In response to the condo collapse, this was and will continue to be an issue until the market catches up with all of these new developments. Living in the South loop it has been an incredible ride, but with all rides it eventually comes to an end.

I know that they are calling it a collapse..but the article I saw in Crains goes by sold this year verses sold last year and we all knew a few years ago that this day would come...an over supply bubble. I wish they would have reported numbers sold this year verses last year.

^ Thanks for the photos. It's about time 353 made it to the mat pour! I take it they finished lopping the top off the caissons. When I walked by the site last week, they had an excavator whacking what looked to be the lopped-off caisson tops with a mini-wrecking ball. It had to be the most inefficient demo process I've ever seen (the typical jackhammer-type attachment - forgive my ignorance of construction equipment - would have seemed to have been a more logical choice!). Anyway, good to see solid progress. Now if we could just get Friedman to team up with someone like Habitat to launch the final building in River North Center (498' ft residential) as a rental tower asap, I'll be happy for a few minutes!!

You just beat me to it! It was a half-decent piece with Martin Wolf of SBC and Kerry Dickson of Related giving soundbits (nothing that would be news to most of us, of course), but Related is sure getting a huge amount of press for 340 (which by the way I started out loving, and I think it's already improving with age Seriously, this is a tower that I predict will stand the test of time - it's a real beauty. I find it interesting, satisfying and unique from every angle. I'm hard-pressed to come up with a superior building during this entire boom thus far - it really is that good...

Those were the old footings ( foundations ) from the previous building, The caisson tops were filled with that "poor" concrete, mostly sand, this was dug up with the excavator and then scarped off by hand. The good concrete stops exactly where planned.

This is a footing shaved off to form part of the retaining wall.





Here ( week earlier ) Darth Welder cuts the top off the caisson sleve.

I got a few heights today. Next time I will cover the Near South Side, but there was some urgent stuff to get in the mid-region. Many of these are revisions:

The Legacy at Millennium Park: 819'
353 North Clark: 624'
Allure at K Station: 363'
theWit Hotel: 311'
Avenue East: 291'

At the end of the afternoon I visited BVictor and he gave me his latest finds:

Aqua: 822'
300 North LaSalle: 785'

So the Legacy loses 3 feet and Aqua loses 1, but 300 N LaSalle gains 1, 353 N Clark gains 21, and Avenue East gains 15. Hope nobody's too disappointed. All heights are rounded here to the nearest foot. In case anyone needs to know, here are the exact heights (same order):

818'-9" / 624'-5.5" / 363'-1" / 311'-0" / 290'-6"
822'-2" / 784'-6"

Aqua, Allure, and Avenue East are all measured from elevated roadways, so the heights would be greater if you went down to grade. However, none of these seems to have a main entrance at grade level.

A few floor counts have to be changed as well:

353 North Clark: 44
Allure at K Station: 36
theWit Hotel: 26

Fogelson's 73- and 83-story towers are part of the 80-acre Central Station development, whose plans call for 8,000 units. So far, about 5,300 units have gone into development or been completed since 1990

Fogelson this month filed a request asking the city to allow each Grant Park tower to be an extra 100 feet high, not to add square footage or more units but to make the buildings taller and thinner, he explained. Together, the towers will have about 2.2 million square feet.
