Seriously, the funniest part of sammy's state of the city address was when he told a joke, and waited for applause, and none came. Finally some dude clapped. Then sammy said something like 'hey my brother's here.'

your red tape claim is a complete myth...i have no idea where you get that from.

he has raised property taxes through the back door, by reassessment...now he is hinting he will raise them again....the socialist lowered them every year.

he sure is business friendly...he hands out 7 million dollars to private business to build private waterslides....he's like a jewish santa claus.

Sadly and unbelievably there is a large segment of the Winnipeg population that actually believes Sam is doing a great job. Sadly there is a very small segment of our population who will owe Sam greatly when he re-enters private life!

Steve Juba used to say Winnipeg has a 'golden' future. After two decades in municipal politics and 3 different court hearings I think Al is due.

I don't know if there has really been one, which is odd since Portage Avenue, Eaton's and Broadway have each had their own book recently. Maybe rgalston should write "Main Street".

A great recent Winnipeg book is John Paskievich's The North End. Just photos, no text, but it's an amazing document of the life of north Winnipeg in the moment in time (mid-70s into the early 80s) where the old order of working-class Poles, Ukrainians and Jews was beginning to give way to the new disorder of "underclass" welfare types. Some of the photographs rank among the most poignant images of city life that I have ever seen anywhere. It's a very moving book but there's also a real sense of humour to it.

Spoke to a realtor today and she mentioned that the Water park - Canada Post site is a dead deal because no-one spoke to Canada Post to ask them when they were going to leave. Apparently the water park needs to be completed before the Canada Post employees are leaving. Are they for real?

I agree he isn't done cutting he has 80% to go, but he is making advancements where Murray the socialist didn't even think was possible.

The city red tape has been reduced significantly... and he isn't done. Businesses have cheered this action, stating investing in the city is much easier.

If you doubt how business friendly he is, go inquire at the WInnipeg Chamber. He is seen as a huge reason why Winnipeg's economy made such big gains. You could also go through the business thread and read the number of prositive busness stories posted.

As far as your waterslide remark... I'll take a 7 million dollar incentive to build a P3 project which will likely run 4 times that amount and serve locals and tourists while drawing people downtown ... over the 10 million dollar over budegt boondoggle bridge feasco funded by the over taxed residents. I guess he valued the fat local unions more than the city.

Winnipeg now has the 3rd fastest growing city economy for the second year running. Something you once said was impossible without Alberta's oil. Its amazing isn't it.

Once the local business tax is gone... he will be be seen as the greatest mayor Winnipeg has seen in decades.

As we stand now he has already invested more in mass transit than Murray did in his whole career. I can't believe how many Murray lovers are still left considering he was all talk and promises.. with great ideas like street parties to revive downtown.

Perhpas if Katz made more outlandish promises .. the rest of you would cling to him as you did for murray the failure.

It has crossed my mind...

That is a wonderful book. I went to the book launch for it late last year. Mr. Paskievich went through a slide presentation of a few of the photos, and recalled the location and the instance of almost every one. His anecdotes on the photo subject usually digressed into other anecdotes. He grew up in Point Douglas, I think it was on Lorne or Lisgar Streets. This kind of personal attachment and knowledge of the neighborhood was really evident in his talk at the book launch, and really evident in his photos. Any good photographer could have taken good photos of the North End 25-30 years ago: it was a very quirky time and place, in transition from vibrancy to decline, but Paskievich captures it better because he knew the neighborhood.
