well, then i hate to be the one to tell you that pelli has planned on 4 ft floors.

eh, 89 floors is sure to be another supertall, and while the talk of another 2,000+ft building with that developer fellow was nice, i am happy with another 1,000 footer with some new siblings. i would love another spire-sized building, don't get me wrong, but these are pretty heady days for the city, so i won't complain about an 89 footer.

Maybe Daley can convince them to do one big multi-use building, with retail, offices, hotel, condo and rental apartment units.

Let's see... 89 + 56 + 40 = 185 floors.

Could surpass Burj Dubai with that.

only the spoiled brats of chicago could whine and moan about an 89 story building being proposed for their city. for god sakes, this is an awesome announcement! we're finally hearing solid information about a plan to rid our famed river front of that eye sore surface parking lot, oh happy joyous day.

The last tall building completed by Cesar Pelli & Associates is the

88 story Two International Finance Centre in Hong Kong.

Also the Landmark building U/C in the UAE will be 72 stories with 1,063 ft.

Agreed, this is great news!! Hines has a reputation of getting things done, and this scheme seems to break their fear of doing truly bold things in Chicago and taking advantage of mixed use.

What bugs me a bit about the scheme is that, at first glance and from the nice map you posted earlier, three towers would probably consume a lot of this site, leaving little open space.

I would prefer one major, tall tower, with a ton of public features at the base and a good deal of setback from the river. On the other hand, phasing the development seems to be the way to get things done these days, rather than mega-projects like Block 37, where one phase is dependent on the one before it. Also, if Pelli manages to create a great urban ensemble like Marina City, where the three buildings play off one another and are greater than the sum of their parts, I could certainly see the value in a scheme like this.

The Pelli commission overall has me a bit disappointed, though. I was hoping for a new talent and someone who wasn't represented here yet. And, don't forget Pelli's last idea for Chicago: The Tweezer calamity. That was the only supertall structure I've ever seen that managed to scream out, "I'd rather be playing golf than designing this damn thing."

Not sure about the one in UAE, but the Hong Kong tower is definitely office. The Wolf Point 89 story tower is residential/hotel, and will undoubtedly have much shorter floor-to-floor heights, and as such won't be anywhere near as tall. However, I'm definitely with Steely on this one. I think this is a very exciting proposal conceptually and seems like it really could be master plan worthy of this prominent site. I think the heights of the buildings are fine (hopefully the 89 story building at least cracks 1,000') and I just love the total mix of uses. I really like the selection of Pelli here - I'm a fan of his more modern work and I trust he'll do something pretty special at Wolf Point. I only hope we are not waiting too long to begin to see some renderings!

How about the tremendous interest that Hines has shown high profile chicago sites? Between 300 N, the riverside proposal and this, they are really cementing themselves in chicago architecture history (that is, if riverside and wolf point get done)

As for "just" 89 stories. Like some members of this forum say (ahem, alliance) Height is nothing without design. I'll take 89 stories of drop dead design than 100+ stories of, well, poop.

I bet strong equity developers like the kennedy's and hines are somewhat recession proof because they aren't as subject to interest rates as highly leveraged developers. I think the slight downturn is housing is kind of doing what i expected. Highly leveraged yahoo's who are trying to turn a quick buck on any old site and kind of going away and the strong, experienced equity players with premiere sites are still moving forward.

Does anyone think that developers often act as city boosters? I am not really sure what i mean by that but it seems that people like kelleher and the chicago hines people convey a strong sense of civic pride with their proposals and the manner in which the relate to the city. (Like kelleher sponsoring the chicago soccer tournament)

Outstanding news, the plan to have 3 towers is more then I had really ever though about, but they'll offset the overbearing nature of their neighbors.

edit: 89 floors is also more than I ever expected, it's easy to stick out in this location so 89 is more than enough for skyline impact.

Wow... amazing news today.... and that's a huge # of residential (condo and apartment) and hotel units... that might even be enough of a tipping scale to make the area moderately busy at night... it would be cool to see a rendering of these three towers. I hope they include a cool riverwalk.

STEELY... Please be prepared to move theWit Hotel to "Under Construction"... the caisson crane has been fully assembled with bit and all..... it is now ready to bear down if it hasn't already been drilling the last few days. If anyone else has already seen this puppy drilling please speak up.

Wow, this is amazingly good news about Wolf Point. I'm curbing my enthusiasm until we see renders (someone needs to bribe STR into throwing together some quick massing models) but from the article, this should look good.

The current proposal would include an 89-story tower on the southern tip of Wolf Point with 400 condominium units, 650 apartments and about 350 hotel rooms, according to the person familiar with the plan. A roughly 40-story office building with 1 million square feet of office space would rise on the east end of the site, and a 56-story, 450-unit condo high-rise would stand on the west end, the person says.

So it would rise up from the Mart on the east with the 40 story, peak in the middle with the 89 story, then fall off (maybe) with the 56 story to the west along the north branch.

So what we'll likely have is a 1000' in the middle flanked by 500' on the right and 600' on the left.
The massing of it sounds good to me.

yeah, me too, but i would say i'm only mildly disappointed. foster would have been wicked, but i guess pelli is a safe choice. and i have to believe that the incredibly unique site with its extremely high visibility will really get the creative juices stirring in pelli.

89 stories is plenty tall for this project to have a big impact, now let's all hope and pray that the architecture lives up to the hype of the site.

btw, does anyone know how old cesar is now, he's got to be getting up there, right?

Jeez, gang. Good news, but how many of these projects can really materialize? 680 N. Rush, Franklin Point, Wolf Point, Mandarin, and Park Michigan, on top of Trump, Museum Park, 340, 600, and Aqua that are already going up. . .

I'm a divorcee whose ex got the house. I'll be looking to buy in a couple of years, and between the overbuilding that's going on and the major downturn in the residential market, I'll be able to buy a penthouse in the Spire by 2010.

And I'll throw a kegger for you all at the party room on 150!

I went by there on Sunday and there was no evidence of caissons yet. But it looked good and ready to start anytime. I hope someone can check it out tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone have news on the status of Sono, Lincoln Park 2520, H3177, or 541 West Cornelia? It's been a while since I've seen any news on these, except for the word that construction on Sono was imminent two weeks ago.

Steely, you can go ahead and change 1555 South Wabash to construction, and 550 St. Clair & 600 North Fairbanks are topped out. Everything else on the front page is up to date as far as I know.
