yeah, the park area is way to crowded to enjoy it. I think my friends and I are going to have a few drinks to get into the celebratory mood (that and we are ASU grads...) and walk up to the McClintok bridge and watch them from there. Or head to Rula Bula on Mill and do the park, haven't decided yet. Anyway, have a great 4th everyone!

Tempe Town Lake Expanding?

Found this on AZCentral under: "Tempe leaders share their goals for city during summit".

• Carter: Investigate enlarging Town Lake west to the Priest Drive bridge.

I think this would be an excellent move, and since they will have to replace that dam soon anyway it would be a good time to expand it. I'll be posting a few fireworks photos later on as well.

To Priest? that is a huge expansion, is it not? too bad they couldn't have extended it East to tempe marketplace, they could've put in a cool marina and pier type deal, and put some towers there instead.

The problem with extending to Priest is that the buildings will only get short as it gets closer to the airport!

^Eh, who cares if they are shorter nearer the airport? It will mean more development along the lake/north Tempe and thats a good thing. I love Tempe Town Lake, I wish (I'm sure we all do) that it stretched from Mesa through to west Phoenix. Maybe if they keep expanding it in small increments it will some day, its fun to dream.

Thats exactly what I want, I think it would be a great thing is the river was nearly 'flowing' again. Phoenix needs all the interactive water it can get. But its a pipe dream/fantasy anyway, so nothing to get too concerned about

Nice shots from the north side of the lake. My favorite place normally, but I didn't get there last night.

Why will they need to replace the dam soon? And to build a new one only half a mile downstream seems really shortsighted. They built the walkways along the banks all the way to Priest so why didn't they just put the dam there originally?

As for extending it upstream to Tempe Marketplace, it's basically there now. Ever since shortly after they filled the lake, they've allowed the water to back up past the upstream dam and it extends quite a ways past McClintock. It would be great if they'd extend the walkways along the banks as well, but for all intents and purposes, the water is already there.

^ The water pooling on the east is mostly runoff from Mesa's new treatment plant. Since the ground became supersaturated it's slowly building up, too much of the incoming river water fucks with the pH of the lake, making swimming impossible. As a result Tempe is spending millions putting in a drain on the east side to take the pooled water and spit it back out on the other side.

Couldn't they simply inflate the top of the upstream dam to prevent that river water from getting into the lake?

Its some generic mid rise office building, I was looking at it last night (Saturday) when I was at a concert at the Marquee, which by the by is a crapply run venue. They add in an insane amount of fee's to their ticket prices- don't tell me the tickets are $14 but when I get there I have to pay $21 because of your lame fees, just tell me the tickets are $21!- and they make you take off your shoes before you go inside, they frisk you and take away things like hairspray! Its not an airport you schmucks, its a freakin' ska concert I just want to dance w/ a pretty girl and be left the hell alone!

/end rant.

If you are talking about the NWC of Apache & Rural, that will be the new home of the Barrett Honors College. Here is the scoop from ASU's website:

BARRETT COLLEGE

Square Footage: 490,000
Project Start Date: September 2007
Project End Date: July 2009

Project Scope: This project will provide student housing and academic space for the Barrett Honors College and will be located generally in the south portion of the Tempe campus (directly north of Apache Boulevard), along the eastern boundary of the campus. Barrett College will comprise approximately 1,700 beds to house freshman through upper class honor students in residence halls with a central dining facility. Major components of the total 490,000 gsf are 431,000 gsf of residential space and over 22,000 gsf of academic space for the Honors College, including 11 classrooms, the Dean’s Office and 26 faculty offices.

ASU tore down a mid-century gem on that intersection, the former Valley National Bank building (with its famous gold dome). They took apart the dome and stored it, hoping that the architecture students figure out a way to incorporate it into a future project (likely not going to happen, the pieces of the gold dome will sit and collect dust forever).

Anyways, on the other side of Rural next to the Taco Bell, the 8-story Campus Edge Lofts are going up.

theyve always been good with their fees when compared to ticketmaster.

and i do not mind the frisking and checking at the marquee after the shooting they had yesterday night at the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is one of my favorite big(ger) venues but now i am really questioning the security there.

Thats like saying "Well compared to cancer having lupus isn't so bad." The fee's are stupid. And I'd rather run the risk of being shot than have my privacy be invaded, but thats me and I'm weird.
