Of any of the potential buildings going up, The Ovation (block 52; current parking lot behind the current post office) has an extremely good chance of being built. Novarre has proved with 360 that there is enormous demand for downtown condos in that price range, and if the pricing of The Ovation is line with 360's that project will be wildly successful too. My guess is that as soon as the spire is hung at 360, they will re-tenant the sales office for 360 to show the model and fixtures for The Ovation.
Speaking of things getting built what's the deal with The W project?? They started out with such a bang, but NOTHING has happened on their site since the grand opening party. At the pace they were going before, it would have seemed like the bulldozers would be there the Monday after the party.

Their site plan has yet to be approved by the city. The developer may be tweeking a few things and as a result, the approval of the site plan is being held-up... In any case, as of earlier this fall, the W had contracts pending for roughly 75-80% of its units.
I wouldn't worry about this project. It will happen.

I've been over in that area twice in the past couple of weeks and wondered what was going on over there. When I've been in the past, the place has been deserted, but the last time there were a bunch of pickups on the property and workmen were installing new windows and doing some other work. I also noticed a couple of posters about a hearing for a historical zoning change that were lying in the street.

Adjacent to (and one level below) the Castle - overlooking Lamar Blvd - is the old foundation for the condo project that was started several years ago and then canceled.

I wouldn't mind living in a condo with a view like that.
With regard to the Austonian, their guys say that they have plenty of financing, and do not need to have a set number of presales before they can go up with the building.
That said, I'm sure they wouldn't have started without a good idea that they'd sell enough to break even.
Wow, Mike. Those are awesome! I've never seen that view before. Very cool angle of the skyline. The Nokonah looks impressive there.
Can't honestly say I've ever been impressed with the looks of the Nokonah. From the street level on the curved side it looks pretty descent, but these views reveal a pretty bad design flaw... failure to conceal the rooftop utility units. They did the best they could after the fact, I guess, by painting them all black, but it's still ugly.
I guess I'll post these here too since not everyone visits the Texas section. Here's some pictures from the last couple of days. 11/17 and 11/18.
First, a few hazy shots from "China Hill" from Saturday afternoon. That's not the actual name, but as there is a China Hill restaurant there, that's what I call it. This is located of course in South Austin along William Cannon Drive between West Gate Drive and Brodie Lane.
The Monarch just barely shows up here. The building sits 30 to 50 feet lower than the rest of downtown to the east, so it barely shows up here. For example, The Monarch's west side sits as low as 444 feet above sea level, while Frost Bank Tower is at 484 feet above sea level. Many other buildings in downtown are over 500 feet above sea level. Wher4 I was standing atop "China Hill" is about 783 feet above sea level.
The next four shots were taken from Deatonhill Drive just around the corner. There are some apartments that sit atop the hill with a very nice view of downtown and the surrounding area to the north.
I ran up the driveway for the apartments for the next 3 shots. This is the view is lined up with the downstairs and upstairs apartment. Even the downstairs apartment was a good 8 feet higher than where I was standing.
Next door is a new project filling in what used to be a vacant lot. Not sure what they're doing, but it's probably apartments of some sort, and of course they'll have a view.

Very nice!! I'm most impressed from my work's angle of view. The spire stands out MUCH more than I had envisioned (and this is before the glass is in, which will make it all the more visible). Also, the height is basically even with Frost (at least from my vantage point).

It must look better from your angle, because from the webcam it looks a little wimpy. Also, we've been told that the building height will be 562' including a 100' spire...what they have up is not 100' tall. I guess a flagpole-type extension will complete the total?
Hey we are moving at the first of the year to Austin. I am going to be working in New Braunfels but being from Nashville, Austin feels more like home. I am a photo junkie and love to take city scape pictures. That being said, in Nashville we had some forum meetings that toured the new developments. Do you guys have anything going on like that in Austin? Please let me know anything you would like about Austin. I do know the traffic is bad so we will be living south of downtown. Thank you...
