^ Thanks for the pics.

I don't know why you said Library Tower "restoration" though. It's actually a new construction project

^^ Thanks! I swear the sign by the site said restoration...I have to say, the South Loop is quite fun to walk around. It's like a city within a city. Everything is new and a little different style wise.

Thank you Sim City - I haven't seen some of these - and definitely not from those angles. Please come and visit again.

Hydrogen up to the usual standards unobtainable by us mere mortals.

The Downtowners
A condo boom is reshaping the focus of Evanston

By Dan Rafter | Special to the Tribune
February 17, 2008

Two more winters shoveling sidewalks and dumping salt on her front steps: That's how Anne Jacobson is counting the moments until she can move into Winthrop Club, a 15-story luxury condo tower rising in downtown Evanston.

New rendering for Metro Center 290 - includes both towers. I gotta say, damn this thing looks cool, especially by West Loop standards. I'm tempted almost to wish we got this instead of B37. This is the Jackson facade.

^ Is this the Sundance Cinema project? If so, I heard the the NIMBY's have been unsuccessful in blocking this one (from a west looper, although I'm not too confident in the reliability of this info).

On another note, can somebody tell me if the developers of Trio actually plan to build this giant parking lot above the rail lines, or is this just a conceptual rendering?

Sniped from the Evanston article...

Quote:
Some who question the continuing rise of construction cranes downtown suggest future projects should be spread out."We should be looking closely at how much more development we can take," said Anna Renee Ross, co-chairman of the city's 5th Ward Community Development Committee. "Is it logical for there to be so much building in downtown? Do they have to keep building there? It's already one of the most congested areas on earth."
That is such an absurd statement, downtown Evanston's congestion level is nowhere near bad. Does congestion-free to these people mean seeing no other cars on the road?

This raises the question, which would you rather see? Exposed railways, or a parking lot?

^re: sundance 290,
was by there earlier today, demolition is progressing rapidly on the old factory on the site. This will be a great addition to the neighborhood. Now we just need more and more residential units to actually get a little activity on those moribund streets and get some businesses in the multitude of vacant retail spots.

^re: Trio parking,
That parking is, I think, actually part of the Jewel development just to the north.

^re: Evanston being one of the most congested places on Earth,
Morons.

Chicago photos

Chicago had a lot of rain today, and I liked the way it looked with a shimmer of water laid over the iced lake.

Agreed on everything above. The parking above the tracks is still pretty efficient land usage, so I really can't complain about it, aside from aesthetics.

Also, that lady from Evanston needs to see Calcutta or Mumbai to clarify what some of the world's worst congestion really looks like.

mediaman,
Great HDR stuff. Navy Pier shot kicks ass; that reflection in the icy water is priceless. How many photos did you take of each scene to achieve that sort of range? If I had to guess I'd randomly say 5. Or is it a fabled faux-HDR filter?
