It's a neat video, Portage Place looks great in black and white.
Cool video and not a bad song either. I often thought about riding my bike through the skywalk/mall system as a teenager myself. Been away too long, nice to see the thatres open again at PP.

^ give me a beak. Sam has nothing to do with any positive growth that the city may be experiencing. The pump was primed by Murray (MTS, Hydro, Waterfront Drive, the Bridge, and the overall housing boom is not a result of anything Sam did. Any grade school kid can figure that out.

The dramatic increase in business investment which wasn't there during the wasted Murray years, has a great deal with Katz.

Murray had little to do with planning of the MTS centre... but I will give him credit on getting on board with the idea, years after he voted against building an arena for the Jets while we still has a NHL team. What a guy.

I'm not a big fan of Sam Katz, but I do believe that Glen Murray gets wayyyy too much credit for a lot of the things that have happened downtown since the '99 Pan Am games.

If one was reading this thread for the first time you'd swear that Glen was a living God that walked among men.

Please fellas let's have a little common sense here.

Murray was famous for taking credit for a lot of other peoples work and in the end was every much just as big a talking head as Katz.

I'm still waiting for a mayor who isn't affraid to stick around and fight for this city.

No kidding..

Purhaps we have a bunch of socailist lovers ... thankfully those days are over. Now people who were forced to leave due to a poor economy out can plan there return with great optimism.

His anecdotes on the photo subject usually digressed into other anecdotes. He grew up in Point Douglas, I think it was on Lorne or Lisgar Streets. This kind of personal attachment and knowledge of the neighborhood was really evident in his talk at the book launch, and really evident in his photos. Any good photographer could have taken good photos of the North End 25-30 years ago: it was a very quirky time and place, in transition from vibrancy to decline, but Paskievich captures it better because he knew the neighborhood.

Here are a few that I've scanned:

No, Newflyer is right about this at least to a point.

Katz has been in office now long enough to get some credit for the state of the city whether it be positive or negative. Murray gets credit for setting the stage in my opinion and I wish we had him back but by now it's undeniable that some things are the result of Katz's work. My beef with Katz is that he's no visionary and he moves too slow. Otherwise, he's not really a bad mayor, just rather humdrum.

Because the State of the City address much like its provincial counterpart hosted by Doer has increasingly become a forum to rehash last year's accomplishments.

I don't care about what happened last year or the year before. I want to hear the plan for next year and the ten years after that.

Furthermore, I don't want to hear about how the city is finally paving its streets or that garbage collection is running on time. These are things that should happen automatically regardless of who is in charge. In my opinion, taking credit for getting these things done is a bold omission to the public that you haven't been doing too much with your time in office.

Imagine if I held a press conference everytime I cut my hair or toenails?

Yet, Doer and Katz routinely hold similar announcements for new hospital equipment, transit improvements, etc.

ADEQUATELY MAINTAINING THE STATUS QUO DOES NOT COUNT AS VISION.

Its my firm believe that government should set the stage for progress and development, but it shouldn't try to take credit for major government developements while the actual economy suffers.

.... but as they say the proof is in the pudding. Most of the business community in attendance rate Sam as very good for the city economy.

Conference board bullish on Winnipeg in 2008
To be 3rd in economic growth after Calgary, Edmonton

Tue Jan 22 2008

By Larry Kusch

MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS
City posted economic growth of 3.9 per cent in 2007, its best since '97.

WINNIPEG will sport the third-strongest economy among Canadian cities this year because of a continuing construction boom and a thriving manufacturing sector, the Conference Board of Canada said Monday.

The think-tank projects that Winnipeg's census metropolitan area (CMA), which includes bordering municipalities, will enjoy real economic growth of 3.4 per cent in 2008, trailing only those of Calgary (4.2 per cent) and Edmonton (4 per cent).

The board said in its Metropolitan Outlook the city posted economic growth of 3.9 per cent last year, its best showing since 1997 and fourth best in Canada.

John McCallum, a University of Manitoba economist, said he feels the conference board's growth projections are generally a little too robust, although he doesn't dispute Winnipeg's No. 3 ranking.

"I'm not surprised at all that they have Calgary and Edmonton and Winnipeg high relative to other cities in Canada," McCallum said.

"I'm surprised that they have Winnipeg up at such a high number because for some time now, I've been thinking that Canada is going to get growth around two or two and a quarter per cent this year," he said.

"I just don't see Winnipeg outpacing Canada to that extent."

The conference board projects real Canadian GDP growth in 2008 at 2.8 per cent and pegs Manitoba's growth at 3.5 per cent, second to Alberta among Canadian provinces.

Winnipeg's lofty ranking was no surprise to the city's economic tourism and promotion agency or to the Chamber of Commerce.

Stuart Duncan, president of Destination Winnipeg, said the Manitoba capital is "riding one of the better economic cycles this city has seen for a long, long time."

"We have been pointing out the real economic comeback and turnaround for Winnipeg over the past four years," Duncan said in a statement. "2007 was very strong -- probably peak of this cycle -- but 2008 should be another good year overall," he said.

Dave Angus, president of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, noted that the city's manufacturing sector has been able to adjust to the negative impact of a rising Canadian dollar better than other jurisdictions.

"We have the diversity that you need to weather some of the (economic) storms in the U.S.," Angus said, referring to the Manitoba economy as a whole.

Wilf Falk, Manitoba's chief statistician, said the conference board projections are on the high side of what has been predicted for Manitoba -- and by implication for Winnipeg -- so far this year.

Provincial GDP growth projections for Manitoba in 2008 range from 2.2 per cent (TD bank) to the conference board's 3.5 per cent. Several Canadian banks have pegged Manitoba's 2008 growth at three per cent.

Taking the average of all of the predictions so far, Manitoba's economy would grow 2.8 per cent this year compared with a Canadian growth rate of 2.4 per cent, Falk said.

"All things being equal, '08 should be a reasonably good year for us relative to other jurisdictions," he said.

Murrey gets credit for seting what stage ...

- holding Winnipeg back with the highest business taxes in the nation - businesses only create jobs and economic growth
- Waverly West -- everyone loves major sprawl??
- Voting against saving the Jets as a means to show his distain for the city's position - what a rebel.
- over seeing a continous stream of city projects which went over budget - whats money when you are loving unions
- overseeing one the the most rapid out migration periods in the city's history - very popular with the towns folk... other towns

Please enlighten me... and don't give me some crap about how he tried to take credit for projects which would have occured with or without him like Waterfront Drive, Human Right Musuem or the MTS centre... at best he was the benefactor of lucky timing. I can guarentee you Katz would have sold off Winnipeg Hydro to MB Hydro as fast as possible if it had not been done. Murray was presented with other people ideas.. and said uh-huh.

So please let me know how many of you love Waverly West.. one of the only major private investments he attracted.

please look up winnipeg's economic growth during the murray years.....compare them to the first 3 years of katz's reign.....you will find that you are talking out of your ass.

i will let you look them up privately, so as not to embarass you too much.

waverly west was the province....nice try though.

blaming murray for outmigration?...i guess you can blame him for the provincial migration patterns in saskatchewan and ontario too at that time....damn communist.

i love that you can claim what katz would have done....nice argument....murray made their office building a condition of the sale...you think dim wits would have thought of that?

all the things murray did he gets no credit for eh?....i would love for katz to steal someone else's ideas...at least have one idea before he leaves office....cancelling rapid transit doesnt count....neither does pothole filling or suburban highways and underpasses....just one idea is all i ask....maybe handing out free waterpark money to private business counts, i guess....way to govern sam.

your arguments are so weak they dont even deserve rebuttal....lucky timing?....good one.

its like you are selling a bad used car by claiming that the floor mats are really awesome.

What are you talking about?

He changed some bus shacks, which were due for an upgrade anyways.

Transit service is still the same as it ever was, he bleated about plans for improved service, and like Murray nothing has come of it yet. no gps, no "next bus coming in 5 minutes" digital signs anywhere, nothing. What planet do you live in where he has done anything for transit other than hold meetings and cancel rapid transit? Sure theres that green corridor that was gifted to the city, great, but that isn't an LRT line. I don't see Rapid Transit anywhere, which I was never in favour of personally (We NEED rail) but at least it was something, which Sam cancelled. What has Sam Katz put into mass transit? Seriously. And no, calling for privatization after not implementing any of your promises at election time is not concrete results. I actually use winnipeg transit, unlike you, so please don't make statements that are clearly ridiculous and wrong.

also there were plans for wireless in the libraries, then all of a sudden you have to pay MTS $5 a minute for wireless internet access in the PUBLIC LIBRARIES. how nice. (and a reason I will never pay a cent to MTS for anything. plus their HD sucks)

and I thought the idea of making the Kildonan Park pool an indoor pool would have been great. an indoor pool in a nature setting like Kildonan Park, but now what.

I'm unimpressed. Theres more to being a good mayor than shuffling around how taxes get collected and using smoke and mirrors to make it seem like property taxes are not going up.

I'm no Glen Murray apologist, but I give him credit for waterfront drive, and though it was probably a boondoggle, the bridge with the sals is a nice connector to st Boniface, making the exchange and main street/point douglas and st boniface areas more attractive with their connection to the forks. Plus as stupid as bus rapid transit is to a city built on the railway system and electricity, at least it was something.

In Winnipeg the real challenge is maintaining the existing infrastructure. There just isn't much left over for creating whole new classes of infrastructure (rapid transit systems, notably) that then add their own huge maintenance costs to the city budget. Also, the city is part of a globalized economy and realistically a mayor is not likely to have much impact on economic growth rates.
