parlarle is suuuper chic and i like walking by it. reminds me of something out of SF. and have you guys been to the new Luigi's pizza by the slice over at the MAARS? it's really modern looking, fine detail, and great crowds of people. mostly gays. (yay!) i love that place and it's open till 11pm weekdays, and 2:30am weekends.

Hey didn't Luigi's pizza just open up this weekend? And this weekend having the Rainbow Festival at 20th and K you would expect most of the clientele to be gay this weekend. The neighborhood is actually pretty mixed -though very gay friendly of course.

Peet's Coffee & Tea is going to be on J Street kitty-corner from Pete's Original Pizza. Also in MARRS will be DV8 Boutique and Azul Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Lounge. At the Midtown Mixer they asked us for suggestions for businesses in the rest of the building. What would you guys like to see at MARRS?

my priorities would be either a gun shop, gas station, or topless barber shop. If not, then we could certainly use a sushi place.

maars would be fantastic if it had many open late eateries/lounge spots, for the after hours crowd. midtown/downtown REALLLLLYYYY needs a gas station... and for gods sake there has to be a mcdonalds in downtown!!!!

maars couldhost a real nice clothing store besides dv8. knowing me, i'd suggest urban outfitters ha.

Urban Outfitters is already going in at Arden Fair so I doubt that would happen, but I'd like to save a midtown UO for K Street possibly in the future..

Why does there have to be a McDonald's in midtown? Keep the chains out in the suburbs, the central city has plenty of burgers that leave McD's in the dust. There used to be one on K and 9th Street, but it went out of business, as did the one on 30th and K. Good riddance to bad food, I say!

Gas stations...we've got plenty of gas stations on the perimeter of town on 29th, 30th, Alhambra, X, and Broadway, plus one will be built at the 12th/16th and Richards corner. Not much need to put them in the middle of midtown, gobbling up space and encouraging traffic.

Another gun store in midtown? Maybe an indoor range at MARRS for those who don't want to drive to Elk Grove or Rancho Cordova to do some plinking. We already have Old Sacramento Armory and Broadway Bait Rod & Gun, and the Bass Pro shop in the railyards will probably have a gun room as well.

But seriously, the whole idea with MARRS is to have a bunch of late-night spots: apparently being open late is a condition of the lease. Although I was a bit disappointed last night--I went by Luigi's to get a slice around 8:00 PM and the place was closed, I assume for the holiday. I'll have to hit it next time.

When did the McDonald's at 30th and K close? I haven't been in that area in a few weeks but I thought I saw it there maybe a month ago?

I can't help noticing how much faster leasing is happening at MARRS than at 800J. Are the lease rates at MARRS lower? Or "location location location"?

Certainly a generation gap between you and dtserg89. Really, not everyone can afford $9 hamburgers at Bistro 33 midtown or Cafe Bernado or even $6 hamburgers at Hamburger Mary or places like that. McDonalds and it's dollar menus do provide a service to those that choose to pursue their products. That's why they continue to be profitable. Heck, I remember eating at the 29cent hamburger stands in the late '80 'cos that was all this starving college student could afford. Personally, I'd rather see an In-n-out than McD's but a healthy mix of chain restaurants is needed in a place like midtown too. E.g, would you like to boot all Jamba Juices out of midtown/downtown too. They are after all a chain restaurant too.

BTW, the McD's at 30 & K is not closed. I think you may be referring to Burger King closing and converting to McD at that location. Both BK and McD did close at the K street mall.

You didn't really take Brandon's comments about wanting a gas station, gun shop and topless barber shop seriously, did you? I didn't because I thought a better use will be for Club Fantasy to move out of Richards Blvd and sign a lease at the MARRS building. Then convert their old building into condos and have people live in a Fantasy.

otnemarcas: You are correct, I was thinking of the Burger King that became a McDonald's. Shows how much McD's shows up on my radar. As to the Jamba Juices, yeah, I'd rather see them gone, along with all the Starbucks.

I figured Brandon was joking, but it would be nice to have an indoor range nearby. Cordova's a huge drive, James Mangan is never open, and I don't like driving to Elk Grove for anything.

How about a gas station that sells guns and the people behind the counter are topless? What a pretty sight.

Hey I was just thinking how the Central City has a derth of good burger joints. Not that the golden arches sells a good burger but as was pointed out not everyone has the same cash flow. I'm OK with one of those new Mc Donald's 'upscale' stores in the downtown area -heck even on K Street.

Oh there's also gas station on 20th and I or H too.

Luigi's was open later than 8:00 PM last night cuz I picked up a pie after work last night. I think you're right about the holiday thing. Plus those guys were so busy over the weekend I think they needed the break.

I stopped at Luigi's yesterday too. While Serg liked the modernity of the space, I appreciated the classic touches--the heavy-beam ceiling of the building, and the old family photos on the wall. The pie was pretty good, although the guy who served it was unsatisfied with the size of the slice he gave me, and actually refunded me 50 cents off the price! I'll be back either way, if the piece I got was undersized the preferred size is definitely a good filler and they're tasty too.

If someone wants cheap fast-food grub, they can hit Del Taco on K and Alhambra, or, as mentioned, there is a McDonald's a block away. Jimboy's on 29th and N counts too, and it's a better taco--and hopefully Suzie Burger will be close to that price point. I do agree that low price-point chow is a nice thing to have, but I suppose I'd rather see it on the perimeter than the heart of downtown.

Only if they sell burgers too!

can one of you who drinks martinis and puts "diversity" and "urban" in most of your posts point me in the direction to some sort of cultural event. I need some extra credit in humanities and apparently a barbaric middle class event like football doesen't count (according to my teacher)

You missed the rainbow festival, which was last weekend, I believe. A celebration of "diversity" in an "urban" setting. I passed on that myself, the admission was too steep, but it went to a good cause, supposedly.

Try the calendar on Midtowngrid.com for some ideas.

I'd go for a multi-use space, with live events, workshops/classes, etc. I know it's not strictly "retail" like the rest of the place, but more of a hub type space to bring people together, which should (in theory) help the neighboring retail places within the building.

MARRS does seem like a natural spot for some sort of live-music/events venue...ideally an all-ages one!

I have been to Luigi's three times in the past week. I swear they put something addictive in the pizza.

Not sure how many of you were out on Second Saturday, but this month's was absolutely NUTS...part of it perhaps due to the "Handle festival" thing around 18th and Capitol, but everywhere I went (pretty much from 19th and V to 17th and I to 26th and J and back) there were people and bands and stuff happening, several places on each block. Midtown was downright crowded and lots of stores were open late even if they weren't doing an art showing, because people were coming in and spending their cash. All I can say is that this should be happening more than once a month...and ideally businesses will catch on to the fact that this town wants to get its Sac on every weekend.

I was thinking about going... sounds like I definately should of went...

Any reason why they only do this once a month? Why not once every two weeks? Then gradually move to once a week?
