Who would have thought that Salt Lake would be developing in such a way. it is great how everything is moving so fast, and creating a dense feel to the city. taking from the post about Lehi and the subject matter of architecture, It would be really great to have someone build an Architectural marvel closer to the Center to rival Lehi.

As for the Gateway, I have no problem with the style, tacky as it may seem, it is better than an under used, neglected, and forgoten area that it once held its self to be. As for the buildings themsleves, they do not hold, nor do they offer any sentimental value. The way I figure is, unless I'm the one going to the HomeDepot (which i would do willingly) buying the supplies and materials to help create the buildings, I cant really get to bent out of shape about it.

Capitol improvements: Giant 4-year project getting down to wire

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695231661,00.html

Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret Morning News

David Hart tells how plaster cherubs have been stripped of gold spray paint and refinished to look like they were carved from ivory ( Jeffrey D. Allred)

An open house for the public will be held from Jan. 5-8. What visitors will see when they walk the halls of the Capitol will be new colors and finishes on the walls and floors intended to more accurately replicate the original plans for the building.

Another key in making Salt Lake City a first class city, at least in my opinion.

River on the edge
Since its beginnings in the 1970s, the 44-mile, three-county project has had a long, winding road to completion. A new master plan may give it the final push it needs.

I love how they talk about an Urban water trail. While we don't have a major river or body of fresh water like many cities, the Jordan River is a great opportunity to provide some of the same benefits in Salt Lake City and County. The key in my mind, besides finishing the last 20%, is to connect it to the east/west trails that exist or that are planned. To be able to connect from the mouth of Parleys to the river on a nature type trail would be a nice way to get away without having to get away.

A different kind of market
Utah still tops in home-price appreciation

http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_7596050

It is taking longer to sell a house along the Wasatch Front these days, and many sellers aren't getting full asking price anymore.
But it could be worse - a lot worse. Utah still leads the country in home-price appreciation, according to a report released Thursday by a federal agency.

While Utah's housing market may be switching to a lower gear, some experts think the state's real estate market will avoid a sharp downturn. (Trent Nelson/Tribune file photo )

Utah housing market still thriving/State posts biggest increase in home prices in the nation

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree. I love what The Gateway mall did for the area, but saying "well it's better than a blighted train yard" is no longer a good enough excuse for me. The developer is spreading frosting over a box and calling it an office building. I expect it to melt if we get a bad enough rain storm. The new retail addition at the north end is just as sad compared to what was originally planned. It seems like the quality really took a turn for the worse when the Inland Group bought The Gateway from Boyer. Or did they only purchase the retail portion? I'm not sure. But they're in it to make money, and I think they're worried about the day City Creek Center opens and their sales drop a little. It's all about the bottom line. But that's no excuse. All they're doing is encouraging more cheap development. I point to the condos that are going to be built next to the Citifront Apartments on 600 west. The plans look terrible. I moved to this area because I wanted to live in a nice, dense, walkable, urban neighborhood. I didn't move to the area to live in Disneyland. I praise The Gateway for being an economic catalyst but I'd hoped they would have been a better example of what this area should develop into. Just because I didn't buy the stucco they spayed on the building (although I'm sure any one of us could have afforded to) doesn't mean I don't have a right to complain. We're the one's that have to look at it.

The mindset that it's better than what was there before doesn't wash. We should never downgrade our city just for the sake of making something better than what was there before. I've never liked the Disneyland feel of the Gateway, but tolerated it because I had hopes future development would be a bit diverse. Instead, we're getting an even worse, watered down version of what was originally built at the Gateway. Blah.

The Broadway Style Theater is going to Sandy

There will be an official announcement soon.

Mayor Tom Dollan is disgustingly dishonest! ...and so are his buddies up on the "Hill!"

Do they not realize what they are doing?! Salt Lake City has the potential to become a killer destination. If we don't centrally locate everything, Salt Lake City won't become the destination and economic engine it could become. The greater the destination, the greater the amount of people that will consider visiting or moving here. This might help Sandy in the moment, but it won't help Salt Lake County's economy as it could, should it be located in Downtown Salt Lake City.

If that is true, then it really sucks. A broadway style theater should be and needs to be in downtown SLC and not Sandy.

I don't mind them having a music hall or theatre situation in Sandy, just like I don't think it's a problem to have an exposition center in Sandy. However, if this theatre is meant to replace the one that should be built downtown, then I will have a very big problem with it.

Hey there Urbanboy, So were you told that this theatre was being built in Sandy INSTEAD of downtown, or is it Sandy just trying to create more of a cultural scene for it's city? ...(which by the way it needs)

What would be great if both cities could get a Broadway Style Theater. But the one in downtown Salt Lake needs to be bigger.

But this does make me wounder WHY is eveything going to Sandy? First the Stadium, then the living Planet and now this. I mean I like seeing the city of Sandy grow, But not at the cost of downtown Salt Lake City losing out.

The Aquarium being in Sandy has been mentioned several times. Did I miss an official announcement in the paper as to the final site for the permanent aquarium or are you referring to the the preview exhibit that moved from Gateway to Sandy?

Are you sure about that? The stadium deal was that Sandy gets the stadium and SLC gets the theater. Where did you hear this? and when will this announcement be?

If this is so, I think we should run Tom Dolan and his cohorts out of office and out of the county!!!

an article from 06/22/2006

http://www.slweekly.com/index.cfm?oID=44...s&id=1CA7DAD4-2BF4-55D0-F1F5976CCDE113E9

At the end of May, the Salt Lake Chamber launched a planning process to map the future of downtown. The plan is sure to include a cultural district of theaters and museums intended to give people a reason to stay downtown after the workday or to come in from the suburbs. The coveted moneymaking piece of the district called for in a consultant’s study is a large theater to host touring companies of Broadway shows.

This year, Dolan went to Salt Lake County asking for Zoo, Arts and Parks tax money to build a performing arts center as an add-on to Sandy’s 6-year-old outdoor amphitheater. Uncharacteristically, he was turned down, a sign, some say, that changing politics of Salt Lake County may be putting a chink in Dolan's armor.

Dolan says Salt Lake City need not worry. Sure, he has talked to county leaders about putting the government-subsidized Broadway theater in Sandy, but he doesn’t think that’s in the cards now. The theater he’s currently working on is much smaller, for community theater. “I want to go to Salt Lake City to see major theatrical productions,” Dolan said.

Trina Klingler, Sandy’s communications director, said Sandy doesn’t want Salt Lake City’s business but said that doesn’t mean Sandy can’t reach for its goal “to make Sandy a destination.”

Who, knows... things could have changed....

Time will tell, sooner or later time will tell.

Also, at the office we are doing a site work proposal for Artspace Development for the property located at 800 south and 400 west. I was told that it will be roughly the same size as "the bridges at citifront development" by the gateway. So, who knows. So, if thats true count on about another 200+/- units for the development.
