Aside from the silly 'cosmopolitan' advertising for Bridge Street and, as Lee Roop so poignantly described, the 'simulated authenticity' of faux-Italian buildings, I'm rather excited about the complex filling up with tenants. Monaco Pictures is especially cool... and the drinks are not all that expensive.

Been awhile since someone has posted here. Is Tiger on vacation?

But they issued the building permits for the new publix on 53 this pass sunday.

Kind of quite at the moment but a few things

The crane is in place at UAH for the new parking garage(Intermodal Center)
The old Krystal on Jordan LN at I-565, anyone know what is going to be?
Another Broken Egg restaurant at Valley Bend is open.
Looks like prep work has begun at Constellation downtown.

2008 is going to be a big building year for Huntsville

WAFF TV has now done a report so this will really start the rush as it now seems official.Why do they insist on calling these things malls? It will be an

New development around Highway 72 East and Moores Mill Road



Build it and they will come! That's the attitude developers are taking with a an area of Huntsville that will soon be the next big place to live and shop.

At Highway 72 East and Moores Mill Road, bulldoziers move earth to make way for a multi-million dollar development known as Harris Hills.

When the proposed mall is finished, popular stores like Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, Old Navy and JC Penney will move in.

There will also be a movie theater, ampitheater, park and twohotels -- along with multi-family communities.

Jim Crumrine, owner of Weichert Realtors, says the area is booming with growth.

"It will look like a city in a city to me," says Crumrine.

Turning farming fields like this one into a money making venture, encouraging more and more families to move east.

Already, high end homes going up one after another in the mouth of the mountain.

Crumrine says as companies and families move to Huntsville, they will have their pick of places to shop and live.

"We expect thousands and thousands of people in the next few years. This area is what we call location, location, location," says Crumrine.

Besides the Harris Hills project and family home development, this map shows where overpasses will be built and an interchage connecting I-565 to High Mountain Road. Improvements made all in the name of progress.

"Its like the perfect place to be," says Crumrine.

Work on the mall development is a little ahead of schedule because workers have had dry weather.

The service road over the mountain should be complete by spring 2009.

The restaurant that is going into the old Krystals on Jordan Lane is a "Frizzles." Never heard of it before, but it is a chicken joint.

What's a restaurant with no freezer and no heat lamps? It can mean only three things: fresh, fresh, fresh.

That's the way local entrepreneur Kumar Patel describes his soon-to-open restaurants called Five Guys Burgers & Fries. One will be on Enterprise Way just off the University Drive West intersection, another will be in Jones Valley, and a third will be in Decatur.

The Enterprise Way restaurant will be first to open - in mid-December - and the one in Valley Bend at Jones Farm should follow just before Christmas, Patel says. Both will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily

Santa Fe farewell

Folks have been asking why Santa Fe Junction Grill across from Grissom High School on Bailey Cove Road has been closed. Owner Vaun Schrader says he was just not able to find enough staff, and he could not work all the time.

"It boils down to peace of mind," he says. "The employee situation has become so competitive."

So he has gone back to working with his mother and father, Sonja and Dieter Schrader, at their two German restaurants - Ol' Heidelberg on University Drive and Cafe Berlin on Airport Road.

A lack of qualified employees seems to be delaying other restaurant openings around Huntsville. The rumor is that hiring is a problem for such eateries as Connor's Steak & Seafood at Bridge Street Town Centre.

I always thought that place would have been good for another Starbucks because it's near the university. There's no need for another chicken place in Huntsville.

Job market is very tight. Bookkeepers, office managers, waiters, etc. etc. has made the market extremely competitive. Turnover in all service sectors or administrative and support staff is ridiculous.

How do you improve this situation, because it can choke growth if you can't get these lower wage jobs to fill in.

a Q&A in the Huntsville Times about the Constellation project

Q. What happened to the Constellation project in downtown Huntsville? I heard about it back in May but haven't heard anything since. Is that project still on the map?

A. Yes, said Scott McLain, Constellation's developer. McLain said the site's two Marriott hotels, Courtyard and SpringHill Suites, will acquire their property next month and begin construction in January. Once some road access details are made final, deals with stores and restaurants can begin, he said.

The $150 million project at the old MarketSquare Heart of Huntsville mall site will have small shops and restaurants on the ground level and larger retailers on the second floor. McLain said working out agreements with retailers can take several months.

Huntsville's downtown development caught the attention of the Birmingham News. The article talked about Constellation, 200 Park Tower, and the VBC renovation:

"The civic center also plans to spend up to $20 million on renovation projects and expansion in the next few years. Highlights include doubling the size of the women's restrooms, adding 1,000 floor seats in the arena for concerts, renovating concession stands, adding a mini cafe, and replacing walls along the southeast side of the arena to give a view from the cafe and concourse of Big Spring Park.

About $4 million for those projects has come from a special tax district set up to fund projects in the downtown area. City officials are working to get the other $12 million to $16 million for the work, including a look at selling naming rights to parts of the civic center."

I stew everytime I hear about city plan's to renovate Joe Davis Stadium, as mentioned in this morning's paper.

If the city wants better attendance for the Stars, they need to lay down a new ballpark and integrate it into the commercial node of northwestern downtown or Lincoln Village

That park is still a baby in baseball years. It opened up in the mid 80's, and if you think that is old, then you must be very very young.

It's the oldest park in the entire Southern League. Consider that.
