No, there was another major hotel proposal next to the Plaza of Nations many many many years ago, about 80 storeys i think. The Fringe Tower and the most recent hotel proposal is completely different.

There is rumour that Arthur Erickson is planning an 80 story building called The Fringe for the eastside of downtown Vancouver. Any truth to the rumour? Hopeful.

The last we heard about the Fringe Tower project was in late 2004. It appears to have been more of a concept rather than a serious proposal (ie: no development permit application was ever filed; a specific building site wasn't even named). We'll be sure to post on it, if the Fringe ever gets resurrected. -eds.

^ it's a rumour that is basically dead....Erickson has since said that he will add one floor each year to represent his age. He's 84 this year, so the tower is now 84 floors....that makes the entire project a complete joke. The design was said to be harp-shaped with cables, and with a titanium shell theatre at the base.

The hotel planned for the Plaza of Nations was never 80 storeys, there was a rumour of a 1000+ room hotel there but it would've only have been ~30 storeys in height. But was still when the convention centre might have been built there. This was around the same time as the Wynn hotel/casino next to Canada place.

In my defence, it was the man in the orange vest that told me about it.

I heard that the hotel by plaza of nations was to be 50 storeys, this from an assistant manager at the casino... he was not wearing an orange vest.

A hotel for the Plaza of Nations was approved by the City of Vancouver in maybe the late 1990s, but Canadian Metropolitan Properties did not proceed with it. As JLousa mentioned, it was about 30 storeys (all glass curtain wall - there was a rendering onone of the architects' websites (Architectura?) but with the various mergers, etc. it disappeared). It also pre-dates the existing Edgewater casino (so any current rumours would probably be a different or at least modified project).

^ yes..glass curtain wall and it had a bit of shark tooth looking top. Might have also had a slight curve outwards of one of the walls leading up to tallest point(the tip of the tooth). There were renderings posted before somewhere, might be possible for someone to find them still.

Can anyone confirm the 36 storey, 400 foot tower proposal in the Lonsdale area? Is it green-lighted?

no retractable roof for BC place! it would be way to difficult and cost way too much to retrofit. this thread isn't for starting your own rumours you know!
