Board looking for Plan B to expand McCormick Hyatt
By Kathy Bergen | Tribune staff reporter
11:46 AM CST, November 6, 2007

"The public agency that owns the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place is weighing alternate ways to finance a 600-room expansion because the logjam in Springfield has left its favored plan in limbo, at least temporarily."

yes. the wit hotel butts up against a very strange and small building that is set back from the street. i think hwc keeps their heating system in there... or something like that... i actually think that strange and seemingly useless little lot is kind of cool... but yeah, the wit hotel butts up against that thing, and the alley is on its north side.

RE: The Wit. I think they should try to have windows on the east. Right next to the site is a ComEd substation and we all know how likely it is that it would ever be moved. see-Block 37. East of the substation is Harold Washington College, which is 14 stories, if that. The worst views in the hotel will be on the narrow, north side. Rooms there will have a lovely view of UNITRIN, which is an alley away.

In the Streeter photo, what is the building in the background? At first I thought it was the old Time-Life building, but not in the right location for that is it?

Yeah, the substation is only three stories high... the hotel is 20+. The blank wall would probably be visible even from Mich Ave. But experienced Chicago aesthetes know to avert their eyes from Lake Street anyway...

I usually don't bother to express my opinions on new projects. And scrolling through post after post of "I like this" or "This sucks" is just an annoyance. I propose that any opinion posts of less than three sentences (i.e., opinions without reasoned justification) be forbidden. but seriously.

Yeah, but if it is what I am thinking about (the building formally know as "The Doral") the are only doing the first two floors, and I thought it was to be done in conjunction with the new tower that is supposed to replace that little restaurant, La Strata.

am I confused?

If you look at the renderings of the new tower (which should be built) the "Doral" actually has black panels.

No, you're right.

No, the concrete was painted dark. Personally, i'd rather see that disaster of a building demolished, but the new tower infront of it is the next best thing I guess!
