It's not visible parking, it's crappy visible parking in a huge podium. Vetro is good, but it would look better, IMO, if the parking was clad the same as the rest of the tower (like 600 N Fairbanks), instead of a blank wall.
That's my only complaint, and it's not a big one.

This has turned out quite nicely. I really appreciate the unique touches, such as the multi-colored glass (which hasn't been done here this visibly since Jahn in the 1980s - look for Aqua and OMP to have some of the same qualities when finished). Also, no painted concrete.

I don't know... that cap up top that uses the same material as the base creates a really cool effect.

hey... by any chance, do any of you well connected guys out there have a way to get me a survey of this area: the four downtown blocks from jackson to congress, and from state to michigan?

i'm going to city hall tomorrow to get a sanborn map of the loop, but i really need a site survey or at the very least details about that lot across from cna on van buren and wabash. any help??

Speaking of which, does anyone know with authority what that material is? I haven't been able to inspect it up close yet, but it appears to be some kind of fiberglass?

Vetro looks great! But the renderings show diagonal cross bracing along the corners of the building. I don't see them in this picture. Was this left out?

^ Yes, you guessed it, this feature was eliminated.

It was not cross bracing, but tension members that were supporting rather large cantilevers off the front of the structure. Instead, they dropped two columns down to the sidewalk on that part of the building. You can't see them in the photos.

I like the way they've broken the visual mass on Vetro by using a different tint of glass on every forth floor - this is similar to, but much better & more honest than, the tiresome SCB signature white grid (Sky 55 etal).

Site near Merchandise Mart sells for $11.8 million

A Texas developer has paid $11.8 million for a property just east of the Merchandise Mart where it plans to build a 32-story apartment tower. San Antonio-based Lynd Co. bought the parcel at 161 W. Kinzie St. on Dec. 20 from Chicago-based developer Sterling Bay Cos., according to documents filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds. It would be the first Chicago project for Lynd, which wants to build a high-rise with 263 apartments, 25,000 square feet of retail space and 213 parking spots. Chicago-based architecture firm Valerio Dewalt Train Associates designed the building, which was approved by the Chicago Plan Commission in October.

You know, I look at that 2012 skyline and my mind tells me something is really wrong...

As it turns out, it's the highway. By the time skylines get that great, the cars should be flying. It really looks like something out of a movie set.
