What one might think is appropriate for 400 south should not be confused with what might fit well at Traverse Ridge, in an empty field. How is that a contradiction?

I'm not offened or defensive, just confused by your assumption.
No, I'm not talking about Brant Anderson's project, I'm talking about the post where you quoted Smilingbob on the Utah Valley: Development News Thread, specifically your first comment. I do agree that variety is good, however, we already have more than our fair share of neighborhoods and neighborhoods of single family houses on their .5 acre lots (urban sprawl). But we don't have enough alternate options.
Continuing to build the way we do, is irresponsible, it's not sustainable. I don't know about you, but I'm not planning on the world ending anytime soon (unless we don't clean up our act). But, there are some who do think it's going to end soon, and most of those people, whose logic is along these lines of thinking, don't take responsibility and are only concerned about initial (here and now) gains. I'm betting Tom Dollan and many on the "Hill" have this "here and now" and "the world is going to end soon anyway" logic.

Understood, And I agree Urbanboy, we do need more options of the more urban variety. That's why I was complaining about 400 south. I feel that it is probably one of the Valley's most ideal, potential urban corridors. I'm sure it will eventually happen along that route, I'm just impatient.

You'll have to excuse me Urbanboy, sometimes it's so frustrating when the communication is written, and not verbal, eye-to-eye. I'm sure you know what I mean.

SLC metro to become like Houston and LA

Houston and LA both have big developments outside of downtown during the 70's and 80's. They are just now being able to counter that. What can we do to curb whatever developers and selfish, greedy, ignorant guys like Tom Dolan from ruining the heart of the region??????

Okay this is just stupid! 2 30 story building in Sandy! Its time slc get off its but and start getting developers to come to SLC. And maybe we can learn from sandy! they took the stadium lets start fighting fire with fire and take the developer and get them up north to Salt lake I know at least 4-6 places we could put them.

So what if Sandy has the tallest skyscrapers? I realize this is a thread for skyscraper enthusiasts, but tall buildings do not = cool cities. At least this area will have decent access to mass transit, and I would rather we build up than out! Are you guys in favor or against the Gehry project in Lehi?? because it is a similar concept. Salt Lake has substance! Which is why you couldn't pay me to live in Sandy or Lehi. As long as we preserve and build on the traits that make Salt Lake unique it will always be the heart of the Wasatch Front. Personally I would trade some of downtown's skyscrapers for the charm they replaced anyday (is this heresy?? ) I am in favor of the "if there's only one, you can find it downtown" idea. That is what makes a great city, and losing unique projects like the Broadway theater or aquarium should be more concerning to Salt Lake officials than skyscrapers. Besides- the tallest building is an arms race that is easily lost.

Wait, where in the article does it suggest these towers will be the tallest in Utah? Outside of the headline, it does not give any information on the height of these two towers. Just because it's 30 stories tall, does not mean it'll become the tallest building in the valley, or the state of Utah for that matter. It sounds like a lot of speculation and I would be floored if it actually happened.

Yeah, there are a couple of qualifying statements in there like: "may include" and "nearly" 30 stories tall.

what dumb asses. Seriously, we are at a time in SLC history and Utah history that we can create a city on the par of "world class" but yet we have stupid greedy asses who don't see that vision and who want the glory for them selves. ... It makes me soooooo pissed off.

First the stadium, then the broadway theatre, now trying to take the office space. .... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, this Sandy bashing is kind of fun or bizarre, I'm not sure which. Anyway, on a little bit of a lighter note,

Here's a pic of the new Hyatt Gateway Place

courtesy image

http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_7717614

The Boyer Co. is planning to round out The Gateway, a Salt Lake City retail, housing and office development, with a 128-room hotel at 55 N. 400 West. The six-story building would be home to the Gateway Hyatt Place Hotel.

I think it is high time that Downtown, Salt Lake figured out ways to package attractive incentives for certain types of development projects,(iconic, 40 plus story towers.) We should be able to do it in much the same way that the State and Huntsman has been luring so many companies here, with attractive incentives and agressive lobbying.

Also, always keep in mind that a good deal, if not most of the property that sits idle downtown is owned by a type of out-of-state slumlord. By that I mean people who live elsewhere, just sitting on the property, and feeling no sense of ownership or pride in the community. There only ambition/game/motivation is to aim for the highest $$$ return possible. They will stubbornly sit on a piece of property and let it rot, with absotlutely no improvements except to collect parking fees. A good deal of the blocks downtown are very fractionalized by these derelicts. If it is at all possible, Salt Lake City and State government needs to pass laws that make it unpleasant to leave property downtown in such a condition. There should be some kind of exorbitant fee, tax or penalty for such behavior, and reward, incentives to develop.

Right you are Delts. I think that was the reason for placing all those trees on the parking lot block South of the Moss Courthouse. Although it is an improvment, I suspect the real reason was somebody was trying to avoid the "blighted" designantion, so that he could continue "holding" out for the biggest buck. And when I think of the building that used to grace that location, and how it was demolished to avoid taxes! This picture makes me ill every time I see it!! Thought I'd share the pain...

Deseret News

Although I am a big believer in property rights, city ordinances should stipulate a time frame for redevelopment. It is not fair for neighboring businesses and properties to be stuck with a blighted block for decades.

Unhappy CCCRI's mystery glass tower waiting for Hamilton to get off their butts

Guys, I'm pretty sure City Creek Center R? Incorporated has just been kind to Hamilton Partners to get their building leased and up. Otherwise they would have announced their mystery glass tower on the se corner of 1st and main by now. I think Hamilton and the city just do not have their act together. If we has a guy as aggressive as Dolan we would have had he Hamilton Tower up and a few more spring up as we speak. You would think that Hamilton Partners could have that building halfway if not all the way leased by now if they were just a little more aggressive and get those people trying to lease in the south part of the valley. Slc needs to do a better job of selling the pros of slc instead of putting up road blocks. I'm not exactly sure why slc and Hamilton have had troubles with that tower, but maybe its a problem the city has kind of created. Maybe the city with Rocky( don;t get me wrong I like a lot of what Rocky has done), has created a reputation of you can't build here without us having some issues. Whereas Dolan is like hey come on over to Sandy, build big, build whatever, we like you.

Maybe this is news from Sandy is enough for CCCRI to go ahead and step up and announce their mystery glass tower. Then those developers from Sandy will think twice, because they know that CCCRI will not be playing around. Maybe those people trying to find office leases will look to CCCRI if they propose something because they are probably mormon concervative suburban base, and if CCCRI(supported by the LDS church) proposes something as helping and benefiting from being near Temple Square then maybe they will be more likely to listen, rather than hearing a pitch from Rocky. My parents live in Sandy. My mom reacts to Rocky with disgust. My mom is a typical suburban mormon, who is pretty ignorant about city development and could care less.

I'm sure if the folks up on capitol hill hired some professionals to do a study about urban development, they would find that this kind of development that is being proposed in Sandy will hurt the region, because it takes away or competes/dominates against dowtown slc. I think somebody with a good ability of persuasion kind of like Dolan, but definitely more honest, and more knowledgeable about good urban development, propose this study and then get the lawmakers to put in some controls about where development should be much like the Urban Growth Boundary in Portland.

I do not think that we want the kind of sprawl development that Houston and LA had decades ago. We will be following in their footsteps in ignorance and without realizing or ignoring all the problems they have had with that kind of development.

I agree with Delts. Also, when I was involved in the CCC project the mystery glass tower there were rumors of it even being as tall as 40 stories. I'm betting that those people who have stakes claimed in downtown development are feeling like they just got a kick in the pants to speed things up or lose out. I bet we will hear something soon from one of them.

I was thinking the same thing Orlando. This announcement or leak if you will of these twin towers, almost seems like an elaborate political game of cat and mouse. It's as if SLC and Sandy are playing Presidential Politics.
