Yeah, I see it regularly too, I just live down on Elliott Row. It'll look much nicer when they bury the lines

I agree, I live on Orange st. and I walk along Princess all the time. It'll be great to see the lines underground, so that people can really appreciate some of the great architecture on the street.

Orange is one of my favorite streets especially between carmthen and wentworth there are some absolute jewels on the street. Hey we all don't ive that far apart.

Saint John- Saint John is a major contender when it comes to shopping destinations in the maritimes, this came as a surpise to a lot of people.

That word from mayor Norm Macfarlane, who says a retail magazine has rated the port city number two in the region, just behind Halifax.
Imelda Gillman of the board of trade tells our newsroom a lot of people are not aware of that.

"We've got to start promoting that. we have to make it easy to get people into our shopping districts."

The new exit ramp from Highway 1 to the shopping district in east Saint John is expected to be completed in time for the christmas shopping season. Funding of nearly 700 thousand dollars was announced yesterday.

SAINT JOHN - Did Roly MacIntyre let the news of provincial funding for Saint John's new justice complex slip out early?

The Saint John East MLA and minister of Supply and Services may have let the cat out of the bag when he was introducing speakers, including Premier Shawn Graham, at a press conference Monday announcing the construction of the new exit ramp off Highway 1 at Ashburn Lake Road.

After Transportation Minister Denis Landry spoke, MacIntyre came to the podium, turned to the premier and said, "What a terrific announcement. Premier, you were mentioning all the various projects and there's another big one for Saint John and it's called the courthouse, $45 million."

"Not today," called someone from the crowd.

"We're not announcing it?" said MacIntyre, looking surprised and laughing. "This is almost an announcement."

The crowd, including both Graham and Saint John Mayor Norm McFarlane, also laughed at MacIntyre's possible gaff.

"But I'm going to tell you, we are going to build it, we haven't announced it yet," MacIntyre said while attempting to regain his composure.

"You know, Norm, I may not be here tomorrow," MacIntyre said, looking at the mayor.

Following the press conference, the premier refused to confirm MacIntyre's statement.

"Today I was here to announce this important announcement for the Ashburn Lake exit ramp," he said.

"But clearly our government is committed to the new justice complex for the city of Saint John. Roly MacIntyre, as minister of Supply and Services, has been working diligently on this file and we'll be in a position in the future to make an announcement."

Site work is expected to begin this year on the new police headquarters and provincial justice complex.

It is scheduled to be built on the site on Hazen Avenue previously occupied by the Saint John YMCA-YWCA.

Sounds good to me! Let's get construction started!

Appeared on page C3
Cost: $700,000

Start date: Tenders for the work will be issued this month.

Completion date: By the end of the construction season, in time for Christmas shopping.

TO much to info in the paper today but with the new exit whats going to happen to the deluxe there. I am assuming there going to widen the road so it would be 2 lanes eachway. I just dont seem them making it 1 lane each way.

Does anyone Know how they are going to configure the ramp??

They've got the Y boarded up and the parking blocked off with DOT barriers. Hopefully they start soon.

Oddly enough, they have left most of the lights on.

They probably left the lights on so that energy usage is higher while the feasibility study is being done for the second reactor at Point Lepreau.

I agree with the conspiracy

This is the project I am most looking forward to seeing going up as well the cruiseship welcome center. I think it will help uptown by bounds and strides.

LoL, where is the Chapters in SJ? well, likely at the same location than Costco, Mexx, Gap, Buffalo Jean, Eddie Bauer ect... there are in Moncton

Actually I can name two places in SJ that I know with 100% certainty that Costco is looking to build a store, and many of those other stores you listed are right behind them. But let's not act like those big names are the be-all end-all of shopping, SJ has many great retail choices, and not just multi-national chains, but also wonderful local shops and boutiques.

People in Northern New Brunswick are only interested in purchasing mobile homes, cheap beer, pink flamingos and portable pools... You had a nice run but we'll take over from here. Have a pleasant day..

I`m agree with you. Anyway, the moncton retail sales dollars per capita is more important than SJ

Hey man pass the pipe.......I have yet to see a mobile home, pink flamingo or portable pool in the South End

. But at least the drug dealers have jobs... One thing the South End does have is potential, can't say the same for Northern New Brunswick...

I don`t really care about Northern NB, I`m not from there.

Why do you need to bash northern of the province to increase SJ level ?
