At the end of May, the Salt Lake Chamber launched a planning process to map the future of downtown. The plan is sure to include a cultural district of theaters and museums intended to give people a reason to stay downtown after the workday or to come in from the suburbs. The coveted moneymaking piece of the district called for in a consultant’s study is a large theater to host touring companies of Broadway shows.
This year, Dolan went to Salt Lake County asking for Zoo, Arts and Parks tax money to build a performing arts center as an add-on to Sandy’s 6-year-old outdoor amphitheater. Uncharacteristically, he was turned down, a sign, some say, that changing politics of Salt Lake County may be putting a chink in Dolan's armor.
Dolan says Salt Lake City need not worry. Sure, he has talked to county leaders about putting the government-subsidized Broadway theater in Sandy, but he doesn’t think that’s in the cards now. The theater he’s currently working on is much smaller, for community theater. “I want to go to Salt Lake City to see major theatrical productions,” Dolan said.
Trina Klingler, Sandy’s communications director, said Sandy doesn’t want Salt Lake City’s business but said that doesn’t mean Sandy can’t reach for its goal “to make Sandy a destination.”
Who, knows... things could have changed....
Time will tell, sooner or later time will tell.
