Last I read (and it was here via Crains) was that the athletic club was going to be closed a few months ago. As far as ideas if deck over the streets to make a true plaza you could have a plethora of pedestrian space and alfresco options from Trump all the way to Nordstroms and Michigan/Wabah. Nordstoms present a large ugly edifice but maybe that could be worked around. It has the potential to be a truly amazing space that is lacking in the city and give what more people were looking for in B37.

WOW here we go again.....i can already tell that the Clare wil essentially be blending in just like everything else surrounding it! Are you kidding me with that paint test???? Theres no reason to test the color when they all look the same !!! This should be the easy part they already have it down JUST LOOK TO YOUR LEFT THEN YOUR RIGHT-----THEN NORTH THEN SOUTH! no testing needed!!!!!!!!!!!! OH this just makes me go bizerk! such a waste of constant potential

I sadly agree about the paintjobs. I wish they were a bit bolder sometimes. Look at the presence of the CNA building! It makes an otherwise nice modern building really stand-out and handsome.

Winter doesn't hinder bustling building scene

Forget hibernation. Even though the coming months will be cold, the architecture scene in Chicago should be as hot as ever.

Expect a bruising debate over the Chicago Children's Museum's plan to move to Grant Park from Navy Pier and another fight over the proposal to plop a glassy addition atop the Chicago Athletic Association building across from Millennium Park.

There will be new buildings by Helmut Jahn, Ralph Johnson, Carol Ross Barney and Laurence Booth. And we'll get a better sense of whether Santiago Calatrava's twisting, 2,000-foot Chicago Spire is going to be built or whether it's nothing more than a sky-high fantasy...

Well, I have to say that I go to this Dominick's all the time, and it is usually BUSY AS HELL! Im not sure the loss of this store would be a good thing. And AJ's across the street makes some damn fine gyro burgers, even at 3:00 AM!!
On the other hand, the Chicago Lodge Motel in the first picture could go to hell. It looks like a former route 66, 1950's remnant. Let get rid of that shithole first, and make Edgewater a better place! Its further east, and would make a fine candidate for a new highrise!

^ I staid at the Chicago Lodge around this past New Years, and it was, without a doubt, the shittiest motel/hotel I've ever staid in. Kind of charming. With that being said, it was also pretty cheap, and it probably sees the most use from concert-goers of the aragon and the riv (metro, too, i guess). Where will they stay if its gone???

Well I saw something preliminary for this site a while back and one of the possibilities is to build a new Dominick's plus one or two towers with additional retail.

There may not be much on this month's agenda, but I think that the Chinatown hotel is an important development that makes this month's agenda at least somewhat eventful. While it is only 15 stories, that does give Chinatown some height - which it is currently lacking...and more importantly, I think that the hotel is an important step towards the development of and the increasing of vibrancy in the Chinatown neighborhood.

Chinatown is doing ok and has seen lots of dense infill, so I would tweak your wording and say that the hotel is important in integrating the dense and vibrant Chinatown into some sort of continuity with the surrounding neighborhoods; right now, it's sort of isolated by desolation. Cermak from the Rock Island viaduct to McCormick Place needs some revivification, stat. This hotel and the Lexington Park tower are a good start.

Business is really concentrated downtown, and hotels want to be located near offices, convention centers, etc. The only neighborhood you find hotels in outside of downtown/south loop is along I90 by O'hare, by those office towers. otherwise, there is little reason to open a major hotel in the neighborhoods, although you can find boutique hotels on the north side if you looked. There is also a planned Hyatt (or Hilton?) on Clark right by Wrigley that in planned to go up... that should be pretty interesting.

Hyde Park and Lincoln Park/Lakeview also have some hotel capacity, on account of the employment concentrations associated with their respective universities and hospitals.

Two Major Apartments Break Ground in Chicago

Construction has begun on two apartment towers 37 stories and 41 stories and a 1-acre park in the K Station residential development in Chicago’s Fulton River District.

Located at North Clinton and West Kinzie, the towers are the third and fourth buildings being developed within the $750 million, 2,400-unit K Station. The first was Left Bank at K Station, and the second was 353 N. Des Plaines St.

The two buildings have green elements, which are increasingly popular with the upscale rental market. Designs incorporate green roofs with native landscaping, efficient building operating systems, recycled materials and energy efficient building materials.

Construction has also started on the 1-acre The Park at K Station across Jefferson Street from the two towers. This public space will include an amphitheater with a sail pavilion for live performances, walking paths, a family play area, dog-friendly area and seating areas. It is slated for completion in spring 2008.
