I would love it if Edmonton was the next destination for Emirates, but I am sure it will be Vancouver.

Emirates's next Canadian destination will be Calgary. They mentioned it in a press release.
But they will go daily to YYZ first before entering Western Canada. And the current bi-laterals doesn't allow any more additional flights and no negotiations will take place before late 2008 or early 2009. Don't know what will Calgary's market be by that time (growth has already slowed down). They might consider Montreal or Vancouver first if they have to wait till like 2009 or 2010.

^you have to think YVR before YYC...there is a huge amount of investment looking at vancouver, the port there of, and other misc. developments. While YYC does make #3/4 sense, it doesnt make #2 imo.

I actually think YYC is the best option for them over YVR.

Yes! Plus they have just as good of connections within Canada as YVR.

BUT (1) the Olympics are in Vancouver - and there will be legacy growth from that event well into the future (2) Vancouver is positioning itself to be much more competitive with Seattle and Calgary - an awakening giant so to speak (3) YVR will always be way a head of YYC as an international HUB. Calgary is a want to be that will never make it - destined to second tier like YEG (even if they have more flights than YEG they are still second tier). Vancouver has arrived - and the only place for them to go is UP.

Guys, I will say it again... EMIRATES HAS SAID IN A PRESS RELEASE (WORLD TOUR) THAT THEY WANT TO COME TO CALGARY ASAP... BUT THE CANADIAN GOV'T. IS NOT WILLING TO NEGOTIATE A NEW BI-LATERAL WITH THE UAE.

And I know YVR and YUL make more sense before YYC... I am just telling you guys what EK said. Even I was surprised when they said that... Let's wait and see what happens... If you want my personal opinion, I think they will go daily to YYZ, YVR, YUL first before YYC.

I haven't heard anything about the Canadian government's unwillingness to negotiate a new bi-lateral. More likely it's the UAE wanting unlimited rights to the Canadian market without reciprocating. This a common of the UAE and Singapore. There isn't much I like about the Canadian government but when it comes to bi-lateral negotiations they are spot on.

AFAIK, the UAE was actually offering unlimited rights beyond; however, that doesn't offer a lot of benefits for Canadian carriers. Instead, the Canadian government offered the current rights where each carrier is allowed three flights per week and the situation will be renegotiated once the route is proven to have the traffic.

New sun destinations launched for the holidays
