I hear you TimeSL. Just a reminder, we will have the new courts, building (which will be very well done/cool architecture) with a new plaza and scaping on the ne corner of 4th and w. temple. And, we will hopefully have a new Broadway Theater (if sl beats sandy to the race) just a couple blocks to the north. Just think of how much more attractive downtown SL will be!

Are you actually saying you like the design of the new federal court house expansion?



Despite my opinion of the new court house which I think is ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS, I don't see how it will be anything like TimeSL has in mind. The court house will not be a gathering place or something to define SLC by, It will be very federal in nature and not a friendly place to hang out. As I have mentioned before I think it will actually lessen the overall character of the block substantially more than it will help that block. Port O' Call is on that block and will be demolished for the new court house, while it is a bar, it is definitely more of a gathering place than the new court house will be, not to mention the loss of early 20th century architecture for the above PIECE OF $$$T!

And on the parking lot subject, Earl Holdings is a greedy BASTARD! I blame him for not having the RSL stadium downtown.

Got to agree with you on that design Mr. Mayor, that 'thing' is just like most other federal bldg's in other cities, plane ugly. But, that is butt ugly, hopefully they'll come up with fits a little better, 5 story bar is good

There is an actual tower, with pretty much the exact same skin, which has been completed lately in another city. It was posted a while ago on a few pages back. Anyway, the skin was not at all unattractive. There are also other renderings of this building, which make it far more appealing. The point being, I'm wondering how much of the fault lies with this ugly conceptual rendering itself. Still, my main disdain for the building is that it's replacing a great historical structure, which should not be demolished.

I know the courthouse looks a bit imposing, and I agree that the aesthetics look a bit harsh. I know the model looks really harsh, and I would like to inquire about why there was such a change in aesthetics from the previous versions. I also agree that is is unfortunate that the Port O'call buildings will be demolished. However, I've been following this for a while, and I have a lot of confidence/hope in the architect. I thought his previous versions were much better, but I think the actual building and plaza will turnout to be very surprisingly well done. check out the architect's website ( www.tphifer.com ). They will probably tweak the design from that model. I believe they probably have received feedback like yours and they will probably make adjustments. I will try to find the previous versions.

Granite board OKs 3 more projects

I missed the whole tv news story, but at a press conference yesterday Becker again mentioned the "Broadway Style Theater," the Utah Theater, and a "cultural district" for the area between 100 South and 200 South.

I agree Orland, this design is much better than the old picture that I posted, I would be much happier to see this buidling on that block as well. I think my biggest beef with the whole thing is that for some crazy reason they feel that they need to clear the entire block of any other structure just to put this building in. It looks as if from the original rendering to the rendering on the link that they have changed the shape from a cube to more of a rectangle, looks like it will be longer from north to south, maybe they narrowed it in order to accomidate the Shubrick. If you notice in the rendering that behind the building, what would be the west, there is a small two or three story building shaped almost exactly like the Shubrick Building, maybe they pulled their federal heads out of their federal @$$es and realized that maybe they don't need to demolish an the remainder of the block to build on half the block. Here's to hoping that is the case.

I would have no problems with the new design and the overall expansion if they were to keep the Shubrick.

Thanks for the link Orlando, ( www.tphifer.com ) I am very impressed with their work. The SLC Courthouse, colored renderings toward the end of that specific slidshow, gives you a little better feel for the building. It would seem like this could actually be a stunning piece of architecture when completed.

Is that pdf the old or the new rendering? Because I agree that that rendering is much better than the one's on the architects website and would allow the preservation of the Shubrick building. If it turned out like that then I would have no problem with this project, in fact I would like it very much, as it is also preserving the oddfellows building.

Speaking of which, wasn't someone on this forum working for a firm that is involved in the relocation of the Oddfellows? It would be nice to hear an update on when the building will roll across the street.

Also, I thought the change in those plans was due to new set-back requirements for government buildings due to bomb threats and "terrorism." Furthermore, I think there was concern of Port O' Call being too close to the government facility, since it brews terrorism and suicide bombers.

That is true, I remember hearing the same thing about Port O' Call being too close. But since when does Salt Lake get terrorism and suicide bombers? This isn't the middle east. But however since 9-11 and the Oklahoma city booming I guess we can't be too careful.
I fear that the link that Orlando posted is the OLD rendering. I believe we are stuck with the Big ugly Borg Cube building.

Urban boy is correct. This was the second version out of three. The third being the borg-like cube that we are most familiar with. However, both of these versions wer done by the same architect. Frankly, I prefer, the long version because the design seems really clean and innovative and light-filled. They must have added some program/space to the original that made it larger, and, therefore, created conflict with the Shubrick buildings. The setback thing because of 9/11 is true also. I hope they tweak the cube to not appear so imposing, and harsh. Whatever happens, we know that the architect is capable of designing something very nice. In addition, this will most likely be his most important project to date, and his big chance to really get noticed.

My company was awarded the earthwork on this project. Some demolition is happening on the surrounding site right now. The building move will be happening soon. I'll pass on the details when I get them.

An interesting tidbit. Just putting the building on rollers, rotating it, and moving it across the street was in the range of 14 million. The buildings value doesn’t come close to that. But it will be cool to watch oddfellows move.
