Bomb threat shuts down Harbour Air temporarily
Harbour Air shut down operations for three hours this morning as 60 aircraft were searched by police after a threat against the airline was phoned in to the company's call centre.
The shut down affected approximately 300 passengers who were ready to board planes in Richmond, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Victoria and Langley.
The threat also resulted in a lockdown at Langley Senior Secondary School located on 56th Ave. across the street from Langley Airport.
The school was locked down from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m.
The threat was received at 7 a.m. but an official with the airline, Chad Wetsch, said he was unable to confirm it was a bomb threat.
"Once the threat was phoned in we followed our emergency procedures and ceased operations," said Wetsch.
The airline began to resume operations at about 10:15 a.m after police had searched planes and installations.
Liberal Senator Colin Kenny said during a recent visit to Victoria that B.C.'s coastal transportation systems are vunerable to terrorist attacks. Float-plane passengers should receive the same security screening required of passengers travelling through ariports, Kenny said.
"These aircraft take off fully loaded very close to buildings and there's just zero reaction time," Kenny told the Victoria Times Colonist.
Wright said he doesn't envision any such changes.
Kenny headed a Senate committee on national security and defence that in March released a critical report on security. The report suggested float planes be subject to the same passenger and baggage checks as those in larger airports. "Instead of checking in 10 minutes ahead of time, you'd have to check in 15 minutes ahead," Kenny said.
