rundown alley way into a streetscape reminiscent of New Orleans' french quarter.

Shops, restaurants, and a state-of-the-art children's museum are already planning to move in. The alley is just steps from the new hotel and convention center.

"They alley is another way we hope to manifest this dream we have," said one of Mayor Bobby Bright's assistants, Jeff Downes.

The mayor's dream started eight years ago with the amphitheater and riverwalk. Soon, the riverwalk will connect via a pedestrian bridge to a new parking deck downtown.

Other downtown projects include:

Riverwalk Stadium, home to the Montgomery Biscuits
A new round-about at Court Square, complete with a free wi-fi hotspot
Updated street lights, traffic signals, and parking meters
Two more downtown parking decks under construction
Future work along Bell Street to beautify the downtown entryway into Maxwell Air Force Base
"Ultimately our goal, and the mayor's goal, is to see Montgomery vibrant 24 hours a day and seven days a week," Downes said.

"You have to remember, if you're going to have a city, you have to have a viable downtown," said Retirement Systems CEO David Bronner.

Bronner was among the first to see downtown's potential. Over the years, he financed nearly 2-dozen projects, including the new Renaissance hotel and convention center. Bronner also insisted that the complex include a performing arts theater as a way of attracting even more people to downtown.

The question now is, will all these government funded projects encourage the private sector to move downtown? City officials claim incentives and grants are already working their magic.

"We're very close to closing some of those deals," Downes said.

Chamber of commerce statistics show a total current investment in downtown of $1.1 billion. Officials say a majority of that amount is coming from private investors.

Investors are building new residential lofts, new office buildings, and don't forget Jerry Kyser's new restaurant!

"I think if you come back in 3-5 years, you will not recognize downtown Montgomery," Kaiser said.

i agree, we might fool a few people into thinking montgomery is a big city with lots of stuff going on. once they get off the interstate i will capture them and force them to pay me rent to live in my loft therefore converting them into montgomerians.

If not Auburn, how 'bout Montgomery?

The Alabama Aquarium organization is angling to bring an education and research facility to the state. One possibility could result in Auburn University reeling in the education destination.

By William White
O-A News
February 21, 2008

A fish tale it’s not.

The prospect of bringing the 6 million gallon Alabama Aquarium to Auburn University is part of a vision that sets a comprehensive public facility for aquatic and environmental education on a 100-acre site at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center on North College Street.

Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers was introduced to the idea of having The Alabama Aquarium in Auburn and presented a copy of a related proposal by District 2 Lee County Commissioner Johnny Lawrence Wednesday.

“There is a group called The Alabama Aquarium, and they want to build a world-class aquarium in Alabama,” Lawrence said. “Right now they are looking at Auburn University and its fisheries program.”

The county commissioner said the group wants to build an aquarium with education as its primary focus.

“Not just for the children and parents that come there, but this could become the training center for aquariums all over the country and the world for that matter.

“They are preparing this (proposal) to go to the (AU) president,” Lawrence told Rogers. “We want to make you aware that this proposal is on the table.”

Pointing out the locations of a new aquarium, Auburn University and the Celebrate Alabama project in Opelika, Lawrence said, “You have AU here, Celebrate Alabama project here and then add an aquarium here, then Auburn, Opelika and Lee County become a place for people to come and stay for the weekend and boost tourism for the area.

Rogers asked who served on the group’s board and finished with, “It’s a great idea.”

The internal proposal, which suggests AU as a potential site, hasn’t gone to the university’s president for consideration of committing 100 acres of university land at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center for the site.

In a telephone interview, the executive director for the organization said the non-profit The Alabama Aquarium was formed in 2002, and has a seven-member board made up of an attorney, educators, a judge and a city councilman. Locally, Dr. John Jensen of Auburn serves on the board.

While the aquarium’s future waters may be muddy now, The Alabama Aquarium’s vision is clear.

“Jensen came to me and asked me if we wanted to look into Auburn as a possible site,” said Dr. R Will Vanoy, executive director for The Alabama Aquarium. “Just looking at the tie-in of what we have planned for The Alabama Aquarium and just some of the remarkable potential in partnering with Auburn University is intriguing and something we want to pursue.

“We are looking at other areas,” Vanoy said.

He said he hopes the white paper, or proposal, will be presented to AU’s president in the next few weeks.

“I am hopeful. I am intrigued by Auburn,” Vanoy said. “I am very interested in pursuing that location.

“I think it would be a wonderful, wonderful place for us, but we are looking at some other areas as well and very soon will send out requests for proposals to various cities throughout the state of Alabama.”

Asked about the vision, Vanoy said the concept is Alabama’s waters all the way to the Gulf of Mexico — rivers, streams, lakes and ponds.

“The concept of this aquarium came many, many years ago and the purpose behind it was Alabama has the most natural resources of water among any state in the United States with more than 77,000 miles of navigable waters in our state.

“Alabama seems like the no-brainer place to discuss natural resources,” he said.

“The goal for The Alabama Aquarium is that of an educational facility foremost,” Vanoy said. “A tie-in with Auburn University, a partnership with them, really strengthens the education concept of the aquarium.”

Vanoy said, “The exciting thing for us and for Auburn University really should be how this project affects all of the departments,” The proposal suggests that the aquarium would benefit the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures by allowing AU to develop new teaching, research and outreach programs in aquatic sciences and possibly establish a Center for Advanced Studies in Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture as well as business, architecture, building science, education, engineering, vet medicine, forestry and wildlife sciences, and others like all of the arts.

“There is a huge impact the university can have on us, and we can have on the university,” Vanoy said.

He said the impact of the two of us partnering together can have on this state and nation are enormous.

“The more I talk about it the more excited I get,” the executive director said.

The proposal suggests there is a strong local interest in the aquarium and a willingness by Lee County and the city of Auburn to fund a $30,000 to $50,000 market survey to assess the feasibility of the project.

The Alabama Aquarium is expected to be an $120 million dollar investment that includes the main aquarium, an education center and an amphitheater.

I'm not a stalker or anything but I am curious -- does anyone know where (specifically) Bobby & Lynn Bright have moved? I know it's a loft downtown but which lofts development or it it one they've done for themselves?

On North Court, The Alps Loft Apartments take up two buildings.
There are four lofts at the Ice House, seven at The — Shop, and 11 lofts at 246 Lofts.

Relocated Bright confirms campaign

By Jill Nolin
[email protected]

Mayor Bobby Bright has been walking to and from work for the last week and half, going home for lunch and walking his dog, Max, around downtown for exercise.

Bright, who has confirmed he is running for Congress, has put his Wynlakes home on the market and has moved into a loft apartment on North Court Street in downtown Montgomery. He said he, his wife and Max moved in more than one week ago.

"I'm loving it. I really am," Bright said Friday of his new home.

The decision to move was partly due to empty-nest syndrome -- the Brights' youngest daughter is away at Auburn University -- but Bright admitted that the move was also made so he would be in District 2. District 2 goes as far southeast as Dothan and as far northwest as Prattville.

It's tight quarters in the near 2,000-square foot apartment, which was a produce building decades ago. The Brights are accustomed to a 5,000-square-foot home, but the mayor said he and his wife didn't the need extra space now that their three children have moved out.

Bright talked about the new loft apartment on Friday, the same day he officially said he is announcing a run for the congressional seat being vacated by Terry Everett, who announced in September that he is retiring.

Bright said Friday that he plans to make an official public announcement at noon Tuesday at the Dale County Courthouse in Ozark. Bright grew up on a cotton farm in rural Dale County, and he said he wants to make the announcement with family and friends at his side.

Bright, who plans to be his own campaign manager, said he does not plan to vacate the mayor's office. If he wins, City Council President Charles Jinright would become the active mayor until a special election is held.

The mayor made assurances on Friday that his campaign would not distract him from carrying out the city's business.

"I promise -- no part-time mayor," Bright said.

he's living in anna and harvey's loft at 246. the one they lived in before moving to cloverdale. he was going to live in mine until a few days before he worked a deal with them. i'm guessing it has to do with the proximity to city hall and more parking nearby. plus their loft was a little larger than mine.

I'd like to attend as well. I have an appointment at 10:00 AM and am not sure how long it will run. If it wraps in time, I will be there...
