I was curious and found this at Wikipedia:

"Sugar House was officially established in 1853 , six years after Brigham Young led the Mormon settlers into the valley.

Despite its name, not a single cube of sugar has ever been produced in the area. The name came as a suggestion from Margaret McMeans Smoot, the wife of the mayor of Salt Lake City, Abraham O. Smoot, and was inspired by the sugar mill being built in the area at the time. The mill was never finished, due to problems with materials never arriving from Arras, France, and the project was scrapped, leaving the area with its name. The mill did, however, produce unrefined molasses."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_House,_Salt_Lake_City,_Utah

Funny though, My friends and I always considered 9th and 9th to be part of Sugarhouse. Maybe it just seems more fitting.

Be some of the first to see the newly redone Walker Bank Building.

Plan to attend the “Business After Hours” at the Walker Center on Thursday, September 27th for one of the market’s first previews of this renovated downtown landmark that will have just been crowned with the re-installation of the historic Walker Weather Tower

That's great news -- hopefully that will be a boost for both Delta and SLC.

And hopefully I'll get to go to Paris someday.

Not to get anyone's hopes up, but according to Fox 13 news H.P. will be breaking ground on the 222 South Main tower within weeks. ( For me weeks could be anywhere from 2-4 weeks. )

Let's hope they can keep their date this time.

I've already started building 222 South Main in my backyard. And I guarantee, it'll be finished before HP gets around to it.

I just received my copy of the Enterprise newspaper and the front page is a large write-up on the Marmalade project. The article stated that the price range of the 1-3 bedroom condos is $300,000 to $1,000,000 and that all of the units in the 1st phase are already reserved. The demand for downtown condos is obviously still high.

A couple of nice write-ups on Westgate and Marmalade from The Equity Green Publication,

Westgate Lofts Bring Warehouse Living + Geothermal Heating and Cooling To Salt Lake

Westgate Lofts are perfect for the downtown city dweller. The building is within walking distance of downtown and is only a couple blocks away from The Gateway and EnergySolutions Arena where the Utah Jazz play.

A converted warehouse that was built in 1909, it once housed commercial tenants General Electric and Sears Roebuck. There will be 54 residential and 3 commercial units. Each tenant will enjoy there own private balcony and there will be a rooftop garden for all to share. Sizes range from 650 sq/ft studios and one-bedrooms to 2,500 sq/ft penthouses. Prices start at about $150,000 and range close to $700,000.

But the cool thing that sets this development apart is the way the structure's temperature will be regulated. A geothermal heat pump was installed, which compared to using natural gas and electricity, will save tenants between 25% to 75% on their utility bills. Basically, water beneath the earth's surface remains at a constant temperature. In the winter, that water is brought to the surface. A heat pump extracts the warmth from the liquid to heat the units...the remaining water is sent back underground. In the summer, the process is reversed. Although simple in its design, the ground-source heat pump system should be extremely efficient, with low operating costs, as compared to installing new air conditioning system.

Marmalade Brings Urban Contemporary Living To Downtown Salt Lake City

Set just a few blocks north of Salt Lake's downtown district (500 North and 300 West), Marmalade is bringing sustainable, contemporary living to one of Utah's most historic districts. With tremendous views of downtown and the capitol building, Marmalade will be a mixed-use property that blends environmentally-responsible living with urban design. Designed by Prescott Muir Architects and developed by Howa Capital, Marmalade will be a breath of fresh air for the Salt Lake area and will fit in nicely with the new downtown redevelopment project that is taking place over the next 5 years.

You will definitely find as much space as you are willing to pay for with units ranging from one-bedroom condos to full on three-bedroom penthouses. The design cultivates natural sunlight with floor-to-ceiling windows and space is not in limited supply with open floor plans and balcony spaces starting at close to 1,000 sq/ft for the one-bedroom units (2,000 sq/ft for the penthouses). The one-bedrooms start at $284,000-$325,000 and the three-bedroom penthouses are going as high as $750,000 right now (Price List on Page 3). Keep in mind that this project is still in the beginning phases. I drove by a couple weeks ago and they havn't even broken ground yet. Once construction is complete, any available units will probably increase in price.

The units will have gourmet kitchens, highlighted by natural stone counter tops and Energy Star Appliances, and spacious bathrooms, featuring large bath-tubs and glass-enclosed showers. If you live at Marmalade, you will be able to walk downstairs and shop at organic grocery stores or get something to eat at the side street cafes. The plan for Marmalade reminds me of being in North Beach (SF) for some reason...maybe because of the vibe that they are going for.

Marmalade also has a few green features to mention. Energy efficient heating and air conditioning systems, with programmable thermostats, will be in each unit. Coupled with low-E glass windows and low-VOC paints and building materials that provide improved air quality, Marmalade will be a cool place to live and breath. The homes around Marmalade right now are a bit run down. Over the past 15 years, the homes have been somewhat neglected but that should change once construction begins. It is seriously a sweet place to live and the views are fantastic!

contacted someone who is high up in the World Trade Center Association of SLC this week. I got this response....

Thanks for your interest and follow-up. I am hoping in the next couple
of months that the site selection process will be complete. You are
right that it is an exciting time, and there are lots of variables at
play.

The WTC has a new newsletter, and with this email I am asking Layne
Palmer to make sure you are added to that list to make sure you keep
posted on the latest.

Also contacted someone in regards to the Current Salt Lake Safety building/facilities building. That I posted earlier in this thread.....

Thank you for your email.
The current public safety complex has not been scheduled to be
demolished. The public safety complex that will be built will be on a
separate piece of land. The land on which the current public safety
building resides does not have adequate space.
The future of the current public safety complex is in the hands of the
city council. The council will decide what will be done with the
building and the property once the police and fire departments have
moved out.
As of right now there are no renderings of the new public safety
buildings. That will all take place after the bond passes.
Again, thank you for the email. I hope your questions have been
answered. If any questions come along in the future feel free to
email.

As you can see many of the people that I e-mail about downtown development are very nice and ask for me to keep in touch with e-mails. In fact in one of the downtown alliance e-mails that i received a few months back they said they were wondering when I was going to write them again, because it had been awhile since they had heard from me.

so if the new safety building will be built else where, and on 5 acres (half a block) where will it be built????

my guess would be on 5th or 6th south west of main. there are several brown/grey fields there that cover at least half a city block. I can't think of many other places in the downtown area large enough. I don't think our "favorite parking lot" on 4th S. and Main would be an option as it's all owned by private entities that seem to like full block surface parking lots.
Also, in Downtown Rising they sited 5 and 6 S. as road they wanted to be "stately and green" so municipal facilites could fill that role.

I hope we hear more about the wtc soon. This could be our best chance for a signature tower in the not to distant future.

Valley rental rates balloon

"Without a significant number of new apartment units under construction, we will see vacancies continue to decline and rents will continue to go up," said Jed Millburn, principal of Apartment Realty Advisors-EquiMark, which is based in Salt Lake City.

Thanks rmarkosian, that made for some excellent viewing and reading. I like the concept of mixed-use on the Granite block. Like everyone else though I'm afraid they will do something too "anywhere USA looking." Let's hope good taste and foresight will prevail.

Someone said on the City Creek thread that 222 S Main was to start groundbreaking on the 28th of August. That would be fantastic. My fingers are crossed.
