If you can wade through all the crap at WHNT's website there are
4 videos that will give a glimpse of Bridge Street especially the carosel
in part 4. TV websites have become useless junk of ads, self promotion,
stupid stories and poor camera work. Why they didn't show the actual buildings and other details is strange.
Anyway Bridge Street will be the finest and most unique shopping/residential
area in Alabama when completed.

Alabama needs at least 1 Borders soon. Book A Million can't keep Border's scared away from Alabama forever.

There's gonna be a need for retail infill as construction prices and land prices for commercial development rise. Those spots will be filled in good time.

Border's is overrated, and B&N's discount membership costs are astronomical compared to Crooks a Million.

Bookstores have been struggling a bit, Waldenbooks is a Borders company
and has a location at Madison Square. Not like the Borders store but it's
an alternative. The new Barnes& Noble will be impressive in any case.

The Mayors state of the city address had some hints

"In a question and answer session, Spencer told the crowd to expect an announcement soon on a new downtown restaurant and movement on a new parking garage at Holmes Avenue and Green Street. She revealed a dog park is in the works near the skateboard park below Interstate 565 downtown."
HSV Times

The restaurant is probably the long awaited one on the top floor of Big Spring Summit, and the parking garage may help spur the long rumored (21+ story)
condo tower

Rumor is that the restaurant at the top of the summit will actually be more of a night club called the "Blue Monkey." Brueggers is having a hard time attracting customers I think. They are pretty dead at lunch and are no longer open on weekends. I hope the announcement will bring more attention to both it and Cafe Babas. That YMCA will do wonders for downtown too I think.

So does this give a go ahead for planned high rise next to the Summit?

So Scott McLain says that Cheesecake Factory WON'T be coming to Constellation Huntsville, but he did say he was trying to get another Cheesecake related restaurant there.

http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=7304669

I heard that, and this was the 1st place I thought of: http://www.copelandscheesecakebistro.com/

I'm just not sure if we can give any sort of Copeland brand another chance in HSV, what with the way they left town in the middle of the night all those years ago. And that location is still empty.

North Huntsville Meridianville area get ready..

By STEVE DOYLETimes Staff Writer [email protected]
Private service set in fast-growing Meridianville area

MERIDIANVILLE - A private utility company has beat the Madison County Commission in bringing sanitary sewer service to the booming Meridianville and Hazel Green areas.

Birmingham-based Integra Water LLC is wrapping up construction on a $5.5 million wastewater treatment plant off McCollum Road that should open in January, said Wes Self, the company's vice president of engineering.

Self said the plant has several customers lined up, including five subdivisions, Madison County Executive Airport and an airport-owned business park that employs about 250 people.

"This is a growing housing market, and the county did not appear willing to get into the sewer business," Self said Thursday. "It really opened the door to private investment."

A local developer, Sally Lambert, asked Integra officials last year to consider building a sewer plant to help get the Meridianville area off septic tanks.

Lambert said she has two projects in the works that will benefit from sewage service: A high-end, 350-lot subdivision off McCollum Road called Brier Creek; and a commercial development at U.S. 231/431 and Patterson Lane.

"The national retailers hardly won't come with septic tanks," Lambert said Thursday. "One of their first questions is always about sewage availability. This will allow us to better utilize the land."

So HSVTiger, what're your thoughts on Bridge Street? You've been rather quiet on an eventful weekend here in town.

Some comments from the developer of Bridge Street, Gary Safady..

Besides the main Bridge Street development between Governors Drive West and Research Park Boulevard in Cummings Research Park, "we've got a strip at Governors West and Old Madison Pike we'll open probably in the summer. We have more demand than we have spaces."

Some retailers are opening this first weekend, while others will open later this year and into next year. Why open the retail part of the development in phases?

"It's a huge project (with 550,000 square feet in the so-called retail lifestyle center). Many projects of this size open in phases.

"That's not our choice. ɠThat's tenant-driven. Many tenants jumped in at the end. We've got the best tenants in the industry. Once you get key ones, others will follow."

I think that will be exciting to see who these may be.

A lifestyle type center being planned for Madison. Sounds optimistic but
probably won't happen as envisioned.

Project will offer residents five-star hotel amenities

MADISON - If you've never shopped in the French Quarter in New Orleans, David Baker wants to give you a chance to do something like that in Madison.

Baker is setting up a project that would offer Madison residents a central place to shop and dine and the opportunity to live like the rich and famous.

"The Streets of Madison" started out as a concept by local developers John and Donna Blue. Baker has taken the idea of a New Orleans French Quarter look and added his own twist to create the proposed "economic ecosystem" with the emerging "5-Star Living" trend.

The proposed development would be located on 57 acres between Hughes Road and Wall Triana Highway with the project's businesses near the Madison Public Library on Plaza Drive.

Baker's plans involve a commercial/residential development that would offer residents amenities similar to those of a five-star hotel.

Residents who live in The Streets of Madison would pay an annual fee for a concierge service they can use for things such as travel arrangements, dinner reservations, in-home top-rated chefs, child day care drop-off and pickup, yard maintenance, pet services, maid service, delivery and local drop-off service, dry cleaning, grocery shopping service and in-home massage therapy.

"One call and everything you need will be taken care of," Baker said.
The "5-Star Living" trend is what will set the development apart from others, Baker said.

He said the development will become an economic ecosystem because the amenities would be provided by businesses within The Streets of Madison. But anyone would be able to shop and enjoy the stores, restaurants and services of the commercial development.

Madison Planning Director Bob Atallo said some changes will have to be made to the city's zoning regulation for such a mixed-used development.

"It's a great project and I'd like to see it happen," Atallo said.

Mayor Sandy Kirkindall said it would be a boost to the city's revenue potential, and that's always welcome. The city hasn't agreed to any incentives for the project, he said.

Baker is projecting an estimated $2.5 million in annual sales tax revenue for the city from the development.

whoopee

Huntsville Times
It's been more than two years since the main lanes of Memorial Parkway from south of Weatherly Road to north of Whitesburg Drive were closed and motorists shuffled to the new access roads.

The Alabama Department of Transportation took a major step to remedying that situation Friday when it opened bids to build an overpass on the Parkway that will stretch from north of Whitesburg to south of Weatherly.

Reed Contracting Services Inc. of Huntsville submitted the apparent low bid of four that the DOT received. Reed's bid of more than $16.2 million was about $1.3 million less than the next lowest bid submitted by Racon Inc. of Tuscaloosa.

Work on the overpass probably won't start until early next year or perhaps as late as the spring.

The DOT will review Reed's bid to determine if it meets specifications. If it does, the state will prepare a contract for both parties to sign. Once that's done, the state will issue an order to proceed and Reed will begin work.

Many times that process takes three to four months.

The company that wins the contract will have 340 working days to finish the project once it receives an order to proceed.

Johnny Harris, the DOT Division 1 engineer, said 340 working days could be about two years on the calendar. That would put completion of the overpass at early or mid-2010.

Harris said that once weekends, holidays and bad weather days are excluded, there are between 150 and 180 working days in a calendar year. A working day is counted if the contractor works more than six hours that day.

The 1.8-mile-long project involves building a long, elevated overpass from south of Weatherly to north of Whitesburg, drainage improvements and installing lights.
The total cost of the service roads and overpass will be nearly $28 million. APAC-Alabama Inc. was awarded an $11.65 million contract in fall 2003 to build the service roads, which opened in April 2006.

The pending construction on the Parkway overpass on the south end of town leads to the question of when the Parkway overpass for Max Luther and Sparkman drives will be built.

Harris said construction on that project is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2009, which will start Oct. 1, 2008. Harris said he hopes the project will begin early in fiscal 2009.

"We'll have to look at the available funding and look at all the projects in the state competing for funding," Harris said.

The overpass will be a long, elevated span through the Max Luther and Sparkman intersections.

The main lanes of the Parkway were closed and traffic shifted to the service roads in that area more than two years ago.

Hi, longtime lurker, firsttime poster.

Has anyone heard anything more about Mellow Mushroom in this area? A friend of mine has heard that they are going to open in Jones Valley, but I'm not buying that. I've tried contacting the corporate office, but have heard nothing back.

Sounds like a wishful dream for Madison... and a poor business idea. The developer does not even sound like he has a lot of experience with large projects and large risks. I just do not have a lot of faith in the demands of Madisonians that are already fulfilled by a 15 minute drive to Bridge Street or West University.

Saw some houses going up in Midtowne on the Park. I woke up this morning and had a flat... no doubt from all the debris at the development.

They are site prepping big-time along on the east part of Providence Main. Looks like they are ready for the other side of the commercial high-rises.

Baymont Inn going up besides Cracker Barrel at I-565/ Wall Triana. This is about the 4th or 5th hotel planned or announced in this area by the airport.
