snow really caused havoc for skytrain today

it was closed in new west between sapperton and columbia for a while and people could transfer to busses at braid but the busses were getting stuck

and they did single line crossings over the skytrain bridge due to weather

you'd never know it in vancouver or parts of burnaby but new west poco coq and po mo were hit really hard by the snow this morning

lets hope it snows all night now

it was weird

I left Lougheed station and it was like white out blizzard - snow covered roads

get to brentwood station and it was sunny - the lougheed was snow free - there was green grass and a sprinkling of snow

I saw at least 2 cars in the ditch along lougheed and one on the median from the train

they even closed down king george hwy in surrey for a while due to slippery conditions

omg i finally rode a 19 with the GPS and automated messages working. I started laughing when the computer behind the mic spoke - then ppl started staring at me HAHAHA. It wasn't an awkward situation at all... >< But then I thought it was really cool even though I think the voice is a little TOO computer like.

I would want the RapidBus routes to be using something closer to the 98 B-Line.

^^

I took the survey too. Said NO WAY would I pay more to get it shipped to me. They're really missing the boat on a potentially great idea though. If they offered subscriptions at the same rate or even, think about it, a DISCOUNT off the price of a regular pass, think how many people might go for it.

The discount they actually proposed, I found almost insulting. So... if I agree to a subscription of passes... I'll only pay $48 more over the year than if I just bought the pass at a 7-11? What —.

Vancouver train derails causing commuter chaos

Linda Nguyen
Canwest News Service

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

A Canadian Pacific Railway freight train derailed in Vancouver early Tuesday, adding to commuter chaos already exacerbated by a heavy snowstorm.

Three cars from a westbound grain train coming from the Prairies jumped the tracks just outside downtown Vancouver around 2 a.m. local time, spilling grain onto the tracks, said CPR spokeswoman Breanne Feigil.

Nine other cars from the train remained on the track and a conductor and an engineer on board escaped without injuries, she said.

Rail work crews worked through the night to figure out how to clean up the spilled grain.

"Crews on scene are assessing the situation and the cause is still under investigation," Feigil said. "We have an indication that two of the cars are leaking but there are no environmental issues regarding the grain."

Feigil said it was too early to speculate if the winter storm that continued to pound Vancouver was the cause of the derailment.

Meanwhile, thousands of commuters of the Westcoast Express, a commuter train that travels into the city via the suburbs, were dealing with delays.

All Westcoast Express and Via Rail trains were cancelled because of the derailment, TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said Tuesday. Translink owns the Westcoast Express commuter trains, as well as the SkyTrain light rail system.

Buses have been sent to carry the passengers who usually rely on the Westcoast Express to the Coquitlam SkyTrain station so they could continue their journey downtown.

"This derailment just added to an already burgeoning problem with the snow that had caused road conditions to be difficult to begin with," he said. "A lot of people take public transit and buses are slowly getting through."

Snider said that SkyTrains were operating at full capacity Tuesday because of the higher number of people who decided to leave the car at home because of the slippery road conditions.

He warned that commuters should take extra time and bundle up because transit through the city would be slow.

"There's going to be delays," Snider said. "People should expect to be out in the cold for a while."

It was unclear whether the tracks would be cleared for the afternoon commute, he added.

Seventy million people ride TransLink SkyTrains, buses, and Westcoast Express trains every year.

Several schools in the Vancouver area were also closed due to the weather Tuesday, as well as all public schools in West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Moody, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

Simon Fraser University, which sits above Burnaby mountain, was also been closed.

Snider said this was kind of a "good news, bad news" situation because the closure enabled TransLink to use large buses usually designated for the school students to transport passengers affected by the derailment.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology, Vancouver Community College and Douglas College were also closed.

Downtown Vancouver was hit with six centimetres of snow overnight, while some areas of the Lower Mainland got as much as 20 centimetres, according to Environment Canada.

Five more centimetres were expected to fall on the city Tuesday, turning into rain later in the day, with 15 centimetres forecast for the Fraser Valley.

A number of flights were also delayed at the Vancouver International Airport due to the poor weather conditions.

I noticed the reporter quoted an incorrect transit ridership figure of 70 million annual passengers.

I sent a quick email to Canwest News Service and cc'd it to Translink. Funny how you can find yourself with a bit more time in the middle of the day when your school is closed and your morning meeting was canceled.

Good Day,

I am writing to offer a correction for an article published on Canada.com on
Tuesday January 29th, 2008. The article 'Vancouver Train Derails Causing
Commuter Chaos' was written by Linda Nguyen of the Canwest News Service.

In paragraph fourteen Ms Nguyen wrote: "Seventy million people ride
TransLink SkyTrains, buses, and Westcoast Express trains every year." This
is incorrect.

Metro Vancouver, formerly the Greater Vancouver Regional District, publishes
detailed transit ridership statistics for Translink's public transit
services at the following website.
http://www.gvrd.bc.ca/growth/keyfacts/transit.htm

In 2006, the most recent year for which data has been publicly released, the
total number of passenger trips on all of the modes of transit was
165,073,200. This figure differs from the much higher 282,767,994 system
boardings, which counts the number of occasions passengers board each mode
of transit.

I believe it is standard practice to colloquially refer to the
formula-derived passenger trip figure as a "passenger". Therefore when the
correct passenger figure on the Metro Vancouver website is compared to the
figure quoted in the article the latter is found to be low by almost
100,000,000 annual passengers. I think you will agree that being off by
approximately 135% is a significant error. Lastly, if the system boardings
figure is applied to Ms Nguyen's 70 million annual passengers we find it is
off by more than 210,000,000, or 400%.

I hope you will consider publishing a correction and I thank you
for your time.

SKYTRAIN INCIDENT: An unidentified woman who fell into the SkyTrain tracks at Broadway Station, in what transit police are investigating as a possible suicide attempt, survived after being struck by a train yesterday at about noon. TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said emergency crews cleared the platform of commuters and recovered the woman from the track before taking her to hospital.

Just wondering, what is the reaction time for those track sensors to detect a foreign object and hault all incoming trains?

^^ They have to be manually stopped. The Expo stations have the pressure plate, while the Millenium ones use optical methods to detect track intrusions.

5 or so years ago a women jumped at Broadway and got totally mangled and stuck underneath the train screaming in pain and agony. It took them a long time to get her out(dont remember how long) and then she died. What a way to go, blasting your self with a once in a lifetime experience...literary. I didnt see this but someone I know worked for Skytrain and was there.
Fun stuff.
^There are track sensor which shut of power to the track when something fall in there which effects the old and new trains. There also is a manual shut off button...seen that pressed once when these two drunk out of town hicks decided to start walking across the tracks while a train was approaching. They would of probably triggered the sensor in time to stop the train but it was kind of close because they were entering the other track right when the train was pulling in so they could of still been hit by it before it managed to stop. The transit guy ran full speed to shut it off manually.
Another fun tid bit, when I was younger we would hop between the mk1 cars and ride between the stations late at night, once even over the skybridge
