If so, maybe it could be to support that building some how (maybe the frame will be lowed over it or under it?)
as per usual I think you are correct ..... I was thinking it was some sort of support to be used during excavation and shoring/support for the heritage building construction and then removed.

I haven't been by there for awhile. I hadn't realized they'd closed off the whole street.

I was in Vancouver last week and saw that. I was wondering why there was the steel frame structure extending out onto the sidewalk.

The steel frame is now on top of the heritage buildings. The biggest section is directly on top of the red building

February 4th, a small update

Pender street elevation. The two heritage buildings are fully braced now. The cream coloured one on the left is only having its facade preserved while the old mining museum building beside it is being saved in its entirety.

(My photo, taken February 4th, 2008)

Detail of the bracing and I guess a nice promo BelPacific (For all your excavation and shoring needs, call BelPacific today!)

(My photo, taken February 4th, 2008)

Why is BelPacific on site? Because there is excavation underway. Finally. For real this time.

So they are basically suspending those heritage buildings while excavating underneath? That is awesome.

I can't believe how long it's been since this project first came up. I remember talking to the sales staff in 2005. I should have bought a few units, they'd be like double the price by now.

I agree. I've never seen it done before (although I'm sure it has been done countless times).

Application to insert the floor JLousa mentioned. Note also existing application to convert big units to smaller ones.

http://vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/cclerk/...cuments/p4.pdf

Quote:
Rezoning application has been submitted on behalf of the property owner and developer to
increase the maximum residential floor area by 809 m² (8,709 sq. ft.). This would increase
total residential floor area in the building from 18 628.4 m2 (200,521 sq. ft.) to 19 437 m2
(209,239 sq. ft.), an increase of 4.34 percent. The number of dwelling units would be correspondingly increased by 6, from 131 to 137. (Note: A DE minor amendment is in process to change 7 large units into 14 smaller units. This would raise the total dwelling count to 144.)

...
The proposed additional floor area would be utilized within the approved form of
development for the site. Building height will not be altered. Although the number of
residential floors would be increased from 25 to 26, the additional floor would be inserted
without altering the approved form of development and with no change in the maximum total
height [118.5 m. (389 ft.)]. The change in residential floor to floor height would largely be
absorbed by a floor assembly of reduced thickness.

One of the most complicated and biggest project of that sort was done in MONTREAL at la place de la Cathedrale where they dug underneath the entire Cathedral and suspended for over a year to built around and below a shopping centre and a office high rise at the southern part of the cathedral.
I always marvelled at the ingenuity of the builders in having such great insight in relation to safeguard heritage structure, the Cathedral on St-Catherine Street was truly a feast in itself as it was and still is one of the most unique building of its era, well preserved.

^Incredible.

I stumbled upon the showroom of this bad boy last night and it looks pretty damn impressive. You can easily see right through the window into the display suite which is completely circular and very futuristic.I drooled for awhile and then finally had to pry myself away.

You and I, I drool every time I get a chance to set my eyes on it, it is quite impressive with the second level and private balcony, remind me of the Jetsons

What's the estimated completion on this, nowadays? 2011 or more?

I was only interested in investing in this project at the very beginning because I wanted to get a chance to play with the automated parking garage...

Yeah, I wondered about that actually. What happens when it's like 8AM and everybody wants to leave for the day? Do you have to wait for half an hour?
