their original building had copper eaves, which turned a really neat patina green. It was a good look, but now they skip the patina part, and go right to the green.

You missed my point. The money and the power allow both Dr. Bronner & Mr. Trump to make their buildings look EXACTLY the way they want. Dr. Bronner happens to have a fetish for the color green.

by the way....for those of you who don't want to see the judicial building and dexter avenue completely destroyed by Bronner's next turquoise topped monster, we are working up a public meeting. i'll know more soon.

for anyone interested we are holding a public meeting Tuesday January 8th at 5:30. It will be held at the Landmarks auditorium. Please come. We are inviting RSA, the city, and numerous people who are interested in what's going on

Historic Site Saved
By David G. Bronner

Construction has begun on the historic Supreme Court Building on Dexter Avenue in front of the State Capitol. The building has been vacant for 15 years since the
courts moved across the street to its new facility. There were virtually dozens of ideas tried and tested over the years to preserve the site and at the same time make it useful. But most every idea stumbled on how to make the small 1926 structure viable within reasonable cost objectives. Finally, the RSA was able to come up with an equitable solution. Although it is cheaper to demolish the 50,000 square foot antique than renovate it, the cost of renovating can be absorbed hroughout the entire project. The finished structure will be a $200 million, 12-story, 500,000 square foot office building. Without the additions, it would not be feasible to save the building due to asbestos, ADA requirements, no parking, etc. The renovations will move the entrance from the second floor to street level (similar to Surrogate’s Court, formerly The Hall of Records in NYC). The south façade will be celebrated through a glass wall that will expose the building, as it always has, to Dexter Avenue. Everything will stay the same, as the new structure will be built above the old building as well as behind it. A unique feature of the new building will be a park. Located between the building and the Alabama Bar Association building, this park will honor past members of the Supreme Court that
presided in the building. Additionally, the historic Supreme Court Chamber will remain as it was, but will be used as the main amenity of the building as a first class conference center for the tenants.

New AG, Homeland Security offices in works

MONTGOMERY - A $20 million renovation of the state's old Public Safety Building is scheduled for completion this summer, when it will become home to the state attorney general's office and the state Department of Homeland Security.

Jeff Samuel, special projects coordinator for the state Finance Department, said the work that began in February 2007 should be finished by July 16.

The building is across the street from the Capitol and fronts on Montgomery's main street, Dexter Avenue. It was built in the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration project. It housed the Department of Public Safety until the department moved to the state's Criminal Justice Center in 2004.

Samuel said the renovation retained the building's brass doors, brass trim in the elevators, and large state seal on the lobby floor.

"It is really going to be a beautiful, retro-looking building inside because it will be the original brass work in there," he said.

The renovation of the building has included the addition of two wings for more office space. The attorney general's office, now located in the Statehouse, will occupy about two-thirds of the 117,000-square-foot building. The Department of Homeland Security, now in a downtown office building, will take up 5,300 square feet.

Once the attorney general's office moves out of the Statehouse, that will provide more space for the Legislature, which occupies about half of the building.

I think it's been discussed, but One Court Square needs to be the site of Montgomery's new tallest.

No, Montgomery's next tallest (and it will be a long time coming, if ever), needs to be at the site of the Madison hotel, next to the RSA Tower.

Better for One Court Square (if not the Legislature) would be to use that block for an Arena. Something brick about 4 or five stories high should do just fine.
