The Business Chronicle mentions that —'s Sporting Goods and Barnes & Noble are considering Semblers 14th street project for a store.

It would be cool if they opened a large B&N on the ground floor of the BB&T tower, fronting 17th Street. I can see 17th becoming quite an interesting boulevard once the south side gets built up a little.

Agreed.
There isn't much pedestrian activity on 17th between Market and State.
And crossing is scary, those crosswalks are not timed properly.

I don't think there's much retail planned for the BB&T base facing 17th Street. The A.S. planners really don't seem to have envisioned 17th Street acting as much more than a higher-speed entrance arterial. It would have been nice to see it function as more of a boulevard, but it doesn't seem likely.

The buidings all seem to be planned with enormous lobbies on 17th, making it feel more like the intersection of 14th and Peachtree, with many lobbies and little retail. Luckily, just as Midtown buildings are reconfiguring their lobbies for retail, I suppose this is always possible along 17th Street in the future as well.

Does anyone think there is a possibility of retail being included on the back side of BB&t building and also the backside of the future highrise inbetween BB&T and Twelve? Also, I agree about crossing 17th at state street. Especially at night, the crosswalks are dark and need to be lit up somehow. Any ideas and does anyone know who I could contact other than Atlantic Station management. Have not had much luck with them.

^ Though for pedestrian purists this approach would be heresy, but I don't see why they didn't build underground pedestrian crosses across 17th St.

If you ever do talk to AS Management, tell them Atlantic Drive [at 16th] is still waiting it's street sign. [it's been about 2 years now].

Technically there are, through the parking deck.

Ah yes.
That is quite romantic.

I was wondering about that, so there are stairs on either side of 17th St. that connect to the parking deck allowing a straight shot across on the deck?

Basically, yes. There are stairs on the south side of 17th and the south side of 17 1/2 Street, so you can do it. I've done it plenty of times in the rain on my way to catch the shuttle on 17th.

I personally don't see what all the fuss is about. 17th Street doesn't feel any less safe to cross than many equally wide streets in other cities - North Michigan in Chicago comes to mind.

^ I would think the main issues would be turn lanes on the intersecting streets to 17th St. Crossing a wide street isn't a problem when cars don't assume they have the right of way when they get the turn arrow to go. But when people have to not only wait for 17th St traffic to stop, they then have to wait for cars turning left.

...at least that is what I remembered, there are a few similar streets around here that have the wide lanes & turn lanes. Turn lanes cut the time to cross the street in half a lot of times.

That's probably what'll happen. If I'm not mistaken the 18th street side of 201 17th can take retail which will be interesting to see with the way its completely open.

that touches on the biggest mystery of AS. no B&N or Borders. for an outdoor mall (or whatever the heck it's called) of its size, that's insane.

honestly, i would rather see a B&N around 12th and Midtown to help jumpstart the MM.

I could not tell from the photos, but is the parking ramp for the building on 17 1/2 street, or is it more centrally located in the building? That could hinder any retail efforts depending on the design.

I think only chain stores can work at AS. The type of people that shop in small independent boutiques tend to avoid AS.

You might be right.

Just wait till H&M opens in the spring. It will be like IKEA all over again, and should really (hopefully) shake things up over there.

Maybe it would have helped if there was something across from Knitch. I am so tired of that big whole behind Dillards.

Knitch wasn't that great anyway. Just a bunch of overpriced — you could find somewhere around the 5 points/Ga. State/underground area for cheap. When is H&M going to open? If I was the owner, I would have waited untill H&M opened. You know there are going to be TONS of people there all summer. Then, if sales still sucked afterwards, I would close.
