As for the Bofill design of old.. well.. not that I completely hate RR Donnely, but I definitely know that I am glad we don't have 3 of them all right near each other.

Sounds like there might be a tad bit of confusion here. The absurd Bofill design was an old design for the Reschke riverfront site at 150 N. Riverside, not the Buck site at 222 W. Randolph.
As for the new plan for a single office tower at 150 N. Riverside, I'm a little disappointed as I was looking forward to some residential and hotel adding more around-the-clock activity in that area. Also I think BVictor and/or someone else mentioned that the new Destefano design for that scheme was pretty good. In his column in which the new office scheme was revealed, Roeder mentioned Reshke switched as the apartment and hotel markets are "brutal". That's simply nonsense, as both markets are quite strong - in fact, overall probably the strongest two in Chicago real estate. I think it likely came down to the fact that Reschke still overall personally has much more experience in developing (badly-designed) office towers than the other property types, and the fact that there's a decent amount of competition in downtown hotel (and to a lesser extent apartment) development at the moment, not the relative health of the respective markets. Also, he probably felt he had a half decent shot of landing one of the prospective half-dozen or so further anchor tenants that are still out there for possible tower launches over the next couple years. I'm not at all convinced he'll be successful landing a tenant, as I think his office tower-developing days are largely or completely behind him (thankfully for fans of well-designed office buildings)...
