Sacramento Restaurants, Nightlife and Entertainment

After attempting to post a review of the Old Sac fireworks earlier and having Safari crash on me, I thought I'd try one...last...time! :-P

So, my husband, best friend, and I went to Old Sac last night and we actually had a good time. It was crowded...but, not too crowded. There were some interesting folks down there last night and someone invited a lot of homeless people who were wearing 2008 hats and stuff and it was kindof weird. There were firedancers and live music and food along Front Street. All the clubs/bars were packed with lines out the door on almost every one. The mood was festive, the police were everywhere (we have some HOT policemen in Sacramento!), and the hoochies were out in force. I swear I saw the biggest boobs EVER and a girl with an ass that stuck out so far it celebrated New Years with Denver! I had no idea Tunel 21 was now a ghetto, hoochie bar! That was interesting.

Anyway, we left Old Sac at about 11:30 to avoid the inevitable traffic and went over to 2nd and R by the pedestrian bridge and rang in the New Year there. The fireworks were good. I'd give them about a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I liked the effect of using the Tower Bridge and having fireworks come from there also.

All in all, it was a good New Years and I was happy to be in the central city for this one. People were everywhere, clubs all over were packed, and it seemed everyone was having a great time! Here's some pics from my iPhone (not the best quality) of some of the night.

It looked like the Zig was made of lights! Someday, maybe, they'll make Rob's dream a reality and incorporate it into the New Years Celebration!

I spent New Year's Eve downtown at a friend's loft. We saw a lot of traffic heading for Old Sac but didn't venture that way. My wife took light rail to the party and reported that light rail was very full of families heading for Old Sacramento. It was also nice to see Light Rail running extra late (and extra full) on our way home: we really need late-night post-club public transit, and an all-night "owl" service too! We didn't even try facing J Street on the way home, but saw evidence of public revelry anywhere near a bar.

I'm not surprised by the presence of street folks in Old Sac: being on the street means you hear a lot of talk, and where there's a big outdoor party there's an opportunity for free food and beer.

I see that the street around the Clarendon was pretty vacant, but the idea of empty parking spaces in Old Sac on a party night is downright mind-boggling: I can only assume that they had the street blocked off to prevent vehicular traffic? Was anything open or happening down that way to attract people? It looks like there are folks off in the distance past the Firehouse, but there isn't much reason to wander that way if everything on that chunk of the street was closed. From the photo, it looks like all the action was on Front Street.

Why do women with huge boobs turn a bar into a "ghetto, hoochie" place? Many might consider women with huge boobs to be a big selling point.

It is not the huge boobs or asses that make a place ghetto or hoochie. Rather, it is the tightness and skimpiness of their clothing that makes it such. Also, when I can almost see all 3 of their "woman parts" walking down the street, I think it's hoochie! Ghetto may be the wrong word for it. But, the music they were playing I would have to describe as ghetto. Personally, I don't like that music. But, to each their own! I just don't want to see all your parts. Mine weren't out on display for everyone to see! I also had a picture of a girl with a skirt so short and pulled up to her stomach that her panties were FULLY showing. But, she was moving around too much and I was trying to be too sly about taking the picture for her to be seen. A good time was had by all.

There wasn't any people down by the Clarendon because there was nothing down there. The bars further down on 2nd street had VERY long lines and all the restaurants in Old Sac and most of the stores were open. It was fun. Although, there was this weird set of shops toward the South end of Front St that we went into that took you into this indoor hallway with painted brick and painted doors. It was so gawdy I almost puked! There was a leather store, a tobacco store, and an interesting knick knack store. But, it was pretty sad what they had done to this obviously historic building inside. All in all, there was about 6 or 7 stores tucked away inside this hallway and I wasn't interested in any of them (except maybe the knick knack store).

It was a fun night. But, my husband was all cranky about the crowds and I was getting tired. So, we left and at least got to see more hot policemen on the way out!

I am very intrigued by those Clarendon Apts, though. Does anyone know anything about them? My best friend absolutely adored them and wanted to live there. They're too small for my husband and I and our 2 little dogs!

An old friend of mine lived in the Clarendon. They are studio apartments, there is no parking space included so parking is a problem. Dogs would probably be out of the question. They're nice, and it's definitely a unique place to live, but not without its challenges. Now that the Mechanics Exchange "iLofts" are open, there are residences at both ends of Old Sacramento--soon to be joined by the rebuilt Orleans Hotel on Second Street. And now that Light Rail ends at the train station, instead of the nearest stop being Seventh Street, it's quite a bit more transit-friendly.

As to woman parts, heck, that pretty much sounds par for the course for nightclub apparel, and considerably more than at some of the nightclubs I used to attend! Different strokes for different folks, I guess. This time of year I'd worry more about the poor girls catching a cold or coming down with hypothermia!

I have been inside those buildings (with the tobacconist etc.), a lot of the gaudy paintjobs are the relics of the seventies, when the idea with a "historic district" was to make it as colorful as possible. A lot of those buildings were extensively rebuilt to turn them into retail shops, and at the time such things were fashionable.

Painted brick is historically authentic for the period: in the 1860s/70s, brick was considered an ugly building material, and building owners would generally paint it. This was originally a requirement for Old Sacramento buildings, but one that has been allowed to slide over time, but many of the brick buildings still have the paint, especially on the inside.

If you think I'm going to take a picture of some hoochie girl with some ghetto thug looking guys waiting in line to get in a club, you are crazy!! Actually, I almost got physically ill looking for other pictures. Too much porn in the results. Anyway, they were wearing skin tight cotton dresses that stopped JUST below their nastiness and showed WAY too much cleavage. You could literally see the cellulite on their ass through the dress!

I just found the best dive bar within an easy walk of my house. I've lived in midtown for over three years, but never bothered to check out the Old Tavern. Mostly because as far as neighborhood dive bars go, I live virtually across the street from the Round Corner. So that has always satisfied my need for a quick drink in levis and a tshirt. but now, I'll be walking the extra five minutes to the Old Tavern. For my money, it beats the Round Corner by a midtown mile. THere were actually 5 or 6 decent looking girls there on a Wednesday night. Round Corner would typically have zero. And there's $1.50 pints of PBR, so that's nice. And the sign behind the bar advertized a shot of whiskey in your coffee for $0.25. I didn't go that rout tonight, but it's nice to know the options available to me on Sunday mornings...

I stumbled on an outstanding Thai place in Old Sac of all places. Indo Cafe on Front Street. The few times I've eaten there for lunch the food was always excellent. Who would have thought? The Curry Prawns were probably the best that I've ever had. If you work on Capitol Mall, it's def. worth the walk for a great lunch.
