You can't be serious. There is no way Minneapolis is near the level of Atlanta on a global level. Just look at the Global Rankings for one.

What global rankings?

Exports of goods from major U.S. metropolitan areas:

Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI
$17,601,865,811

Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA
$11,393,644,682

Now let's be fair GA also has the shipping port in Savannah and Delta has the most flights in and out of SAV than any other carrier.

The Minneapolis metro area has 32 Fortune 1000, including 19 Fortune 500 companies. There are 26 Fortune 1000 companies in Georgia.
If you want to compair apples to apples then we have to compair state to state. If you really want to go state to state then just be ready to read a string of posts on all that GA has over MN.

I didn't make the numbers up. You can find them here:
http://ita.doc.gov/td/industry/otea/metro/Reports/2006/mv_value06.html

Take it up with them.

Well, if you want to compare Fortune 1000 state to state

GA - 26 Fortune 1000, including 15 Fortune 500 companies.
MN - 34 Fortune 1000, including 20 Fortune 500 companies.

End of story.

Okay In case you haven't noticed dude, the thread is currently about a Delta - NWA merger and where the headquarters will be. Everyone has put their two cents in, including myself. Sorry if you don't like it.

^ That's fine. I'm really not here to start a pi$$ing contest. I just wanted to read different perspective and point out a few things some of you may not know.

So how much press coverage is this potential merger getting in Atlanta? I've read a few articles in the AJC, but are your local news stations covering it? There hasn't been much news about it up here. The Minneapolis Star Tribune has had a couple articles as has the St. Paul Pioneer Press, but it's been all about the politicians and what they have had to say. They haven't really covered the effects of such a merger. The the local news stations haven't covered it much at all.

What are you still arguing this point for? It's been clearly established that Atlanta has more Fortune 500 company headquarters than Minneapolis does. You can't lose your argument and then say, "big deal" and then move onto state statistics.

I would welcome a global poll to see which city has more name recognition, Atlanta or Minneapolis. Hosting the Olympics really put Atlanta on the global map, as does having the #1 airport in the world with the number of non-stop flights to cites around the globe that we do. Having world famous companies headquartered in Atlant (such as Coke, CNN and UPS) helps too. Atlanta's gross metroploitan product is larger than Minneapolis'.

Oh there is news leaking about the merger. Will you see it in the AJC... probably not until the announcement.

Well here we have the 2004 numbers...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_metropolitan_product

Atlanta = $198.1 Billion

Minneapolis = $145.8 Billion

So Atlanta's is a little over 50 billion larger

Here's another interesting report

No, this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_city#GaWC_Inventory_of_World_Cities.2C_1999

I guess I was wrong. Minneapolis is on the same level as Atlanta.

You were referring to city proper whereas I was referring to the metropolitan areas. To talk about city proper is pretty much insignificant being most associate a metropolitan area with its central city or cities (i.e. Minneapolis and St. Paul). Even corporations associate with the central city. For example, most would say Best Buy is based out of Minneapolis, not Richfield (a suburb of Minneapolis). For this reason, I used metropolitan numbers over city proper.

I wouldn't argue that the Olympics put Atlanta on the map, but Atlanta is not known like NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, and D.C.

My whole point was that Minneapolis isn't some push over and don't be surprised if the headquarters ends up here.

Those numbers aren't surprising at all. They damn near fall in to the same order as metropolitan population rankings

If there is a merger between Delta and NW the HQ will be in Atl due to the makeup of the two companies. It really has nothing to do with how major Minneapolis is or isn't.

I answered this very question several posts above with a whole list. Atlanta is number 3 in the country for Fortune 500's. I'm not sure where you're getting that 19 number from either.

Atlanta definitely has a larger global presence than Minneapolis.

1. The fact that Atlanta is twice Minneapolis' size is one reason. Yes, population does matter. The more people that reside in your city, the more well known it is world wide. Of course there are small cities that are well known, but generally population is a good indication.

2. the number of brand names associated with Atlanta is has a far greater global presence. Delta, CNN, Coke, UPS, and Home Depot are some of the most well known companies in America. CNN and Delta are very well known around the world. And Coca Cola is the world's most well known brand.

3. Atlanta's airport has a major impact.

4. Even in literature "Gone with the Wind" is one of the most widely sold books ever.

5. Martin L. King, Jr. and the city's civil rights history is world knowledge.

6. the olympics, obviously.

7. even the Atlanta Braves as a brand is probably more well-known than any Minneapolis team.

8. Atlanta has well over twice the number of foreign consulates and/or embassies than Minneapolis

Atlanta is not New York, LA, or Chicago and no one here is saying it is more well known than those cities. Nor is it "better" or "worse" of a city than Minneapolis. But objectively, Atlanta is known a lot more around the world than Minneapolis.

That being said, I don't think that's enough to necessarily guarantee the HQ would stay here in a Delta/NW merger. Although I think I just made a good case.

In all fairness I did warn you this was going to happen. Let's call a cease fire and move on to topics that directly involve the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

We get it you love MSP and we love ATL. There is plenty that can be said of both areas, cities, or states that would make people go ooooooooohhhhhh aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh.

However, if we keep this up I know from personal experience that Mahem is going to show up wipe all the off topic post and then send out nasty-grams. He will pull this car over.

I wish everyone a great day and Unity77 take a deep breath and count to 10 before blasting off.

For heaven's sakes, yes, let's move on! It sounds like Atlanta and Minneapolis ought to be seeking out ways to partner and to mutually enhance one another rather than tearing each other down. They're both amazing cities who bring a lot to the table. What a true global powerhouse when they put themselves together!!!

To all Minnesotans, Welcome South, Brother! We've got a lot to learn from you, and be sure to let us know whatever we can do to help you.
