also, there are enough social housing units in the downtown eastside why is the the government hell bent on keeping the area a ghetto???

For once I agree with you on your statement, why is the government so inclined and stubborn
on keeping the homeless in the DTES, why no try to relocate in other area, they the homeless weren't all born in this area, fuck the nymbies
and diversify, why keep DTES such a ghetto style area is beyond any common senses.
They are enough social housing around here is coming out of my ying yang, plus there are co-ops and now tons of SRO, please get with the program, I am truly fed up with this nonsense , I reside in Gastown for the last five years, we fought tools and nail to make this area more livable despite all the f****ing junkies and mental challenged and now the hooligans and drunken assh***les on our doorstpes pestering our lives day in and day out plus the week-end.
Now well turn this shitholes into a ghetto and blame it on us who paid a mint for a little peace of mind called home ownership, as owners we feel like we are the one's being pushed out so these truants can take over.
We worked years to enter the housing market and until our mortgage is paid we still have to work hard to own and live here, now must we all give it up!

the concentration of poverty and addiction is what keeps that area such a festering sore. keep those kind of forces together and you preserve a toilet drain basically. such bad decision making. screwed up people don't heal or change when they're surrounded by other screwed up people.

it's like yaletown: how can those people spiritually evolve out of their soulless yuppie shells when they're only surrounded by fellow shells?

This isn't too bad actually, most of those units are existing SROs not much new capacity is being added here, these will all be renovated/improved and be better run by the government then by some slumlord. I'm not famaliar with who has been running these hotels but it is probably a safe bet that not much care is given to what goes on in them.

The Westcoast Homes insert in today's Vancouver Sun has a small pic of a model of the Beasley on the table of contents page - rather disappointing - esp. the podium.

A clear pic will be available on the Vancouver Sun's website - it's not up yet though.

RE; the beasley

i got a copy of 'yaletown magazine' and they have a feature article on the beasley (no pic). they mention that there will be a 60-foot long dog run on the 8th floor garden terrace where "owners can chat as their companions romp and play together". the track will be surrounded by landscaping and park benches.

thought that was a neat feature. given how many dogs there are in yaletown, i'm sure it'll be a selling tool.

I'd use it... if other people clean up after their dogs.

There's a rooftop grassy area on the townhouses at Yaletown Park (across from the Beasley site - I've seen a lot of dogs up there - not sure if it designated for that though).

I agree 100%. It's a big shame as a developer had previously bought those SRO's in 2005. I was hoping he (Mr. Wilson) was going to turn them into rental housing or condos and the City would build social housing elsewhere. Imo gentrification of the DTES will never happen. It could... the market forces are there, but all levels of government choose to keep it the way it is. I hope the foreign cameras have a field day in 2010. "Best place on earth". I can't wait to see the cartoons in the British press.

So what if those units are existing SRO's? The only way to improve the area is to reduce the amount of social housing in the area and encourage market housing, which in turn will encourage businesses to the area.

^^

I don't think the British have much room to talk about the DTES. It would be conveniently ignoring a lot of the problems their overly socialist nanny state has.

Rexall at International Village seems to be moving along very well. I imagine they will be open sometime next month. About time as we need a national drug store in the Crosstown area......also a florist opened up next to the Asian DVD place in the retail base of Firenze....and a few other units are leased it seems.....

ALSO there is a DP application for the back side of the project. I always thought that the parking lot left behind Firenze would be a Elementary school.......apparently it is half for a school and the other half of the site is for an assisted living facilty that will be 4 stories......there is a development permit application sign up for that now.......

on that note a few pics from my new diggs in well Crosstown @ Spectrum >> http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=146119

Thanks for the info - tought it was just for a school too.

I see you have ready access to the FatBurger...

****

1212 Howe is being advertised in the paper (I think somone else mentioned it too) - it must be the old rental tower (above the Fitness World) that is being completely reclad.

Is there really room behind Firenze for both an elementary school and a four storey assisted living centre?

Will the playground adjacent Firenze be absorbed into the school?

looks like enough room. i imagine there would be no blank walls facing the park so the buildings could run the entire lenght of Firenzi

ironically, this was passed at city council on tuesday;

THAT Council receive a payment of $2.1 million from Henderson Development in lieu of building a community centre space within the International Village development with these funds to be reallocated as follows.
i. $1,770,000 for the restoration of the artificial playing fields at Andy
Livingstone Park; and
ii. $330,000 to expand the proposed childcare at International Village from 45 to 49 spaces.

that shot shows the 2 sites perfectly....the assisted living site is a small rectangular site closest to Keefer taking up just about 2 dozen of so of the surface stalls.....

while the out of shape square site fronting Expo Blvd is the School site....I think the school will be 2 floors but will probably be the same height as the 4 floor assisted living facility.

I could not find anything on the city website on this......so I had to walk the dog over and read the sign up close......I originally saw it while on skytrain. 55 Keefer is the assisted livings proposed address.
