They look like visions or studies, but not actual projects. I bet they don't get any further than digital renderings.

Fucking hell those are ugly. Spire is nice but none of those things belong in LA.

Those look too visionary anyway.

cole, I think you're right about that... just visions and studies.

Threhundred, I think that Spire is nice but I don't like the setback and having those huge columns is prety nasty... not a good look.

Even though funding for that proj has been slower & tougher than getting money for a new condo tower, or hotel, or office bldg, the fact remains that at least the special use nature of a govt bldg won't compete with other projs for customers or buyers. That's why the holdup in getting $$ for the new courthouse has been so frustrating.

I don't think the architect's office is a hoax as much as it appears to be a case of a designer----in this case, Robertson & Partners----who's trying to wear a second hat as a devlpr.

I've been skeptical about the City House/Olympic towers proposal from the beginning since it seemed to be more of a design or idea promoted by an architect instead of a workable condo concept guided by a devlpr. However, alot of devlprs also have been notorious for not getting their proposals beyond the point of hype & talk. One example being the sponsor of the Glass tower proj. Still, if full time devlprs can become easily sidetracked, then architects don't have a prayer.

Based on the pics posted by LAMG, City House/Olympic have gone from 2 bldgs side by side to 1 bldg surrounded by a lowrise. I notice Robertson's web page now says this about one of the 2 towers:

Why do you have the first project listed as a proposed St. Regis and the second as a proposal for the site at 8th and Hope?

Because that is the name that Roberson Partners named the images. If you right click on the picture and see the properties... you can see the name.

Not that it's already not obvious but if you were to compare the name of the first image, "The St. Regis," with the name on the website "Five Star Hotel and Residences" then its easy to see that it's supposed to be a St. Regis. Then again this is a pie in the sky vision like the recycled versions they have all over the place.

I hate making any kind of fuss over projs that won't see the light of day, as probably will true of City House/Olympic----at least before most of us are old & gray. But whenever I'm in the hood, as I was a few days ago, the thing that always hits me first & foremost is there still are alot of spaces that need to be filled in & fixed up. That's why I can't complain about new projs being too short, or too fugly, or too this or too that, unless they're super bad, super fugly.

As far as I'm concerned, Robertson's tower doesn't qualify as either super bad or really fugly. It's fugly only if you hate traditional design. By that standard, you can also complain about bldgs like the Biltmore hotel. Or more particularly, you can be unhappy about the neo classical office tower that was added to the Biltmore, on the SE corner of 5th & Grand, back in the 1980s. Or the neo classical designed tower that was built for Home Savings, also back in the 1980s (?) at the NE corner of 7th & Fig.

BTW, I noticed the wall around the site of LA Central has been----& remains----entirely removed on the side facing 11th St. No one has figured out why the devlpr even bothered to put up the wall in the first place, certainly since it's now going on several wks without any actual construction taking place. And the auto show, & its need for additional parking spaces, came & went some time ago.

I also noticed quite a few ppl sitting around the outdoor tables, after 8:00 pm, of the Pinkberry on 2nd St in Little Tokyo. If anyone knows about that location, then they'll understand why it's a nice step up to see some life in that part of the hood.

What's happened to Charlie O's? There's police caution tape over their front entrance. A friend of mine told me that Charlie O's was closed at the last artwalk, which I thought was unusual; until I saw today that he was right.

they'd probably end up in houston or some other cheap southern state in which they could purchase a huge shitty home with a huge plot of land like all those movies depicting american living they've seen. they're just not sophisticated enough to understand the appeal of smaller, more urban living, because china itself is already crammed to the bones and i think the idea of "urban sophisticat" doesn't fully register in outside of hong-kongese china.

and i can't imagine (get it?) the imaginasian theater garnering much patronage in the long run for some reason. just don't see a huge following for asian-only cinema. but i could be wrong.

I'm a fan of Japanese horror movies. Horror movies in general. People think that Hostel and the Saw movies were bad, but watch Audition and Old Boy. That'll put hair on your ass.

Although nothing AND I MEAN NOTHING could compare to swap.avi (google it). I'm not even going to describe it.

Actually, the spot at 8th and Hope that this "vision" is located would be a viable spot for a skyscraper. They've located the tower on the NE corner of 8th and Hope (which is currently a 4 or 5 story parking garage with no retail), and the low-rise portion extends to the NW corner of 8th and Grand, which is currently a surface parking lot. Out of all of these outlandish "proposals", this is the one that I'd actually like to see built. It's placement would do wonders for the skyline, so long as the materials were top notch.

On another note, someone should post friday's construction shot of the Ritz in the Ritz thread in the Highrise Construction forum. We need to bump that thread.
