More pics from my quick Chicago adventure.... 2/26/08

My friend noticed the balconies the closer she got, and thought it was pretty cool....

...and as it has been noticed, it's pretty cool from this angle.

^ Looks like we're going to see the other type of glass soon, when it hits those sections where there are no balconies.

I am mesmerized by this thing, at least from these close up shots.

Regardless how mundane this will look from a distance, the view from directly below will more than make up for it

Glad you came and took so many good pix, Simcity -- thanks for posting them on several of these threads

I'm also glad you made it back from the future -- what was the weather like on the 26th?

Huh? What's different about the glass? I didn't know there were two types.

Gang indicated that an unexpected part of this design happened when they started looking at solar heat gain. Where the balconies disappear, there was the need for glass of a different type because it won't be in shade during summer. This was unanticipated, but she said that the firm just kind of ran with the idea, letting the 'building decide' (not her exact words) what it needed, and hence what it looks like. It's a very Chicago-school notion, in a way.

aaron38: Jeanne Gang had been quoted in the media stating that a second type of glass which was more reflective may be used in the areas where the balconies cut to zero feet back into the building. It was said that doing so would further enhance the ripple wave effect.

^^^ Interesting, that makes me nervous that it could mess of the design, then again it could add equally as much to the design...

Haha, the future is great, I'm in the time machine business you know. I really enjoyed my trip on the 16th though. The only regret I have is not making it to the the Auto Show.

On an Aqua related note - Out of all the buildings I went to visit, this site was definetly the most active. Guys on the ground, in the building, on top. There's a reason this one moves so fast. I can't imagine the coordination this one takes.

Interesting about the reflective glass for heat gain.
If Gang is "letting the building decide", I wonder if that means the North face would remain normal, as it will only see summer sun in early morning, late evening, when the light is weak.

I was roaming around your fair city on Saturday as well! Having now seen this in person I found it to be completely infatuating. I can't wait to see it at 80 floors. For those worried that the shapes of the balconies will 'disappear' at a distance, remember that this thing is only at like 15 floors right now. At 80 floors with the variation in shapes, you'll have to be awful far away for it to simply appear like a big boring box. Especially if the sun is out.

Yeah, it's a big simple structure that right now looks like something out of the 1960's...but I give Gang total credit for doing something exciting, unexpected, and sensual with something so boring as an 80 story slab of concrete...and getting the developer to pay for it!!!

I wasn't so sure about this building when I first saw it, but these recent pics have swayed me. Can't wait to see this building progress.

I love this shot. I stared at it for like 5 minutes. There's so much going on in it.

Very well said. The way the architects designed this to look like the wind coming of the lake was manipulating the surface, struck me when it was first rendered, and still strikes me now. This is a very unique building.

I think this shot says it all.

how do you guys think railings will eventually effect the fluidity of the balconies?

^ I don't think there's any way the railings won't mess it up a little. But the architects were smart enough to keep them a dark color, so hopefully they will recede in places where the perspective isn't great enough to eliminate them from view.

I agree with what you're saying, but it's really not detailed in a sophisticated way like a Miesian box. So, I would hesitate to call it "perfect" in that regard.

This is ok with me, but I do think the distinctions are greater.

I actually think the railings will help make the waves decipherable from a distance. Right now, when i look at the building head on, i'm a bit dissappointed, but i think the rallings will give the visual mass needed to make the waves effect work.

As of now, the place to view this building is from underneath, where it is really exciting. Which is fine, mind you, if the building never quite achieves from a distance what it does up close. Only the most incredible buildings are great from any vantage point.
