$7 million being invested in rehab of historic Boston Building

Now in its 100th year at 9 Exchange Place in downtown Salt Lake City, the Boston Building is being completely renovated and restored to bring back the elegance it had when it was built in 1907.

Hamilton Partners, which acquired the Boston Building last April, is investing more than $7 million to refurbish the 107,000 square foot building and restore it to near historical accuracy.

"We have been taking every opportunity we can to restore and try to bring back the original feel of the Boston Building," said Eric Smith of CB Richard Ellis, leasing agent for the building. "We're trying to bring back some of the original finishes that we know of. We're trying to bring back the ceiling heights and raise them back up to 10 feet or higher, we're trying to restore some of the window moldings that are remaining in the building, we're restoring the lobby and just doing things to bring the building back to the way it should be."

To begin the restoration, Hamilton Partners completely gutted the building above the first floor lobby in order to install a new heating and air conditioning system, new electrical systems and to provide the building with a sprinkler system. Ceilings in the first and second floor lobbies will be raised to 14 feet, and ceilings on the 11th floor will be raised to their original 16-foot height. In addition, all elevators in the building will be replaced.

This looks pretty bad. The base is terrible and ruins a very nice historical building.

yeah I don't like the base much either. When I saw this project the base was kind of messed up already, do we have any original photos of the building so we can see what they should restore it to?

the base looks like it is a modern slap-on to a fairly attractive historic building... certain structures have a more timeless architecture about them, and I think its really sh*tty when they slap on facade's that reflect a particular style.. I know in Idaho Falls they did that to much of the downtown buildings back in the 70's and now they're ripping it all down to restore the buildings to their origional style.. with modern upgrades of course..

The trouble with the modern facade is it's too imposing. Too big, bulky. They could have a "different style" on the bottom - but that huge awning thing blocks out the view of the upper floors from the street.

In all, it's pretty icky.

Delta merger target Northwest adds second route to SLC in less than a week

Northwest Airlines, which is trying to hammer out a merger deal with Delta Air Lines, will launch the first nonstop route between its Detroit hub and Delta's hub in Salt Lake City.
It's the second time in less than a week that Northwest has added flights in Salt Lake. Last Thursday, the Eagan, Minn.-based carrier said it was adding a third daily flight between Salt Lake City International Airport and Minneapolis.
Beginning June 5, the Detroit flight will depart Salt Lake at noon and arrive at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport at 5:30 p.m., Northwest said Monday.
Return flights leave Detroit at 10:40 a.m. and arrive in Salt lake at 12:40 p.m.
Northwest will fly the route with a 124-seat A319 Airbus jet.
On the merger front, Delta's board of directors is expected to meet Wednesday to consider a merger agreement with Northwest, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported.
Delta and Northwest have not confirmed they are negotiating a deal.

Here is an old photo of the building that I found from the Shipler collection at the Utah State History website. This photo was taken in 1909, so it looks like another floor was added to the building at a later date.

I don't see why they can't go back to the classic base. I think the windows offer a far better look than what they have proposed.

Just my own opinion, but they should put back the big glass windows for the base and do something differnet with the top of the building, like add the 3 round windows on either side and the arch window at the top center just like the original or something pretty close to it. Anthony

I agree Comrade. It would be nice if they spent the money in restoring the building rather than changing it.

I was glad to read that Hamilton Partners is putting all that money into restoring the Boston Building to as close to its original as possible.

It is a good idea to mention it to them, but as we all know sometimes it doesn't matter how good of an idea it is, the architect thinks his idea is the ultimate, case in point. Urban Boy's skybridge versus the pile of steaming dung we currently have as a design.

Gee architects thought they new what was awesome back in the brutalist era of architecture. Oops. No offense to any of you architects out there. I'm simply in a pesimistic mood today.

Sandy has been studying the issue for about a year and a half and has the funding in place for a development near 10100 south and 250 West that would include a theater...
