thanks dan. would it be possible for you, or anyone else from emporis, to create a building ID for the waldorf-astoria proposal?

Once a building permit has been issued, (actually i think once zoning is approved) alderman have no power to stop construction. That is why we have a zoning process, even if it was approved under a different alderman, the decision still stands. This is why if fioretti tries to stop x/o he will get creamed in a lawsuit. His background is in law, so i think he knows he lost this battle. Maybe he is just trying to get chummy with the Prairie people by acting as though he can actually do something to stop them. I think pre-sales is more of an obstacle for x/o now...

I really like River North Marriot Suites, I'm not exactly sure why. I don't know if its because its got a sort of retro look or something, but its my idea of a good modern design for some reason...

river north marriot

I totally agree with that statement!!! You cant help but take in the sandstone color with the mossy green and glass. Everytime i drive by this building i just want to stare at it!!! Its a shame that so many others that are precast concrete cant just stand out a little more like this one! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ the west facade is pretty much a train wreck, but the other 3 are fairly good. i wouldn't say it's amazing or anything, but for being a somewhat generic mid-range hotel project, i suppose it could have been a lot worse. i'd give it a C+.

Great shots Breezyfingers.

The one of 550 St. Clair is interesting. So maybe we won't end up with a 6 story high wall of blank white aluminum siding??
I'm going to allow myself a sliver of cautious optimism...

I also love that shot of OMP/South loop from the south west. It really highlights the new density of the area.

I agree, but that's one of the reason's I like it. I think that not embellishing sides of the building that you know will be covered up and positioning the Elevator cores as far from guaranteed views as you can is good architecture. Think about it, it is bordered by lowrise buildings and a Parking lot, something will be built there eventually and that wall and the windows will be blocked. That said, the west side is actually pretty good compared to most buildings.

Good architecture is the best balance between practicality and beauty, finances and aesthetics.

I don't see anyone criticizing Waterview for building a blank wall against blank walls, but that's only because the wall is already blank. If either of the buildings bordering WV are torn down, does that make it bad architecture? I don't think so, at least river north Marriot suites has some windows and such. Or I don't see Mather Tower being criticized because the backside and sides are completely blank. You can see the backside from that alley on Michigan, but the sides were eventually blocked by other buildings...

I dunno, those lowrises to the west aren't landmarked are they? I think planning ahead is always a good thing.

^ yeah, i'm aware that most of the west facade will be eventually blocked (fingers crossed) by whatever is built on the big-ass surface lot at kinzie/clark, i guess i just hate the west facade so much because i have to stare at it everyday on my walk home from work as i walk east down kinzie. if/when the west facade is blocked, i'll probably like the overall building a bit more.

Has "Alliance" taken a look at the Parkview West glass yet? Wow.

Shame about that little park next to AMA... Chicago needs more of those. And that row of late 19th century rowhouses opposite the 353 Clark site needs to be landmarked pronto.

Thanks - One thing I love about this building is it's location, 1/2 a block away with an unobstructed view. I was able to create a slideshow of it's progress, broken into 3 sections now.

I thought fairbanks came out ok. I would have liked them to use a little more "coarse" mesh on the parking structure, but what can you do

No, they are not... which is a shame. But Friedman, out of the goodness of his soul and not due to any specific pressure, planned the River North Center development around them (he owns everything but the Adult Book Store). I have no idea if they will follow through with this plan, or if his good intentions will survive him if he leaves the firm, but for now I would consider those buildings safe. (And that's what I call good planning, by the way. )

Of course, Friedman Properties has an incredible track record of preservation, so that is partly why the city is not afraid to leave many of his holdings in River North unprotected.

That said, the west wall of Marriott is probably going to stay exposed for a long while, hopefully indefinitely. The center parcel, south of the historic buildings and east of the big lot on Clark, was originally planned to be an open farmer's market area. I have no idea if that concept will survive either. Clearly, a lot of the original plan has been altered to a great degree.

Did I ever! Thanks very much. And I agree with all of your commentary (whales, Tides painting, park loss, etc).

Concerning the faux copper, it is anodized to look something like new copper (of course, it won't patina). They switched to this material when the prices of copper skyrocketed.

Good to hear. I really like this proposal and hate that horrible brick wall you have to walk by for half a block.
