On Thursday a pile driving rig was assembled on Wabash half a block south of 13th street in the empty lot on the east side of Wabash.

It looks ready to rock 'n roll in the next few days... I believe this is Glashaus.

Keep an eye out for it... it could be moving to the "Under construction" list within a week or two.

Great news. I'm looking forward to Glashaus - should be a very welcome addition to the neighborhood, and help to counteract the lowly standards of Vision, Marquee and the Michigan Ave. Towers....

^^^ look at the bottom half of it, the angle is different, and sure enough, its completely distorted, even more so than Trump. These are relatively small panes of glass as well, I'd like to see anyone make a 6x8' pane of glass not distort...

Two projects that seem to take forever to complete.

Silver Tower

Silver Tower's core is just visible to the crane's lower right and 300 N. LaSalle is under construction to the left.

Yes, my sentiments exactly!!!!! why has MoMo and the Fairbanks taken forever to complete????? I was always under the impression that steel built towers always rose much faster. Seems like MoMo has been putting in windows now for well over a year, and dirty ugly not attractive windows at that!! Shame such a cool looking building on paper didn't turn out so well!! The Fairbanks another blah looking infill building!

^^^ Its still clearly the top layer of glass that is doing the distortion. Also, like I said before, these are 1 ft wide panels of glass, compare that to 6 x 8 or bigger panes on buildings like Trump.

^ nowhere, I know you're a die-hard distorted-glass defender, but I think you gotta admit that glass could be made a lot less distortionless than its made if it wasn't more expensive to do so. The upper glass at the institute is big and shiny, but the reflections are beautiful. Where's the skepticist in you??

^^^ Oh I agree, glass could be made perfectly flat and reflective if people were willing to spend tons of extra money on it, but my point is that nobody does that and that what make reflections look distorted is actually highly dependant on angle of viewing, reflectivity, lighting, size of the sheet of glass, and even what side of the building it is on.

I would love for everyone to use inch thick super-flat glass on their highrises, but I know its not economical and that's what I am an Econ major, I am extremely irritated by inefficiency and uneconomic waste.

Look at those panes there, do you honestly think that looks any less distortive than Trump? I don't, if you look at what it is reflecting (vertical lines on Aon) and what the shape of the panes and therefore distortion are, its no wonder it may appear to be less wavy. However, upon closer inspection, it is every bit as distortive as any other glass anywhere else in the city...

That said, I think that this is obviously better than the glass on Trump because the architect used good design to reduce distortions and the likes by making skinny little panes instead of huge sheets.

Dec 17 - 155 N Wacker

Overview [ full set http://picasaweb.google.com/harry.r.carmichael/155NWackerHeli ]

Cool crane - Diesel powered.

idleing ( if you look closely you can see some exhaust )

The frame and core crews seem to have had the day off - probably due to the work on the crane above.

The crane from Clark st.

^^^ Very cool crane, you don't see alot of those! How do they get the fuel up there? Probably through some kind of fuel line running up the crane?

Why spend any money on building then? Everyhing should be precast with the worlds tiniest windows. Why would you ever put stianless on a building or build anyhting other than a box? Building isn't SIMPLY about economics.

The point is, high-quality glass is available. Developers who are interesting in creating a quality building will pay for such. And its stupid to give developers a free pass to use crappy glass.

^^^ My point is that, though it would be possible to make glass perfectly reflective, its completely impractical which is why NO ONE does it. Show me one building in the city that has large glass windows that are even close to perfectly reflective. No the art institute expansion doesn't count because its clearly distortive from at least some angles, all depending on how you look at it and the windows are small panes.

Granted I agree with you that some glass is really cheap and could probably be much better and at least a little less distortive. Trump is in that category to some extent, but I don't think its all that bad seeing as how the Mies masterpiece right next to it is just as loopy except less reflective and noticeable.

The Reliance Building originally was fitted with actual plate glass, and old photos show the dramatic difference it made. Unfortunately, it is no longer made, so modern float glass had to be substituted when it was renovated.
