I saw the urban design panel model for the hotel proposed at Cambie and Robson street. It has been substantially improved from the first design and actually looks pretty nice. It will probably be about the same height as Raffles on Robson, which is kitty corner to it. Also, it will be a Hilton Hotel. I'm not sure if that was known or not before. No photos unfortunately.

GREAT!!!

Vancouver getting a Hilton Hotel downtown!!!! Finally!

Just too bad it isn't larger or more 'Signature' and the location - too far from the Financial District.

But hey, better one than NONE!

I too like the Granville redesign.

Hopefully they could install the lights AS they redo the street (instead of waiting to re-config the streets first). It would be nice if they do a TEST BLOCK of sorts, that gets installed rather quickly so people can SEE and GET USED TO IT.

Nevertheless, this will add to the 24/7 urban feel of Granville Downtown. Definitely Bright Lights/Big City. I hope there are some more jumbotrons and neon so we'll have our own Times Square - without it being tooo cheesy (ie don't just copy Toronto).

i noticed in one of the Granville redesign renderings that they did something to the Sears wall. it looked almost like as if it were one giant LCD screen on the enitre face of the wall.

What's going to happen to all of those plaques on Granville Street honouring the B.C. Arts and Entertainment community? It was supposed to be some sort of walk like in L.A. but I don't think many people even notice it.

They'll be re-incorporated into the sidewalk.

I think the images are projected onto the (soon to disappear?) wall of Sears.

I wonder if any sort of CCTV system will be incorporated into the Granville Street redesign? Weren't there requests be the VPD to install cameras along Granville to help combat the problems with problematic club goers?

A scatter junction is when all pedestrian crossing lights go green at the same time. So you can walk diagonally across the intersection if you want to.

Like the famous intersections in Shinjuku and Shibuya in Tokyo?

Here's Shibuya... (photo credit Daniel Svard)

^ that would be ideal for Robson/Burrard and Robson/Granville. Something like a million people go through that intersection everyday, in Vancouver our busiest is Robson and Burrard with something like 60,000.

This could've probably gone into one of the transit threads but someone can move it if they'd like. I've been in contact with the city regarding the streetcar project which appeared to be stalled, here is the latest, I've had remove some of the email for personel reason but it provides some insight.

"We have hired an engineering firm to help us complete preliminary engineering and design for the Phase Zero alignment from Granville Island to Science World. We will be reporting back to Council later this year on the findings of that work which will ultimately lead to some additional next steps. There is stil a possibility we can do a 2010 Demonstration Streetcar project subject to Council approval...

There is certainly a growing demand for the Downtown Streetcar and staff are doing all we can to advance its implementation. However, we will need some senior government funding to help with the construction costs and continue to seek their assistance...

Cheers,

So looks like it's still active, I imagine the funding will be found as the total cost of Phase 0 isn't very much, I beleive even with Phase 1+2 the costs were in the $100Million range.
