They've put the very top part of the spire on the building and have put some glass on the spire. Most of the work now is interior, though there is still some exterior touch ups to do. Some of the striping like you talked about is still being worked on. I noticed not all the railings are installed on the balconies either.

I'm working on putting a photo thread together in a few days and I've gotten some close ups of the facade and spire. The Monarch is also coming along nicely. I'm really liking that building.

....so new hotel across from Driskill, do you think it will be a 6 stars, with one of those rooftop pool 820 feet in the air.

I hope so, it will be Austin first 6 stars hotel!

Oh great... Let's hope since the hotel/condo tower is supposed to be the new tallest in Austin, they won't opt for a glass box for either building.

Honestly though, I'm a little excited to see the rendering considering the Pelli firm is going to be the architect -- maybe the building will have a nice crown on top.

I haven't heard much about D2 lately (aka: The Domain). Anybody know if there any new buildings going up on the site?

So this is a little bit different info from last week's news. From the previous news I was under the impression that the hotel/condo would be across Brazos where this indicates the new parking garage will be. I could have just misunderstood, though.

And I didn't know there will be a new stand-alone parking garage. I know we need more parking downtown, let's hope it's not as ugly as most parking garages are.

That block will end up being very dense. Like a real city!

And at least this eyesore will be gone:

I wonder what they'll tell the people that live in those apartments right there... With the city concentrating so much development in small areas, I've noticed the warehouse district with all of the bars will become a big hole in the skyline. Is that area being avoided or has that area's day hasn't come yet?

In regard to the Warehouse Dist. Yes... it would very well get walled in by skyscrapers.

I hope that the new Roma downtown plan preserves districts like this [6th, Warehouse, etc] and prevents high rises unless they go up on surface parking lots or in place of parking garages.. Original buildings with some history can not be recreated.

Seems like some good opportunity with the large surface lot by Starlite/Speakeasy. Probably some Congress frontage as well...

A crane went up at Burnet & Kramer about two weeks ago, and excavated material (aka: dirt) is piling-up along Burnet across from IBM. If you go by there at night you can watch the pretty sign change colors.

I wouldn't call it a "hole in the skyline". I see it as necessary texture and relief from the highrises. I Love the highrises and all.... you just have to know Austin to know that the entertainment districts are the heart of what has brought folks to downtown. Kill that and.... well... I'm sure you have heard the rest. (And no.... moving them all to new buildings will not be the same.....)

Save our entertainment district and Save our Noise! (no more sound ordinances!)

A few shots from today. Mainly it was an excuse to try out my new camera. As much as I love my Nikon DSLR, and it is wonderful, it's a little bulky and conspicuous and carrying around the lenses can be a pain. And since about all I do with these building pics is post them on the web, I decided to get a good quality compact as my "walking around downtown" camera. So I got a Canon G9 after reading a great article about it on www.luminous-landscape.com. I also got an add-on grip and extension tube, which makes it much easier to handle, at least for me. Here's a photo from that article:

Anyway, on to the photos.

Those pictures show how nice the weather is for moving portoilets with a crane, as well as constructing a very nice building.

I always refer to it as "A-M-L-I". It may be "amlee", but it just sounds wrong because it's an acronym.

I think this situation is one where the easiest way to pronounce it usually wins out. Like has anyone ever heard someone spell out these acronyms instead of pronouncing them?
