Jlousa, what exactly do you do for a living? Whenever I try to tell people that your opinion is probrably the right one, telling them that you are always right just doesn't cut it.

Thanks so much for the pics.

I haven't figured out what exactly I do myself, besides cash the cheques they keep giving me. My business card says Site Director is my title.

Ah, site director for just Shangri-la, or is this a more general and widespread thing you do?

Great photos jlousa, thanks so much for taking and posting them. Quite the view.

Your expertise into the Shangri-La project makes a lot more sense now. I had a hunch you were a CoV development planner. You've got a pretty great project on your resume now. What's next once this is wrapped up next year?

yep. I'm trying to get a shot from Cloud 9 atop the Empire Landmark but I'm getting resistance from them. They don't want photography; just spend money attitude or don't bother coming by.

The other problem is they're not open till 5 and I'd assume it'd be too dark by then.

This city has a bad attitude. When I was in Portland I took some photos from the Portland Bar and Grill in the 30th Floor of the US Bankcorp Building and got nothing but smiles and Welcome to Portland.

I don't know what the hell it is about this town but people's attitude and demeanor had better improve before 2010.

A shot from Cloud 9 would've been cool... but nnooooooooooooooooo way

I can understand your thoughts as them having a bad attitude... however, you have to realize that that is a business and if they started letting everyone use it as a lookout it would be a disaster, especially if this became the norm when all the tourists are here for the olympics. I am sure that is there thinking. I bet if you have dinner there there would be no problem.

I shot 2 different 1.5 hour videos from the top of the empire landmark last year , (one rotation plus 20 minutes or so) and they were happy to let me do that, I just bought a few drinks the first time and a dinner the second time while doing it. I even showed the movie to some of the staff! perhpas you should buy a drink.

I'm sure Portland's level of tourism is quite significantly less than Vancouver's.
The staff at the Empire Landmark must get requests from photographer's all the time. Especially from hotel guests. Just order some food the next time you go.

If you put Shangri-La in New York City, you wouldn't even find it here! The towers around would hide it:

I would love to see your video! Do you have it posted on YouTube? Send us the link!

P.S Towerguy: One reason they would be reluctant to let photographers take shots from there is a business reason: If a pro photographer goes up there and takes a bunch of shots, they could very easily sell them to various stock agencies (e.g., Getty and the CBC archives would love professional panoramic aerial shots of a future Olympic city in the middle of a construction boom). So the owners probably blanket refuse photography, and only allow people who approach them in the proper procedure.

WRT the Cloud 9 at the Empire Landmark Hotel...I was angered to find that they are now charging a viewing fee in addition to the drink! Starting in 2004, I would always go there for my birthday. I believe it was in 2006 when I discovered that in addition to the drink charge, they had added a viewing charge of about $8 to our bill! I can't recall if that was per person or not. I was angry because they could have at least told us about that before we entered the bar area. I won't go back there again.

regarding cloud 9, it sucks!!! The whole thing needs to be gutted and renovated but also it really needs new management to take over that aren't so cheap.

5 pm in the middle of summer would not be dark, probably when they do most of their business.
