Anyway, this particular project at the old Cottonwood Mall site is exceptional. I hope it will be realized as presented in the renderings.

Yeah, the Holladay village thing, from what I understand it will be a community village, the majority of the retail will be locally owned business, etc. Here are some renderings I found for it:

I wish they would hide the parking better on this one.

I would like to see a lot more of this as infill in areas of downtown also. Perhaps a few more stories, but the same concept, especially within the inner blocks. There's no reason why we can't have our traffic flow downtown and at the same time have these Euro-style squares within the blocks themselves.

Infact, one of the reasons I like Downtown Salt Lake's layout so much is the infinite possibilities it gives a developer to do this kind of thing.

I wonder what Ralph Becker's opinion is on this, 'future look of Holladay?' He is an urban planner and I think most likely will be the next mayor.

I too think there is a lot of potential with the large blocks in SLC. While not ideally set up for and urban feel I think they can be worked around to create such a place.

I think the steps that CCC will be taking to recreate the mid block streets is a good first step. Including Richards St. Regent St. and Social Hall avenue. I think the city has a great opportunity as it gets rebuilt in some areas and built out/up in other areas. I think recreating former mid-block streets or creating new mid block streets could add a great feel to the downtown. These streets would provide opportunities to move more freely from block to block rather than the need to span the entire block. If there isn't potential for a mid block street there could be potential for a green/open space to connect the grid streets. I think the best example to this is Gallivan Center. While the south side of the block has a street cutting through Gallivan allows from access between 200 and 300 S without having to go to State or Main.

As has been mentioned in the Master Plan there is a push for a 350 S open space connection corridor to run all the way from downtown to at least 700 E possibly 900 E.

In a recent bulletin the ' Heritage Foundation requested Urgent action be taken to save the Public Safety Building. Since this is not what we would typically think of as our "historical legacy of architecture," I would be interested to see what other forumers feel in regard to saving this structure

*URGENT ISSUE*

The front page of the Salt Lake Tribune announces a new Pacific Northwest Pipeline headquarters to be eight stories and contain the most modern materials including energy efficient glass.

Preservation Issues
This is the second finest International Style building in Utah; second-only to its big brother on 400 South, the historic First Security Bank Building (now the Ken Garff Building). As preservationists and as a city, we’ve learned from our success and failure. Let’s take the great success along with what we have learned in preserving First Security Bank and translate that into saving and rehabilitating another great structure....

This building like it says is just about as pretty as the Ken Garff Building. What the hell is meant by international style, apparently it means that you could find similar ugly buildings built in the late 50's anywhere in the world.

So apparently the preservation society chooses to attempt to save ugly buildings that don't really ad character to the city, and when they are owned by the city. But to attempt to save a great looking building built in the early part of last century, a building that ads character to the city the won't fight it when it's the Federal Government.

I am of course talking about the old hotel currently occupied by Port O Call. Ok class by a raise of hands who would rather see the Port O Call building saved than the Public Safety Building?

Who's in charge over at the preservation society anyway?

Well I do what I can, I try to be informative, educational and humorous!

I finally figured out the name of the Port O' Call Building, it is the Shubrick Building.

I suggest everyone write an email to the landmarks commision http://www.ci.slc.ut.us/ced/hlc/ and the Utah Heritage Foundation http://www.utahheritagefoundation.org/ and encourage them to increase their efforts to save the Shubrick Building

The Utah Heritage Foundation has a section of their website for the Shubrick Building and Odd Fellows Hall:

As for the public works building, I'm not convinced that it isn't worth saving just because some people think that its ugly and old. Similar logic was used 50 years ago to demolish buildings from the turn of the century. Since the city really only has 2 international style buildings to begin with, I think that the UHF is right on target with their efforts to save it.

I guess this is one of those 'agree to disagree' topics.

I was very excited to see the First Security Bank Building (now the Ken Garff Building) being restored. I think that preserving the Public Safety Building would be in the best interest of the city because it does add character to the city. The more diverse styles of architecture we have the better (especially if they are good examples of that style). But I know there are people who don't really care for the International Style of architecture, my brother absolutely hates the Ken Garff Building.

That being said, I also agree that the city needs to preserve other historic buildings, such as the Port O' Call building. I understand the desire to have the new courthouse adjacent to the existing building. And with the new security standards I see the concerns with the close proximity to the Port O' Call building.

So, to please all of the affected parties, they should move the Port O' Call building across the street to occupy the Northwest corner of Earl Holdings parking lot.

How many cities Salt Lake's size in America have ONE international style high-rise, let alone two? I bet you won't find many.

This building is historical, whether you find it attractive or not. I think it's classic and hope the city can save it. The great thing about downtown is that there is such a variety of classic buildings and not just a gap between really historic and modern.

Back to Holladay. It looks great, but I won't get excited until I see it built exactly the way it's rendered. I wouldn't be surprised if it's scaled down greatly, especially with the downturn in the economy.

Good luck getting the building moved to the Earl Holdings block, they guy won't budge to anyones ideas unless there are his own, and now that the block has been landscaped along with the parking lot there is no way the city would be able to use eminent domain. I'm sure there is a block somewhere in the city that they could move the building. Maybe the Sheraton would allow a corner of their parking lot on 200 W and 400 S. While not ideal it would be some nice infill in that area of the city, I'm sure we could all think of several dozen locations to move the Shubrick.

While I am not a fan of the Ken Garff Building or the PSB I'm not advocating tearing it down either. I really do think the variety ads to the city and gives it a natural progression through time. However if I had to choose I would choose to keep the Shubrick. I agree with the comment of current opinion and demolishing things because we don't currently like them. There used to be the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright commercial structure West of the Mississippi on the site were the Shilo and they took it down for a parking lot way back when, then built the awful Shilo (maybe some people like the shilo, I'm not sure).

Sorry guys. On the preservation of the public works building, I am going to have to disagree. International design or not, it needs to go. Of course, I do not like the Garff Building on 400 S either. I am for the preservation of some of the old buildings and it is good to see the Deseret Building preserved, but I see no reason to keep the Baby Blue Eyesore. Only my opinion.

No reason to keep it?

It's only the second international style high rise in the state. That's pretty significant.

It's probably one of only a few international style buildings in the western United States, especially the Interermountain West.

It's an important building that bridged the gap between classic and modern design in Salt Lake City.

Remember, a lot of people back in the 1970s thought buildings built in the 1930s were extremely ugly and eyesores for the city. What happened to them? They were demolished for far uglier buildings that are either eyesores now, or long gone for new parking lots.

What's worse, a nice, historical high-rise on that site, or a sprawling building/parking lot?

This building is important and we don't have to pick between this and saving the Shubrick Building. It's not like the city is saying "save one or the other, but not both". We can try and save both, I just fear this one has a better shot, since we'll be going up against far bigger forces when saving the Shubrick Building.

Easy there Comrade, we are all entitled to our opinions and it is apparent that you have a very strong affinity towards International style building. While I don't understand it I respect that you have that opinion. Some of us think they are hideous but don't care if they stay and some want them to go. It's all just a matter of taste.

I never said they couldn't save both, I was just saying that if I had to put my opinion or vote behind one vs the other.

Here's an idea, lets move the PSB right behind the current courthouse and make it the new courthouse, that way we all WIN! YAY for US! :-D

There is a big difference between thinking something is hideous and advocating its demolition.

I myself don't really care for the Continental Bank Building (Hotel Monaco), it's fairly bland and I would have much rather saved the Newhouse Hotel over it. Yet I would not say "tear it down", because I understand the importance of the building.

I just hate this "eh, it's ugly, tear it down" attitude that seems to plague Salt Lake and Utah in general. Back in the 1960s and 70s, during urban renewal, this was used to demolish many of Salt Lake's most historical buildings. We gained nothing from that and looking back on some of those mistakes, we realize how big of a travesty losing those buildings truly were.

This is an important building that has a ton of history. It's historically significant and because of that, I don't think we should be so quick to want to get rid of it. That mentality always seems to come back and bite us in the butt.

I don't understand some of you, and sometimes your comments leave me dumbfounded. Why do most people on this thread want to tear down this building, when we have plenty of gaps in our urban environment that need to be filled. We don't need any more gaps. Let's build this city, not tear it down!

I'm not really sure where you are getting that "everyone" on this thread says tear it down. T-mac wants it gone and that's his right to have that opinion. I'm all for it staying even though I don't personally care for the look of it, but I wouldn't ultimately miss it if it did get torn down either.

If that's your mentality, I would not want you to be the mayor of my city.
It seems you'd cave to anyone wanting to tear it down regardless of what would be put in its place.
