Given that I'm now out of town, can anyone tell me how bad the traffic has been downtown since 6th was closed? Is it the end of the world the way a certain fast blinking alderman claimed it would be, or has it been okay?

Looking at these pictures I have to say there's little doubt in my mind that they'll be back to ground level by next June or July - they are working extremely fast, which is a good thing.

^I've walked by 6th Ave and 1st St SE at lunch and the traffic is a little backed up and the drivers appear confused. I can't say what it's like in the mornings. I haven't heard anything about it in the media though, I assume that they have moved on to cover the next "crisis".

Every time I drive downtown I take 4th or 2nd ave because it's a lot faster. However last Sunday morning I decided to take 6th ave because I wanted to drive by the Bow site to see the progress because I wasn't in a hurry. BIG MISTAKE. It took me about 30 minutes to turn onto first street and then another 20 minutes to get to 10th ave. There was construction on first street also though and they had 2 right lanes closed off so I think that's what made 6th ave extra slow. Maybe it was just bad timing but I'm not going to go that way again.

Bow Building bailing out

calgary.ctv.ca

rre

POSTED AT 6:15 PM Friday, September 28

Workers on EnCana’s new Bow Building downtown are bailing out.

The pit, which will eventually house the parkade, was full of groundwater on Friday.

The development company says it expected this to happen.

The water will be allowed to accumulate before it is pumped out and filtered.

The city will then decide what to do with the water.

A system will be built to keep any more groundwater from affecting the building once it is complete.

Cal: There's two buildings in this project, the tower and the cultural podium to the south. See the first page of this thread for more info...

As Boris said 2 buildings. The pit on the left is the main tower and the one on the right is the cultural building (3 weeks ago there was an 8 story former hotel sitting there). The entire stretch from the left most street to the right most (2 blocks total) will be excavated for the parkade, which will be around 100' deep. The road down the middle is scheduled to be back open by summer of 2008, while the parkade is built beneath it.

Since the shot from up above that was posted above was taken they've excavated another 50+ feet along the west side, and are working steadly on the shoring around the south end of the site.

The Bow (taken Oct 24/2007)

The pit on the north end is over 1/2 way to its maximum depth now, and they've started some initial excavation along the south end of the pit. The section under where 6th avenue runs is now being excavated, they've dropped it about 8 feet on both sides and the access ramp is slowly creeping southward.
