I noticed a large crane in the air on riverside near pillette village. Looks to me like it's right beside the Gates of Glengarda condo. Another high-rise condo?

Yup, a 10-story senior's living complex is going up there. Not totally sure, but I think I read in the Star that it's a Chuck Mady development.

London Bids to Host World Junior Hockey Championships

LONDON - The City of London has decided to make another bid for World Junior Hockey Championships.
In a combined bid with Windsor, a letter of intent has been sent to Hockey Canada advising them two two cities will bid for the 2012 tournament.

London submitted a bid for the 2006 tournament, but lost to Vancouver.

Edmonton and Calgary will also be bidding for the 2012 Championship.

I read up on this in the Star. We're competing against Toronto, Edmonton-Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Halifax. Supposedly half the games would be played at the W.F.C.U. Centre and the other half at the JLC in London.

Windsor-London? I would wait until Detroit finalizes its plans to replace the JLA and pursue a joint Windsor-Detroit bid. That makes much more sense (no two-hour winter drives on the most deadly part of the 401).

Hockey Canada will not allow two countries to have a joint bid so the Windsor/Detroit thing won't happen.

I cannot see this tournament happening in London/Windsor. The JLC is just too small to host the big games. The other cities that are bidding have arenas that hold 15,000 to 20,000 people and the JLC holds 9090. It is a shame because London and Windsor are the heart and soul of junior hockey unlike the larger cities of Canada.

The winter drive to/from London would indeed be treacherous. I'd love to see the games held in both cities once we have some sort of new high speed rail infrastructure in place in the Quebec City - Windsor corridor. Not only that, but the WFCU Centre's proximity to the likely-to-be-abandoned VIA line could make for an ideal LRT type line to/from this new proposed Windsor Airport VIA station.

But all dreaming aside, I have doubts that this region will ever upgrade to a new level of mass transit. Still, it would be VERY nice.

Looks like downtown is getting closer to putting up that 14 story office tower as mentioned earlier (14 stories above the tunnel, hmmm). From AM800:

Plans are in the works for a $26 million office tower in downtown Windsor. The 14-storey building would be located on Riverside Drive just east of Ouellette Avenue. Mihail Holdings say it already has a major tenant lined up and hopes to start construction in 2010.

Hopefully they can fill the whole thing, and maybe attract some downtown interest to fill Candarel..

have they settled on the airport for a new VIA station? because i thought that someone had floated a plan to put it downtown along wyandotte inbetween downtown and the university.

and i've never understood the logic of putting windsor's VIA station all the way out at the airport... it makes no sense.

^ I think the Via-airport idea was what was originally talked about when Sam Schwartz came out with his first recommendations (I think in 2004) for building a multi-modal transportation facility at the airport.

Lately, the Windsor star has been suggesting in articles about consolidating rail yards, that the city wants this station on Crawford between Tecumseh and Wyandotte.

I honestly don't know though... the airport is definitely "way out there". But what's one more thing moved to the 'burbs in the eyes of city planners. Arggggh!

It would be nice to see windsor get something taller than 15 stories (other than the casino) to contrast against the Detroit skyline. An office building like 30 stories high would be ideal. Too bad Chrysler back out a few years ago.

Why till 2010 for the new office tower? And I thought we had lots of empty office space. But if they say they got a major tenant then it should be a go. I agree with you WindsorDetroit, it's a shame Chrysler pulled out on that one. I worked security at the Canderel, the cameras are fun.

if you ask me... height means nothing. density and livability should be what windsor is aiming for. i'd much rather see a more paris-like series of vibrant, medium density city blocks over the occasional tall building surrounded by parking lots over in detroit...

If this new tower is going where I think it is then you can probably say goodbye to Papa Cheneys whiskey well. I cant see that skinny little building being wedged between the 20 story Condo building and a 14 story office building. As much as I would like to see a tall building in Windsor as well, I have to agree with Arnold. Density would be alot nicer. Kind of like Ottawa. They dont have many tall buildings but they have blocks upon blocks of midrise towers. Its got a real urban atmosphere.

Can Windsor even occupy the low level buildings that it has in the downtown now? The Chrysler building has been there for almost five years now and hasn't been occupied, a major portion of the buildings in the downtown core are vacant and businesses continue to shut down, why would anyone develop a highrise with the need for tenants?

The Chrysler tower is completely full now. The only part that is vacant is one spot on the ground level. The Keg restaraunt and Scotia bank as well as the Chrysler lobby occupy the rest. I heard that the tennant for the new tower could possibly be TD Canada Trust. At this point I dont think that Windsor could support a 30 something story office building. The demand for office space in Windsor isn't very high right now. Although you know what they say...If you build it, they will come!

last year when i was in windsor, it still looked like the whole stretch of retail along pitt street was empty. and comprised a lot of space... has someone moved in?
