Last night the wife and I were driving around downtown and we saw the lights at temple square. I love how there's even lights put up on the wooden sidewalks of the CCC site. Those blue Christmas tree shape lights looks cool. I also loved how there was tons of people walking around downtown last night.

Now that I look at it, the Gateway V building doesn't look as bad as I first fear it would. Infact I think I like the design and shape of the building more the the Gateway IV even if that building is bigger and taller.

It doesn't look *as bad* as I thought it would either.. but it still looks like a cheap wedding cake to me.. I can't believe there isn't a single brick on it. Even on the first level all they did was slap on some tiles. Not even cement blocks. It looks like they got all the building supplies one afternoon at home depot.
Cheap. It should get an award for not being as ugly as it could be.. an example of what kind of office building you can build with the change you find in your couch cushions.. but thats about it. First they knock off a floor, nix the retail portion to the east (put in a parking lot instead) and then they glue on a sandpaper foam facade. It looks more like a fake building that was built for a movie set with the intent to demolish it in 5 weeks.

Orpheum, I'm wondering if there is somebody or group, such as the city council that we can address on this exterior problem that Boyer is creating. While I agree that the building could have been much worse in it's configuration, the exterior finish is about as tacky as could have been created. I use to have a healthy respect for Boyer Co., but lately whenever I see that Boyer is going to be the developer, it gives me more a feeling of anxiety than anything else. Seriously, I don't mean to say that with any kind of sarcasm, but in complete sobriety.

Perhaps the new Mayor could be encouraged to establish certain regulations regarding the amount of foam stucco sprayed onto these new buildings.

Many cities have a design review committee that developers have to go through before they get approval. I think Mayor Becker needs to tighten the restrictions on what exterior materials and in what amounts those materials get used on new buildings in the city.

I think you guys are being too hard on the building. It's no more tacky and phony than the rest of Gateway. The over-all pastel color scheme has had plenty of negative comments. It's about the only thing I dislike about the project. Hopefully if there are any more buildings, they will use some darker red- or brown-brick colors to help balance all the pastels.

I think gateway could be alot better looking if they went throughout the project and added a variety of colors to the exteriors of the buildings, and if they used more brick and stone. Could make it really cool. ... That clock tower makes me laugh everytime I see it. I mean come on. lol a stucco clock tower... hahaha. .. I agree with you Delts and Future Mayor we need a design commitee.

I agree SightSeer that the size and configuration of the building is very attractive, and perhaps 'tacky' is a little too strong a word. However, as everyone seems to agree, the foam spray has gone way past the point of being discretionary. I also agree with Scraperdude, especially on the clock tower.

I think Mayor Becker would be very receptive to this forum. Future Mayor, maybe since you will some day be in his Mayor's club you can send him an e-mail.

Gateway, as a mix of shapes and sizes is one of the most attractive Lifestyle Centers I have seen. We just need to add a little natural stonework and brick in various places.

I'll just go ahead and give Ralph a call and introduce myself as his successor when he decides he's had enough of being mayor. I'm sure he'll make room to just sit down for a couple of hours while I'm in town for the holidays, I would guess that I'd be first on his priority list.

A new direction for northern Murray location

I know we've talked about it already but I had to post the official ground breaking news. These transit oriented developments will continue to help the valley and state get more transit options. As mentioned in the article there are already several projects that are TOD nearby, including 4800 S and 3800 S. This will make a nice little string of TOD in the Murray and Millcreek areas. There is also the apartments at the 10000 S station and the new one proposed near the historic Sandy station. Market Square, while not directly on Traxx, but on the proposed trolley line is another great example.

As these projects are successful, and I have no doubt that they will be, others will continue to pop up and the existing ones will grow. I can literally envision North Temple having a whole new look in the next 15-20 years as residential, commercial and retail developments sprout near the Airport line.

They may have already done it but if not they need to, West Valley City and West Jordan need to implement TOD zoning now and allow for the developments to be built in conjunction with the new lines. I think the cities that Front Runner stops in also need to look at their zoning maps and make TOD adjustments at those locations.

Imaging living in a TOD in Clearfield or Payson and being able to go to work in Downtown SLC, Ogden, or Provo; a UTAH football or b-ball game, a Jazz game, a REAL game or a Grizzlies game and never have to get in your car. Now that would be a transit oriented region!

It wouldn't surprise me to see Front Runner extended to Brigham City and Nephi, within the next 15 years.

Wow, these buildings are new but yet they will look historic. I am really starting to like all of the cool new projects in Murray. All these new buildings is giving Murray City a whole new look.
