THE TICKER

$60 million luxury facility going on site
By Tribune staff

August 16, 2007

A slender luxury hotel is going up on the site of the former Dana Hotel, a dilapidated Queen Anne-style inn that had been the city's oldest continually operating hotel building.

^^ This article mentions that we will have yet another sushi bar in town (cool with me, but why not bring back the Thai Star Cafe that used to be in that building). I have worked in this area for 15 years, and the development has been astounding. I used to park in the lots where Nordtrom's, the Hilton Garden Inn and Grand Plaza are, eat hot dogs in the building renovated by Rock Bottom Brewery and drive east on Grand Avenue, since it was a two way street back then.

I know this might be off topic, but I was on my balcony and the F-16 Thunder-Birds are practicing putting on a show!

"The Dana Hotel and Spa"

Not so long ago that would have been some delightful ironic humor, like "White Sox legend Ron Karkovice"

Does anyone have some good photos of the old Dana? I remember the building and some of its nice (albeit quite dilapidated) details but can't find a pic.

Ah, Emmitt's Pub. I've never been there, but I have seen Ocean's Eleven.

Here you go Viva... These are larger versions of the shots you saw on the Preservation Chicago web site. They were released to the public around the press conference however many years ago; I've hung on to them since then.

Hey guys..... you know that older highrise building at the northeast corner of Wells and Randolph....???

It's currently being restored (at least I think it is) and immediately to its east there used to be a 5 storey building that has been flattened....

Does anyone know if the redevelopment and the tear-down are related? No matter what the answer is... does anyone know what is going up in the now vacant lot?

Thanks!

^ Summarizing the Plan Commission meetings is a GREAT feature you've added to New City Skyline, and I applaud it. Thanks for that.

It's nice to know that some Aldermen are pushing developers to kick in some money to upgrade CTA stations

Yeah. It's great to see aldermen forcing developments to put up cash for something the city should have been funding all along. But it's ok. The developers will just pass the cost along the buyer or not build at all and the Aldermen can keep up the charade that sales tax revenue actually goes to public works.

...amen.

Interesting how the same people who complain about the dearth of affordable urban housing are often the same ones who favor the most restrictions and stipulations (and therefore, impediments) on any sort of real estate development, especially larger projects that could actually boost the supply of available housing....

^^^ Despite the waviness of the glass in that picture, I am incredibly surprised by how cool the design of this corner is. Its like retro-sixties style corner or something...

I dunno, the glass on this building could definitely be less wavy, but I think the super dark coloration looks really cool, its a different color for glass that you don't see on a lot of buildings. I hope they have an appropriate treatment picked out for the cement areas of the building that won't clash with the glass...
