Gatineau-Aylmer LRT?

There was news lately about Gatineau planning an "Urban Village" up in the Plateau area.
I mentioned how it would fail if it did not have proper rapid transit connections, because people will still need cars to get up there.

With the huge number of houses planned for the empty land north of Aylmer, it is unfortunate that a transit corridor has not been planned parallel to Boulevard des Allumettières.
So it got me thinking, how could this be done? There is rail already to the Gatineau sector, and it would be easy to carve a ROW west of St-Raymond. But how to connect the two? with a bit of infrastructure investment, here's an idea:

Of course, they'll have to give up on the Rapibus concept

My wife would love it (she's a nurse at the hospital).

it'd be weird to see an elevated rail at the plateau... and you're cutting right through the Timmy's parking lot. What ever will the commuters do during construction??

I guess you could put the station over it right there and have another Timmy's above to serve the train commuters and the one below doing the drive-through. Call it a "double-double"

You could also tunnel under that whole area if you like it "black"

Whatever you do, don't mess with a Tim's drive-thru.

And also I believe it passes right through a Wal-Mart parking lot.

I may be dreaming but this may be a potential area for a future Rapibus line that would follow parallel des Allumettieres until Montcalm Station or Saint-Raymond Boulevard, whether which option would be the best. There looks to be enough space available for most of that length for a future transit corridor. If Ottawa is able to build the Bayshore-Pinecrest Transitway through a tight segment between the sound wall and the 417, there should be more then enough space for the Rapibus, right?.

Ever since the Aylmer railroads where wiped out and replaced by the bike trail, des Allumettieres seems to be the only area left possible for a rapid transit-only corridor even though most of the designated lanes on Aylmer Road are doing a good job until they catch the traffic crutch starting at the UQO.

I think they should have two ULR lines serving the east end of Gatineau;

One line following going from Eardly and Front, following the old RR tracks and turning up on Rivermead then following Chemin d'Aylmer to downtown Hull where it follows Ave. Du Portage, turned pedestrian or transit mall. Another spur would connect with the O-Train at Bayview.

the second line would follow the Aylmer Line from the core to St-Raymond where it turns north and follows it to Boulevard du plateau. The train would follow this road till it reaches Boulevard Des Grives which it will follow untill Ch. DeLaMontagne Nord.

But I do like your idea!

If the 1500m long tunnel is on clear ground, why is it a tunnel?

Putting that extra money into a longer extension rather that a tunnel will lead to a better system in the end.

I still think they should serve the south of Aylmer first...

I guess I didn't really elaborate on my idea with a bigger picture. Basically, I think it would be a waste to re-lay tracks on the old railway along the river because it just runs past golf courses and very little density. Running it up through the Plateau opens the area up for smart development along the Des Allumettières corridor. Using part of the ROW reserved for the Deschenes-Britannia arterial means giving up on MTQ's idea of an autoroute there, which is good, and connecting up with Lincoln Fields makes it useful for Aylmerites travelling westbound to Kanata

How so? Show me that plan. I think the only plan for Aylmer is for some gallons of paint to mark bus-only lanes on existing roads.

I think that Councillor Riel mentionned that the section of Rapibus he wants towards Aylmer would use the grass-median on des Allumettieres until Saint-Raymond - it doesn't go via Gamelin and I don't think what Riel wants would go that far north of des Allumettieres and I don't it would go all the way to the Deschenes area near the river

They're starting construction on another Parc-o-bus at Eardley and des Allumettières.

That was the plan I heard of...
Makes sense!
