Hehe, good point Urbanboy.

I would be happy if they changed it to be Downtown and Outbound branded instead of Arena and Sandy.

It would solidify what people already know. Downtown is in SLC not Sandy.

You"re one weird guy Urbanboy. Now we are against Sandy for having Trax stops?
And I thought we were all for Trax.

Projects,

He isn't against Sandy having trax stops but rather the trains branded with Sandy for the final location.

Once Trax is extended to Draper, they will be rebranded Draper.

Urbanboy, I hope you're excited because you'd like to see the mass transit system along the Wasatch Front expanded and not just out of spite. Keep in mind that the rail corridor UTA owns extends around the point of the mountain and into Utah Valley, so those same trains may read "Lehi" as their final destination someday.

I agree with your comments earlier FutureMayor with regard to Sandy and its attempts to have it all now as opposed to patiently waiting. My only comment in return would be that SLC has been waiting patiently and losing while Sandy is out with their marketing campaigns that are obviously working.
Even if these proposals do not come into fruitions, as most of these bloviated projects do not, at least their name is constantly out there.

Speaking with the heads of companies, especially high tech companies, they do not want to be downtown. They want to be in the south valley and Utah Valley. Just as Silicon Valley companies i.e. Adobe, Google, Ebay, etc do not want to be in downtown San Francisco.

So do I have a point? I guess my point is one that has been stated earlier that Mayor Becker must make economic development and economic redevelopment at the top of his list.

Completely and totally off the subject I noticed a project just west of the Gateway where an older building was being rehabilitated. I believe it would be on 100 South and 500 West. Any ideas on what type of facility this will be?

No, he's against it because it's in Sandy. He wouldn't cared as much if the final location was in say Murray or West Jordan. Nope in Urbanboy's mind ANYTHING that is in Sandy is a bad thing. He's just anti Sandy, bottom line. God no we can't have the city of Sandy grow. It has to stop and stay the same. It's ok for other cities to grow, but not Sandy.
Besides when UTA first build the Trax line Sandy was NEVER the Final location. This trax project is in phases. In fact Draper will not even be the Final location, there's plans for the Trax line to go into Lehi and have it go in the soon to be Grahy Project. Who knows how far south the trax line could go?
Guys, why are we so Butt hurt over Sandy? Sandy is not going to replace downtown Salt Lake. They might call them selfs the "OTHER downtown" not the "ONLY downtown." Sure they took the Stadium away from SLC. So, get over it. Salt Lake has Salt palace, ESA, Gateway, Temple Square, Main Street, Trolley Square, Highrises, LDS church headquarters, Plazas, historical buildings, soon CCC. Ect, Ect, Ect. Sandy can't take those things away. Let them have that One stadium. They just want to move up to the next level and make them self a core in their city. Sandy will NEVER be better then downtown SLC. But I believe in growth. And Sandy city as well as the other cities on the south end of the valley are growing.

I am not against Sandy or any other city wanting to grow. I do feel that it should be a natural growth.

I would really like to see South SL, Midvale/Murray, Sandy, West Valley and West Jordan each with a nice cluster of mid to high rise buildings.

This will eventually happen with the expansion of Trax and further developmend of ToDs.

These developments will not take away from SLC's status as The Downtown nor the status of SLC being the business center in the state as long as the developments happen organically.

Working recently with West Valley City they have some great concept plans about their own future "downtown." WVC has never had a center for a number of reasons, the biggest reason is that it was a collection of smaller unincorporated communities banding together. This new downtown would be centered around their new intermodal transportation center which is the endpoint for the WVC TRAX line.

I say good luck to them.

And SLCProjects, you made a great point. Sandy is not even trying to be "Downtown," they can be the OTHER Downtown. We know right where to find THE Downtown.

You beat me to it.

I was going to comment about West Valley's plans for a "City Center". Although they arn't nearly as amazing as I wish they where.

The Valley Fair Mall is supposed to be rebuilt in the next few years, but I wouldn't expect it to be all that different. Original plans called for 4 story condo towers to be built as part of the mall redevelopment but I guess they decided that would cost too much money and delay the construction too long.

The park and ride lot for the WV City Center TRAX station is already under construction but I guess TRAX construction will not start unt'll this fall and will not be completed for three years. Construction will start from the SLC/Sandy line just south of the 2100south station and work its way to WVC.

I have been wanting to post some pictures and more information about what is going on in WVC but I havn't got arround to it and like I said, there realy isn't that much actualy happening yet.

I was only kidding. remember? ( ) Apparently I don't know how to kid properly, since I was the only one laughing. Calling me names doesn't make me feel good either.

I'm just tired of the shenanigans the Legislators and Tom Dollan pulled, on Salt Lake City in order to prevent Salt Lake (Rocky's City) from getting the bid for the Real Stadium, and keep pulling by using the Stadium as leverage to get some other things which downtown had and has been working so hard to acquire.

Maybe Salt Lake should have elected Tom Dolan as mayor.
He seems to have a knack for getting what he wants.

Makid- I didn't quite understand your post so correct me if I'm wrong, there will be TRAX lines down BOTH 400 S. to 600 W. AND 700 S. to 400 W? In essence there will be multiple downtown loops?

Hey urbanboy I thought your joke was funny!

Makid, It took me a while to process it also. Luckily I had heard about all those proposals in the past and had forgot about them.

My map on the previous page details the loops.

Aye, in essence there will be 2 loops in down town. The small, between South Temple and 4th South and between Main and 6th West. Then the larger, South Temple to 7th South and Main to 4th West.

Damn, Shit, and that is whack. There are some rather interesting coversations goin on in here lately.

maybe this will spark some more pleasing conversations again....hint hint....

Holladay gives go-ahead to Cottonwood Mall renewal

HOLLADAY - City officials in this eastern Salt Lake Valley suburb gave final approval tonight to an urban-renewal plan aimed at transforming the Cottonwood Mall.
General Growth Properties Inc., the mall owner, plans to spend $550 million to turn the shuttered shopping center - only Macy's remains open during construction - into a high-end, mixed-use village. The project includes 700,000 square feet of retail space, 100,000 square feet of offices and 534 lofts, condos and single-family homes.
Tonight, the Holladay City Council, acting as the city's Redevelopment Agency Board, finalized a plan to use $96 million of new property taxes created by the development to offset infrastructure costs, such as roads, sidewalks and a rerouting of Big Cottonwood Creek.
"We've been looking forward to [creating this urban-renewal area] for a long time," said City Councilman Grant Orton, chairman of Holladay's RDA Board. "It means the continued economic viability of what used to be the mall [and] the revitalization of the whole area."
Holladay, along with other taxing entities such as the Granite School District, agreed to forfeit 75 percent of the new property taxes that will be generated by the mixed-use project for 20 years. Holladay also has pledged 75 percent of its point-of-sale tax revenues within the Cottonwood Mall urban-renewal area
during the same time period.
Kathy Olson, General Growth's senior development director, said the public funding is "absolutely critical" to remake the 1960s-era Cottonwood Mall.
"It enables General Growth to invest half-a-billion dollars in the Holladay economy, which will increase the amount of tax revenues that the city gets just exponentially," she said.
The company plans to start work this spring and complete the overhaul in October 2010.

Very excited about this project. Wow, 2010, that's a pretty aggressive timetable, we should be seeing a lot of action at that sight soon, and 534 units will make for a nice core village.

interesting blurb on Macy's restructuring: Macy's chooses Salt Lake to be one of district headquarters

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695251277,00.html

The Salt Lake City-based district will comprise 10 stores, including the five Macy's stores in Utah, as well as stores in Montana, southeast Idaho and Wyoming...

SLC's Olympic legacy continues to grow -
Facilities left from the Games are serving youth leagues and a new generation of athletes

We have our legs underneath us now," he said, noting the foundation has never asked for public subsidies, unlike Lake Placid, which receives $8 million a year from New York state. Meanwhile, the foundation has built the $75 million endowment it received from the Salt Lake Organizing Committee up to $85 million...
