Walked on 9th street last night towards the ArtWalk and saw the Mode restaurant on 9th & Olive with its lighted sign and patio. Didn't get a close look, but it looked great from the street corner. Kind of an odd location with the Galaxy "1000 Beautiful Girls" next door, but hopefully Mode will start a ripple effect of new retail on Olive Street.

Oh yeah...I didn't see if it was open, but I don't think it is. I'll try to get a better look tonight.

ALERT!!!
PURPLE LINE MEETINGS!!!

From metro.net:

Public Invited to Participate in Metro Westside Extension Transit Corridor Study Meetings in October

Public Comment Requested

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) will be conducting several meetings in October to obtain public comment on the agency’s Westside Transit Corridor Study, which will analyze various transit alternatives and environmental impacts for the possible extension of the Metro Red Line or Metro Purple Line to West Los Angeles.

Agency consultants will evaluate potential environmental impacts for several transit modes, including Bus Rapid Transit on dedicated lanes, at-grade or aerial Light Rail Transit, subway or aerial heavy rail.

All meetings are from 6-8 p.m. and will be held at the following locations:

* Tuesday, October 9, Emerson Middle School, 1650 Selby Avenue, Los Angeles (map)
* Thursday, October 11, Pan Pacific Recreation Center, 7600 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles (map)
* Tuesday, October 16, Wilshire United Methodist Church, 4350 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles (map)
* Wednesday, October 17, Beverly Hills Public Library Auditorium, 444 N. Rexford Drive, Beverly Hills (map)
* Thursday, October 18, Santa Monica Public Library, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, Santa Monica (map)

Click here to view a map showing all five meetings.

Here is a map of the Westside Study Area:

Metro’s Alternatives Analysis Study is the first step in the environmental clearance process. The Metro Board of Directors will determine whether to move the project forward to subsequent environmental review stages based in part on the results of this study.

Now's the time to show your support!!!

Sorry for the digression here, but I have to address your comments on SBE

SBE is okay, but let’s face it, if it weren't for pioneers like Cedd Moses and co, we would not have Edison, Seven Grand, The bordello, redwoood bar and grill, blue velvet, golden gopher, library bar, and orther places downtown I like to go. We would have more J restaurant and Lounge, Trifecta, and Rooftop bars at the Standard if SBE invested heavily downtown. SBE wants to make tons of money by creating the next Vegas. It doesn't want to make unpretensious neighbordhood joints with character. A little SBE is not bad, and even great in places like LA live, however, I am still more excited when true visionaries come into downtown and make it the unique urban environment we all want DTLA to become. In my opinion, too much SBE will not make downtown unique and urban, but instead the next "in" area of LA. Again, there is nothing wrong with Citizen Smith (especailly with their indie film movie nights) coming in, bottle rock, and even a few geisha house wannabe scenster clubs opening in the ground floor of LA central, Hanover, etc. I am not saying that.

I love how true chefs are coming into downtown on their own. This is the type of thing you see in DC, Boston, NYC, Chicago, and SF. All of the top chefs in the country fight to open their own place in the heart of those great cities. That is what I want to see here.

I really want downtown to be the true symbol of los angeles and I dont think SBE will work to that end. Again, I dont dislike SBE, its just not my scene.

Any progress on the Linda Lea

Does anyone know what the progress is of the Linda Lea? It should be done any day now, but I doubt it!

Very slow progress. It won't make its October deadline, but it shouldn't be after the end of the year, I think.

Purple line all the way baby!

And can anyone PLEASE answer my question on whether Zev Yaroslavsky's views on development had any effect on the Development Zoning Changes that were supposed to be implemented last week?

I need to know!

Although I hear good things about Katsuya, any restaurant/nightclub over designed by Phillipe Starck is worrisome, and I read an interview with Sam Nazarian last year that wasn't promising. It seems he has a lot of control over the chef's menu and tends to stick with more common items that are in the typical comfort zone. In other words, it's more scene-y than foodie and seems to be one of those generically fashionable places that lack substance and are only in it until their concept is out of style (about 4 years). I don't want to be judgmental with places that I've never been, but Nazarian even has nightclubs called Privilege and Prey. But then, it's LA Live and at least it's not something by Dolce Group.

SBE = Dolce at this point. They have caught up. They both represent super sceney places. The food is definitely second to the "scene", sorry, I mean atmosphere.

Also KAtsuya was good, but now he plans to open like 10 I heard. That will be the end to good sushi. R-23 is still locking it down though.

some info. I got from an AEG construction supervisor, Staples Center will add an LED wrap, just like the one you guys see at the entrance for Nokia...it'll be located where you see the LA Kings long banner...should look pretty sweet!

Aren't they going to continue with the same pattern along Chick Hearn Court?

Don't think so...the street was recently repaved.

One more thing to note that was mentioned, they'll be installing automatic pedestrian/automobile barriers (I believe, posts rising from the ground)...

That interior is still a bit disappointing. It has a generic office feel to it. I like to be wowed when I enter a lobby of a performance theater like when you step into Radio City's opulent design. I am a fan of that lighting however. So have we confirmed those 6 towers won't be LED but rather screen projections?
